Well, there is officially no XP system in this game.

How exactly does a developer neglect to implement a vital system like that three times in a row?

Honestly, I’m still a sucker for Sticker Star, Color Splash and Paper Jam.
But yeah, I’m actually excited for the new Origami King release.

I hope it can live up to the hype, and maybe be slightly better than Color Splash. Plus, I can expect it to sell well. If Luigi’s Mansion 3 (another great game, by the way) can make you pine for nostalgia, why can’t Origami King?

Remember when you saw that giant door in TTYD? The one from the title.

You were hyped to see what was behind that door the whole game. You beat pirates, wrestlers and went to the moon but that door was always at the back of your mind. Remember when the series was about the story and not the gimmick?

What I remember is how entertaining Lord Fucking Crump is.

What do you mean three times in a row?
Super had XP. Yes, I know it was flavoured as classic style super mario points but it levelled you up which upgraded your damage and you could do stylish attacks by shaking the remote for more XP.

Blame Miyamoto for that.

It helps that you have to physically go back to the door in order to get the next chapter started; the game would not let you forget about the door.

It's also why the first Paper Mario kept returning to Peach and Twink, and always opened with a shot of the two castles up in the sky; so you would always keep your ultimate goal in mind. It's good storytelling.

Much as I detest that game, I wasn't referring to Super, just Sticker Star, Color Splash, and now The Origami King.

Better hope the coins and confetti are super important, otherwise this game will have pointless combat like SS and CS.

Doesn't matter if the coins and confetti are important, you can get both from just fucking around with the environment anyway. It looks like it's the exact same deal as SS and CS, combat is a waste of resources, so there's no real reason to engage in fights.

I will play the devil advocate but XP farming was a chore in the 2 first paper mario. Maybe it not all gloom and doom if they have removed it
When it comes to RPGs, EXP was more of an excuse for players to actually fight the enemies. Yeah, usually they reward you with stat boost, but they could easily do it Metroidvania style where there are collectible items that give you stat boost instead.

For me, the lack of an XP system is hardly a deal breaker.

So, partners are not only temporary, but they automatically attack in combat without input.

One of the commentators also said that he started to skip battles later on in the game, just like SS/CS...

I swear to god, I didn't even mean to be the bearer of bad news, these are just the previews confirming our worst fears.

As far as I can tell, you're running around with thousands of coins in your wallet. That ain't a good sign for this series. At least Dragon Quest had an excuse because of expensive swords and shit. But the lack of exp and new regular enemies is kinda showing how fighting really is. In fact, the game is essentially more of an scavenger hunt than an RPG.

I assumed what people were getting at is that with the exp system gone it also removes the stat building element from the first 2 paper marios. In TTYD especially, since there was no hard cap on Badge points, it let you mess around with different playstyles like danger mario.
There's also the matter that battles become pointless wastes of resources without a tangible reward like XP.

To give Nintendo and Intelligent Systems some credit, at least they were smart enough to include basic attacks this time.

God, here I am being thankful to have something so basic return, Paper Mario has really gone downhill.
