It unfortunately doesn't matter what anyone thinks, this game is going to sell gangbusters regardless on the sheer principle that this is the first genuinely brand new big game from Nintendo since March.

God, just please let this series die. It has become a complete zombie of what it used to be.

Any game that actively discourages players from engaging in a core mechanic (battle) is objectively shit. How do they not get this?

Either they're genuinely out of touch with what fans want, or they don't give a single shit about feedback and criticism.

After the thrashing the SS and CS received and the abysmal sales of the latter, both conclusions are equally disturbing.

Ryota Kawade only barely stopped working on the Cipher TCG only recently, apparently due to the continued success of Fire Emblem Heroes, IntSys's still-ongoing mobile project. He has very little involvement in Origami King.

If there's any reasonable PM project to expect him on, a potential next entry probably be the earliest one at the soonest that he could personally helm, but considering how many older Nintendo vets from the SNES era to GameCube era either got promoted and effectively kicked upstairs, retired, or just take only supervising positions now, I'd say the series itself is probably dead in the water, but if Metroid is any indication, they'll squeeze the hell out of the art assets to promote elsewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing Paper Mario merch pop up at the new Nintendo World parks for a couple years without any indication of IntSys developing another title.

I don't think anyone should expect Origami King to sell poorly, but over the coming weeks I expect to hear the same people that liked Color Splash sing similar praises here.

Nintendo usually ignores what western fans want. Which is why many of their ideas seem pants on head retarded for a lot of things. Like how the friend code system works instead of just allowing a normal online connection just like everyone else offers. Or how the 3DS needed to exchange info with other users by just idling as you walk and hardly anyone else was in close proximity in America because they designed that shit to work in a population dense country like japan.

So yeah they're very out of touch, Japan calls the shots for America still. NOA doesn't have autonomy, they got rid of that towards the end of the n64. The last vestige that the west had on nintendo's influence was Nintendo Power.

The debacle with amiibos and NES/SNES minis was another decision that Japan made because they really thought that Japanese marketing practices work in the west. They didn't get that having extremely limited supply frustrates westerners and they want actual convenience over coveted social status in an item.

Japan thinks selling 300 items at 1,000 dollars is better because you have no over stock and the high price means everyone wants it because only people with high status can afford it

Where as america would sell 30,000 items that a lower more reasonable price to it's competitors and a bit of overstock left over means people can still buy it months down the road.

So what flavor is that boot, guys? Leather? Polyester?

Don't get mad, these posts are from people who are probably younger than TTYD. Unlikely they've ever played either of the real Paper Mario games. Likely the kind of person who gets nostalgic for Mario Kart DS.
Mario Kart DS was the last Mario Kart game to feature Block Fort, the one and only true battle arena.

Also no they're not younger, these strike me as people who are older and don't want the name of Nintendo blemished. Just like Redditor Star Wars fans.

Is the script in Color Splash pretty good? If so here is hoping it's just as fun in OK.

Everything about the game is average and lifeless. it's like what they did with NSMB and it feels like a game programmed by a machine algorithm and not an actual creative team behind it.

If you want a game with a cast with a ton of personality pick any falcom RPG.

I played until about halfway through Color Splash and imo the writing was one of the best parts of the game - which really speaks more to the low quality of the gameplay and world more than anything else. Dialogue was often chuckleworthy and there are a few standout events which deserve some mention (like the steak battle) but long gone are the days of a PM game driven by fun combat mechanics, a compelling story and strong characters.

Some build of The Origami King has already leaked. Seems to be somewhat playable on yuzu.

Alright, as far as the Treehouse stream goes, you'll get at least 100 coins for beating the crap out of an bunch of goombas and shy guys from every battle, which explains how fat your wallet usually is. Now, you can burn off some of that extra gold by buying more time to rotate the stage or inciting the peanut gallery to riot and throw shit at the enemy and to heal yourself (note that this doesn't work on the Legion of Stationary bosses). They haven't shown any stores, otherwise I would've used my mad autism skillz to tear this game an new one on how broken it would've been. And since I'm still talking about money, throwing confetti not only fills in a void in the world, it also causes some pocket change to appear and it's also the key to finding a few Toads (yes, it's back and it's more annoying than Paper Jam's take on this). Plus, there's also an auction going on, but the streamers chickened out when it was starting to get good; but with an initial bid of 10,000 shekels, you know this game lives and dies by your wallet.

Alright, that's enough sperging about money. I promise. The writing, so far, is bloated with puns and in-jokes that an die-hard Mario fan would enjoy; but there's hardly anybody worthwhile to repeatedly talk to, so you're good on that part, especially with how shallow the NPCs are. There's also an fetch quest going on in the background, but we only see two out of the five keys for an front door of an religious museum...or an tourist trap. And combat mostly revolves around lining thugs up so you can stomp them all in a row...And it stays that way until you get to an giant boss, at which point, is just endless cycle of approaching it and being swatted away. And before I forget, the only thing that you get from fighting is the easily obtainable confetti and a ton of gold.

Some miscellaneous stuff includes an museum and some kind of arena in a city, going by the dialogue. There's also an fast-travel pipe within the area shown, but the streamers never showed it. And as the previous trailers shown, there's quite a few chase segments and some platforming elements. But at the end of the day, you'll probably get gated by money, rescuing toads, and confetti; which is hardly anything new, at this point.

I went into the treehouse presentation hoping to be wrong. Friends were telling me "You've got to stop being so pessimistic about all of these games you haven't played yet. Don't let the vocal minority sway you".

Lo and behold, I watch the presentation and the gameplay looks fucking boring. I wouldn't even call this an RPG, it's a shitty puzzle game where the puzzle is the same every time. Another Paper Mario game to remind me that everything I've ever enjoyed is slowly being destroyed and this video game hobby brings less and less joy.

Go buy XCOM 2, you'll feel better.
