Alright no XP

Partners are a shell of what they once were

I mean there’s still the story but I don’t have high hopes for it

The story will most likely be exactly what was in the first trailer, a bunch of overused paper "jokes" for the third entry in a row, and toads galore, except this time the villain isn't bowser, but some guy who will act similarly to bowser, using bowser's troops except brainwashed like super paper mario. Remember when this series at least had original enemies to fight?

At least the third game included an dimension's worth of cannon fodder and TTYD took place on a separate continent with it's own type of fauna.

Devs are lazy, these days.

So, partners are not only temporary, but they automatically attack in combat without input.

One of the commentators also said that he started to skip battles later on in the game, just like SS/CS...

I swear to god, I didn't even mean to be the bearer of bad news, these are just the previews confirming our worst fears.
Well shit.

I will play the devil advocate but XP farming was a chore in the 2 first paper mario. Maybe it not all gloom and doom if they have removed it
It's Paper Mario, grinding was never necessary to begin with. Just fighting the enemies as you go along was always enough. If there's no exp, why bother with any RPG elements at all?

Gonna be honest, I'm not shocked to see it come to this. Especially when the partners they're showing off in the trailer are generic looking mario enemies (Granted a step up from Toads).

If it's a repeat of Color Splash this will be the downlow:
- Game has functional RPG combat, however everything you do will be way more time consuming then pressing the A button akin to TTYD.
- There's a charm to the combat, BUT it will outstay it's welcome in general causing battles to be skipped often.
- Boss battles will most likely be very hard without one key item(thing) found in the overworld map before the boss.
- Padding on the overworld by doing random things to fix up the map (Like the paint hammer stuff in Color Splash)
- Game will look great, using the paper aesthetic to it's benefit, but will have similar ideas done before or more generic themes (standard desert, jungle, etc)
- Music will be fantastic, and will be the first good thing people mention when talking about the game (Sticker Star has this in the bag)
- Story will be by the numbers, but the character writing will be good despite the severe lack of party members to make up for Mario's communication skills.
- At the end of the day a generic 5/10, not the Paper Mario people wanted, better then Color Splash and Sticker Star though.
- Will hopefully be the final wake-up call to IS to actually make a real RPG style Paper Mario.

It's like the Sonic cycle at this point.

Aside from the XP. There's also the items and coins you get off of them. That's usually some incentive.

PM is one series where I'd say EXP might be a crutch, you could probably replace it with Metroid-style hidden upgrades to BP/HP/etc and the experience wouldn't really be that different especially if you had a couple of said upgrades buyable for larger and larger amounts of coins so there was some actual incentive to pick and choose battles.

That said.. Ugh. We really don't need sticker star again. Shame IntSys never gets a chance to show off their visual effects and audio wizardry on games that are actually worth a damn anymore.

I haven't touched the series since the disappointment that was Sticker Star, but this pretty much sums up my thoughts on the decline of this series.
Looks like he doesn't know partners are temporary PC-controlled shits though but he's spot on everything else and he brings up a good point about the lack of rewards without exp, especially since coins are so easy to come by yet you have little to do with them except hoard. I think the reason Sticker Star bothered me so much was because I saw the first footage for it at E3 2010 and it looked exactly like a classic Paper Mario game with classic bosses, partners, etc, only for the final product to have none of the stuff from the first trailer in it.
Kinda surprised no one saved the whole footage from the original E3 demonstration.

Also some shit from /v/ summing up the series.

They need to do a Sonic mania and let someone else make a Paper Mario game.
Or at least remaster the first two games, poor TTYD is stuck on the Gamecube, Wii, and emulation. If Nintendo and Intelligent Systems are so dead set on not listening to fan feedback and poor sales, then they can stand to future proof those games and make a quick buck.

TTYD doesn't benefit from a remaster. I'd say the first Paper Mario is more deserving of it.

@GeneralFriendliness that vid was more entertaining than the entirety of Sticker Star.

That's how bored I was with it.

Dude, remasters is what killed AlphaDream.

Closest we have is Bug Fables, I haven't played it myself, but from trailers it looks like the game people have been demanding.

I do remember some person was doing a TTYD style fan game using similar art assets, I can't remember it for the life of me, but I know they were trying to adapt different mario enemies into new partners design wise.

Bug Fables is being offered as a physical edition I think this month on Limited Run Games. I was planning on getting it there.

Definitely give it a try. Played it myself and that game was a joy to play.
