Sport IS a genre, you can go to any console online store and see that a MLB and a FIFA game have their genre both listed as "Sports" and not "Baseball" and "Soccer" respectively.
That's a marketing bracket, not a genre. Its assumed that the same kinds of retards that buy madden also buy fifa. Doesn't mean they're the same genre.

Now that it’s been 5ish years since PMTOK, is it considered a cultural thing? It’s announcement and release was near the beginning of the whole Coronavirus pandemic and with everyone locked in with their switches it accumulated a new audience that seemingly outnumbered the older generation who the former was probably content with anything to play then which is why it blew up It was also being shilled for in the news section on the side of the switch start up a year later.

Now today the TTYD remake is released along with BrotherShip, there’s barely any commotion over PMTOK since actual rpgs are being released instead of bizzaro minigame stuff. I haven’t seen a Switch 2 port for PMTOK advertised or announced, and the only thing I see of it from analyzing normie social media outlets currently is how sad or angry the audience was with the contrived death scenes forced onto characters designed to be as likable as possible.

the few small communities that obsess over PMTOK are small-name artists on Xitter or the rare gijinka redesigns who are either general Nintendo soyboys, gaggles of trannies, or just really obsessed autists.

I guess the devs will likely continue the trend of throwing in a random minigame as a crutch to assist yet another arts and crafts gimmick with a shit plot that’ll inevitably piss off the remaining OG fans who haven’t already left due to all the new games being dookie and the influx of troons from the bombed TTYD remake. But that’s gonna take 3-4 more years to happen so I’ll just leave it like this.

Even before the TTYD remake was announced, TOK felt like flavor of the month with no shelf life.
Other than the fanwars surrounding it, I mostly only remember this game's existance because of Youtube super sperg DogsEatingDogs6/Aster of Aether, the guy is hyper focused on the game and its antagonist Olly and was covered in a bunch of funny streams and videos when he was discovered.

For the futire of the series, I think the next entry will differ more from the Sticker Splash Origami era but will probably still not be a true followup to TTYD. The devs just seem too stubborn, the remake was 100% made just to shut old fans up.

Please God just let this series die, I’ll never ask for another remake of anything. It really shows how much the modern devs hate TTYD by how much they changed to make it “theirs”.

I keep wondering why they're so stubborn in the first place. It's like they want to make a "cinematic" but also goofy game series, and they know it won't sell well, so BAM, it's a Paper Mario game now.

I used to be sad about this, but as @Two Dollars said, if they made a "traditional" PM game, it probably would be a flavorless game of the month and ignore everything that made the first 2 entries so great, all because they want to make it "theirs" rather than something special.

"Oh you just want TTYD 2, bo-" yes, because TTYD and 64 (and SPM imo) were creative, had a fun combat system and overall, were memorable games. Something that people till this day are trying to replicate with their Bug Fables and Outbound Ghosts (but never actually hitting the mark, which makes me feel even more frustrated).

The most important part is that even if they make TTYD 2 when it comes to mechanics, it will never be quite TTYD 2 in soul, writing and worldbuilding. It was lightning in a bottle to be fair.

I know I'm dragging PM's corpse to talk about Bug Fables again, but I think it was worth mentioning this either way.

Bug Fables Plus is a mod that adds pretty much new content in all areas: New enemies, new items, new medals, new bosses, new dungeons, it's basically unofficial DLC or the game, which got released like a week ago.

You can download here on Gamebanana

I might try it later on, but this also reminded me that I never really tried Paper Mario romhacks as well, and I'm surprised no one really talks about them on this thread since they're kind of a big deal (at least compared to most retro games I've played). Has anyone here tried Master Quest or Dark Star edition before? Are they generally any good or not worth the hustle? I know some people here were talking about TTYD 64 as well, but only so briefly.

Why does Sticker Star rate higher on our poll than Color Splash? Sure, Color Splash was still mediocre compared to the first 3 but Sticker Star is pure dogshit.
Probably a combination of fewer people having played Color Splash because they were already burned by Sticker Star, and the perception that Sticker Star could be brushed off as a failed experiment while Color Splash was a more conscious decision to double down on the thing that everyone hated.

I'll need to give this a look.

The only mods I have experience with are Black Pit and Tower of Trials, both of which are stellar roguelite-style mods. The more story-heavy hacks always looked pretty janky aside from TTYD64.

Color Splash is when they decided modern Paper Mario would fully commit to style over substance. Clap for the realistic craft textures and (admittedly great, IMO) music, plebs.

Origami King was a step back in the right direction (and IMO is the best of that era of Paper Mario's), but even it couldn't escape from "what if the enemy was sentient stationary".

People keep saying this but I really dislike the music despite liking jazz. I think my disgust for the games seeps into the music.

Going from shit to “kinda sorta mediocre if you ignore what the series used to be” isn’t exactly glowing praise.
Mark Haynes/Alvin Earthworm/the Super Mario Bros. Z guy made a video about the modern state of Paper Mario a while ago but I can’t find it anymore. Maybe he delisted it?

I tried Master Quest. I almost bea the whole game, but I kept having difficulty agains the final fight against Bowser.
The whole game felt more a puzzle game th an RPG, though that may be the charm of the hack.

There wa so long since I quit; I ended up forgetting quite a bit. I do know of the following:
  • If you can still gain EXP in Master Quest, your LV i still too low.
  • Tubba Blubba nd Monstar are now actual threats. There i still no Koopa Bros rematch, though.
  • Koopa Troopa Jr get Sta Rod power in his final match that can be disabled the same way.
  • O new enemy is those rouge Star Kids in the Shive Region, which are immune to Star-based attacks and are just a big pain.
  • Raphael, Lakilulu with Lakilester, and Albino Dinos are new boss fights.
  • Huff 'n' Puff takes awa your Life Shrooms and narcissitically thanks you because of them. I do know that you need to use Jump Charge then a certain jump badge on him (either Sleep Stomp or Shrink Stomp) on him, get rid of all of his Tuff Puffs a the same time with Skolar' Star Storm, and use Bow's Outta Sight before Huff 'n' Puff unleashes his lightning attack.
  • Bow' Spook now deals 3 piercing damage.
  • You can get a lot of EXP from an Amayzee Dayzee, but only once. I started battle with Bombette's explosion, had Mario charge a lot, had Bow hide Mario nce, managed to have Mario Guard against one of the singing attacks, and used tha Triple Hammer attack.
  • The HD textures are mostly compatible. I heavily recommend them.
