I do wish that Nintendo brought back the 3DS as a <$99 console. It doesn't need to be as powerful as the Switch so if they could make it as cheap as possible it'd be popular
I’m still kicking myself for not buying a New 3DS back when they were around $80. All that talk about 3DS being a great homebrew machine doesn’t really apply to the old models.

Do people even make 240p screens any more?
There's got to be the equipment in a factory somewhere that can do so. Smart thermostats and other devices could use those screens so the ability to make them cheap has got to be floating around.

The technology is there so it has got to be possible to make it cheaply enough if Nintendo carefully chooses parts.

I think if Nintendo were to go back to trying Dual Screens. I think they would possibly end up letting the user use their phone and allow it to connect to whatever this new console would be and allow the player to use the phones touch screen to control the game. I think it would be a interesting idea if they could manage to pull it off.

I disagree, I’m havin a great time with games up to GBA on my old 3DS… I presume you mean for higher end stuff like 64/PS2, right?

Kingdom Come Deliverance just came out on the Switch, and apparently it seems to be a pretty decent port on par with Saber Interactive's record

I bought a New 2DS XL the day they announced they stopped making them for this reason. Because it has a built in Arm-9 processor along with its main processor, it can play DS and GBA games natively with a compatibility layer. However, I have a GBA that I modded with a really nice IPS screen, and it really puts the 2DS XL screen to shame. For just about everything other than DS and 3DS games, you're probably better off with one of those Chinese deals like a Miyoo Mini+. That handle stuff like PS1 very well where even the New 3DS struggles to maintain a consistent framerate. That being said, being able to play GBA, DS and 3DS games natively still gives you access to perhaps the greatest library of games that has ever existed when you include ports.

I really wish someone made a 3DS knockoff so I can get a cheap one off ali. I can still get the 2DS XL for a decent price on ali so i'll probably do that once I got other bills dealt with

Oh no, 3DS could never hope to emulate PS2. And even N64 is barely acceptable on a N3DS, let alone Old. But I’m talking about actual homebrew games and ports, which generally assume you have a new model and will barely run otherwise.

Ha, I did the thing where I meant PS1 and wrote PS2. My bad

But yeah I know what you mean regarding the custom homebrew stuff, I’ve seen some of it and it sure seems like stuff that the old 3DS can’t run

3DS actually has a really killer source port of Super Mario 64 with a map on the bottom screen and everything.

Yeah, but that's not emulation, it's port. It also works like shit on the old models.
Uh...yeah? That's why I said it. He said he was more interested in New 3DS to play homebrew and ports, so I was pointing out a killer port that works well on the New models.

Was not putting a N in front of 3DS in my post confusing?

No, I said I was more interested in Old 3DS, and that ports like that tend to only run well on New 3DS. There’s also the Sonic mobile ports that, last I checked, just can’t be comfortably played on an Old 3DS.
Personally I find GBA games best on a GBA, DS games best on a DS (ideally DSi XL), and 3DS games best on a 3DS. Its neat you can do it all on 3DS but always feels compromised.
Screen scaling’s a bitch, huh?

I… don’t see the confusion here. I’m saying I wish I had gotten a New 3DS since my current model, an Old 3DS, can’t run homebrew nearly as well as a New 3DS, which is what people refer to when they talk about the 3DS’s homebrew capabilities. As for N64, I’m saying “it barely runs on a New 3DS, so by extension it definitely doesn’t work on an Old 3DS”.

I think what's causing the confusion is I talked about the Mario 64 port in response to your comment about homebrew that runs well on New 3ds. I wasn't arguing with you or anything it was more like," Yeah this is one of those ports and it's very well done." The guy after me for some reason pointed out that it wasn't emulation which is what kind of had me scratching my head because I never said it was. When I was replying to him I said you said you were interested in N3DS homebrew and what I should have said was you were talking about N3DS homebrew. What a mess.
