The state of Oregon has joined 48 other states in the union to allow “self-service” gas stations, meaning you can now pump your own gas as opposed to a “full-service” station where an employee does it for you.
New Jersey is now the only state to not allow self-service at all.

Man, growing up I really admired the idea of American homesteading, being independent and living in a free country. Where any man can make it. But when you have to see shit like this, even if it's only a minority, it makes you realise that nowadays the American Dream is seen by some as nothing but the dream of sitting on your ass. People nowadays dream of a world where the state mothers each and every special snowflake and most importantly (apparently) protects you from the coldy woldy gas nozzly. SAD.

For real though, I'd still rather live in the US than with European Kebabs. Fuck that noise.

Take the "keep forcing people to pay attendants to pump gas" argument and generalize it to all retail service and you're pre-prepped for most political arguments over the next 20 years.

You think blatant protectionism for gas attendants is bad, just wait until McDonalds decides to automate 95% of their restaurants. Bills to protect precious retail are going to put nonsense like Oregon's ongoing argument whether their local populace can pump their own gas (an argument I'm not certain the right side won, going by my experience with your average Portlander) to shame.

I'm actually pretty bummed about this because, I live in OR and have a small child and now I am just going to have to make sure my fiancee is able to pump the gas before we trade the car off, because there's no way I'm stepping out of the car and leaving a 4month old in there. Not even for a second.

Also, It bums me out that a bunch of gas workers are going to get laid off because of this.

If you don't have the skill to pump you own gas you probably shouldn't be trusted with driving a car in the first place.

Eh, I don't know dude.
In OR at least there's a huge homeless population and drug abuse and meth heads/tweaks/crackheads, etc, shootings and "gang" shit happens a lot.
OH and we have Donald "let's blow up the earth! climate change is FAKE NEWSSSS" Trump.

I'd rather live in the EU.
Trade?

WTF kind of moron is not capable of pumping their own gas?
If this basic task is so complex that it eludes your grasp of how to perform it, then I have a word of advice...

GET OFF THE DAMN FUCKING ROADS YOU PRIVILEGED SLACK-JAWED MORONS BEFORE YOU KILL SOME POOR BASTARD THROUGH YOUR OWN INEPTNESS!

This is the same level of grown-up-child behavior you hear about when 30 year olds don't know how to cook a hot dog.

"Cooties" aside, it stands to reason you'd be wearing gloves on a freezing cold day, or have them within reach in your car for when you need to get out. And not to get too political, but it's dumb little stuff like this that really shows a divide in how people live and vote. They can't do shit for themselves or understand why someone would take that personal responsibility to do it, so they hand it off to someone else; be they gas pump pajeet, or a nanny state.

I had to think about the last time I saw an attendant pumping gas in my state, and it was during the 90s at a station that also doubled as a mechanic. The idea that somebody can't figure out how to pump gas is insane, the pumps literally have stickers on them showing you what to do.

So what is the justification to make self serve gas illegal, because it's been almost twenty years since most stations let you pump before paying.

Jesus take the wheel. just pay at the pump you can literally keep line of sight on the baby the whole time

It takes about 30 seconds to figure out how the gas pump works if you've never done it before. If you're somehow :autism: enough to nearly die while pumping gas, you have more incentive to learn. If you're that concerned about germs, buy some hand sanitizer. If you're that concerned about the winter cold, dress appropriately. Employees at gas stations do other things besides pumping gas, they'll be fine. Your stupid kid or disabled grandpa will be fine. It's not that big of a deal, crybabies.

Call me dumb, but I didn't even know that there were stations where employees pumped it. All of these people complaining are probably just incompetent. If you've never done it before, you should've at least observed what the employees were doing. It doesn't require a professional.

Wait a minute, isn't pumping gas one of the things that kids aspire to do? Since when was there this culture of letting someone else do that for you?

And there's also the option to turn your cellphone off before pumping, since there's probably people out there that are afraid of a rogue spark starting a fire or explosion.

This is amazingly dumb shit to get pissed over.

For the lazy assholes, they need to get over it, it's not some herculean effort to pop your gas tank open and fill it till it's full.

For the ones scared of germs, it's a GAS STATION, you can use gas to clean your damn hands, and besides, germs are everywhere, so that's pointless to obsess over.

For the people who think it will kill you, unless you are stupid enough to light a cigarette or just stand there huffing the fumes till you die of it, lol, what idiots.
