There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

The South Koreans conducted another live fire drill and they seem to think that the Norks are preparing to fire off another ICBM.

I don't blame them. With all the shit's Kimmy boy is pulling these days, they'll be needed.

The fact that China and Russia are both still wanting to talk to Un, despite the recent threats toward China gets to me. I mean I get it, no one besides Fatty wants another war to happen, but he'll never listen at this point. In fact, if they've been getting to the point where they'll threaten one of their allies with a bomb, I'd say it's about time China and Russia start getting desperate with the Norks.

Seriously, why are the three most powerful countries in the world still treating him with kid gloves? If this were a middle eastern country then they would have been carpet bombed into oblivion by now.
is it literally because they have no resources that can be salvaged when they lose? Or is it because they actually do have weapons of mass destruction?

Both, from the way they're treating it.

But you've also got to factor in the aftermath if Un and his army is destroyed. Yet that problem could also be easilly solved just by denying them access or just shooting them. They'll never get to the point where the rest of society is at, so why even accept them?

Hello, this is the news. The new Dear Leader is a 7 year old.

Why not, it's North Korea.

He'll somehow come to power in the next year, and then one morning we'll wake up to find Trump has declared war on North Korea after the kid Glorious Leader logged onto the Minecraft server Barron Trump plays on and raided his fort.

"My beautiful son Barron, who is terrific with computers, by the way... worked very hard to collect those 64 diamond blocks."

There's also the risk that Un hits Beijing or Vladivostok with his nuclear bomb. Neither the Chinese or Russians have invested much in BMD, and NK could easily chuck a missile over the Yellow Sea - a bunch of them actually, I'm pretty sure some SCUD's have enough range to deliver chemical weapon payloads to Beijing as well, so we're talking death tolls in the millions possibly depending on targets and timing.

Yeah, when you threaten your last ally, your nation is not going to last long. I still stand by my prediction that China will acquire the territory, use the rare earths, and leave North Koreans to their device.
NK has some of the biggest reserves of rare earths in the world, and there's a lot of stuff in the country that's not tapped because NK lacks the tools to do so.

So it's actually just the latter.
In a parallel world, North Korea would be one of the richest countries in the world. Unfortunately, we're dealing with an incompetent nation and an exceptional fatass who refuses to work with others even if it directly benefit his agenda.

I wonder if China takes over, they will raid North Korea to mine its rare earths? At that point, they become more economically powerful than the United States and perhaps stave off their inevitable crash long enough. Under a less likely reunified Korea, it could boost South Korea's economy again and maybe (:optimistic:) help North Korea out a little.

But would Trump let China take those minerals? Because he's been all about sticking it to them whenever possible.

Not unless he wants a war with China and if he has sense, he will not.

He is going to have to accept that the only way the USA (and the rest of their allies) are getting any of the rare earths is if Kim Jong-Un bombs a city or island and as such, are basically granted permission by China to invade.

But would Trump let China take those minerals? Because he's been all about sticking it to them whenever possible.

He's also all about America having the greatest natural resources in the world, whether or not that's actually true. In any case I don't think he's interested in going to war with China.

China is not up for a prolonged occupation, they haven't fought a serious war since the First Korean war, they have numbers but very little real world skill and they are OK at knocking over smaller countries by force of arms but not prolonged protracted engagements.

The way I see it going down is an unhappy Coalition, of China, US an SK and maybe a few other nations providing supporting roles, and then the country turning into a East an West German situation where the North of North Korea is a Chinese puppet state and the South of NK becoming a trashed part of SK that undergoes a rebuilding effort. Staying that way for a few decades and then when China goes belly up them reunifying.

And knowing China, that's going to be out of the cards unless they're really, really desperate and are out of options. Or if Kim decides to nuke a Chinese city. Which he very well might given his mental capacity and how he now views them just as much an enemy as he does the US and its allies.

So, at this point it's a question of when, not if, in the following two scenarios:

A. Somebody ultimately gets sick of Fatty's constant threat of nuking somebody, China gives them a free hand to deal with that shit (if it isn't China themselves), and they just demolish the Kim dynasty once and for all.

B. Dear Leader actually launches a nuclear warhead at somebody - hopefully a country that will intercept and destroy it in time. But at that point, everybody will turn on NK in an alliance of convenience because nobody actually wants an unstable power that launches nukes at people they have no real power to even wage war with. It would be pointless nuclear manslaughter to stroke Kim's dick like he thinks in the worst case scenario, we can't just chuck nukes back at him and reduce all of NK into a smoking crater with more advanced weapons like the MOAB.

Personally, I think the ideal situation is that NK basically pisses off Russia somehow with their unhinged 'we nuke you soon!' bullshit and Putin finally decides to shut the fuckers up once and for all. China is OK with Russia as I recall so pretty much Putin gets to flex some muscle and lay claim to those rare earth metals to bolster the Russian economy. Crushing Kim for good would also earn a lot of brownie points with people Russia's kind of pissed off in recent years (basically the majority of the members of NATO between the spit slinging with the US and the Flight 17 Shootdown by Ruskie backed separatists who should not have had that kind of firepower).

We should wait and see where Fatboy fires the next bottle rocket and if that succeeds. If he flies it over Japan again they might shoot it down, but there's always the possibility of it crashing there, so pretty much a declaration right there. China will of course wash their hands at that point and let the molestation begin.

Who knows, the next launch may even be a test of L'il Kim's latest toy. That will be guaranteed to piss everyone off.

The next test will likely be in the next 2 to 8 day's they are still in the made to measure phase of there missile production so don't have many to hand and what they do is mostly a poorly understood iterative adaptation of the last model they launched. Most of what they have isn't really original as I've said elsewhere they are using poorly understood mistranslated 3rd or 4th hand designs they have acquired on the black market, so they are trying to make that design mess work and catch up on a lot of scientific and technological development in the process and with the extreme anti failure culture in NK they have to be very sure it will work before they hand Fatty3 the big button marked launch.

What I find interesting regarding this situation is why he's flexing now, he's not popular with his General Staff most of whom didn't like his dad much and either knew KIS personally or were alive and serving during his reign in some respect. The Asia region has been unusually peaceful as well this is making him and the rest of the family worried that somebody might just turn their eye to the region's problem child and ideas they don't like are slipping in from the outside that they really don't want. So he's getting worried about what's going to happen not to his country but to his position of personal power - he's seen the last of the old style dictatorships take a tumble during the early days of his coming to power and he's bricking it.

This is exactly it. Fatboy sees nuclear weapons as a safety net for dictatorships. Iraq didn't have nukes, and they got invaded. Libya didn't have nukes, Gaddafi got toppled.

He's desperately flailing about to prevent getting chucked off the gravy train. Even though the conductor is now asking for tickets...

I doubt Japan would make the same mistake twice when it comes to Kimmy's loonacy and his bombs.

I'd actually be more surprised if Russia actually took charge of the situation as @Optimus Prime speculated. Russia's just as angry at Un as everyone else, and even had a jet circle NK just to show off that Putin wasn't playing around anymore. And if talks break down (as they likely will), they may be among the first to strike for all we know.

Hell, if one of the Iranian countries decided to declare war against the Norks, that would be even more entertaining. But I don't see that ever happening.

Frankly, it's a factor of many things- Between Trump entering office, KJI dying, and Fatty being a certified loony, even compared to his father and grandfather. There was no question that shit was going to happen. It's just a matter of when, or if, those generals will be able to pull off a successful coop and assassinate Un's fat ass before China, the US or anyone else gets to him first.

He's desperately flailing about to prevent getting chucked off the gravy train. Even though the conductor is now asking for tickets...
And even with his nukes, everyone hates him and would attack regardless if they could. The issue is with how unpredictable Un is in regards to his tests.

I only brought up Russia because I know Putin's been chomtping at the bit to get the Ruskies back into combat that's more local (read: not Syria) and North Korea is just an easy target to go after which nobody would mind being taken out of play on the world stage.

One possibility that i never see anyone talk about to explain why their still willing to use diplomacy even now is because they know that if a war breaks out it could give a clearer understanding of horrors they've been enabling for decades, they probably have a better idea than we do about what goes on inside their borders.

Even if a war goes horribly for the US/SK, a handful of the tens of thousands of people who've been interned in the labor camps or family members of the millions of people who've died from starvation in front of a news camera could make it all seem worth it and make NK's "allies" look horrible, and it wouldn't just be China and Russia, that includes Cuba and countries in the middle east and Africa who've dealt with them.

A lot of "anti-imperialist" world leaders who've defended NK could have egg on their face if this is blown wide open.

Pakistan (keep in mind that both Pakistan and India are nuclear powers) would do it just to piss off the West if they thought they could get away with it.
