So... I just found a reason to hate the Switch:

It's a fragile little fuck.

I've already had to replace one because of some "blob on the screen" issue that wouldn't go away.

And now my current one... somehow the USB-C port on bottom got damaged and the thing won't charge!

I wish there was some alternative way to charge the battery. Because even if I get a replacement console, I can't get my account data off of it without powering on the Switch... and its at 2% power, not long enough to do anything with. I'm basically afraid of losing my accounts and thus, all the games I purchased.

Nintendo's own repairs cost $100 and I don't know any local repair shops that would be cheaper (and I've been told going with such people is risky anyway unless they have a good reputation).

Gah... remember when Nintendo's consoles used to be indestructable? The NES... I only ever had to replace the cartridge slot, and that was after decades of service. My SNES I've owned since childhood still works. My N64, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance... all work fine. The Switch though.... even the PSP is more reliable.

Ugh.

TL;DR This post was both a venting rant as well as asking Kiwis for advice.

they weren't all flying until gen 9, which is what made it even more irritating
pokemon like Toucannon were actually just on the fucking ground while other birds randomly weren't
then Scarlet and Violet came along and said "hey what if we made ALL OF THEM fly and only let them stay on the ground when not battling that'd be cool wouldn't it"
Toucannon being on the ground all the time came with its own problems:
Of course, the solution would be to give all birds both kinds of animation. But that would require effort.

I feel you. The joycon rails on mine are a bit fucky and any replacement from a local means they have to cannibalize another switch basically, and they’ll charge me through the nose.

It took six years to break? The DS line had problems with flappy screens, and the consoles don't get as much wear and tear as the portables
Most retarded thing I've heard all day
Sky already mentioned that he's had to replace his Switch before this, but is only now commenting on how fragile the console is because this is his second one that's broken
Which is an absolute feat considering that the Switch feels flimsy as fuck in handheld mode and the Joycons are similarly weak-feeling (this is coming from a girl with tiny girl hands that does not get the feeling of "I could snap this in half if I tried" very often, and yet within an hour of me playing handheld for the first time I was thinking that exact thought. It's the same reason all of those "gaming controller" attachments for iPads feel terrible, and the same reason why people didn't like the Wii U gamepad)

Not to mention that the DS line was practically as durable as the fucking gameboy- which, may I remind you, withstood a bomb to the face and still worked- I've dropped mine from 20 feet up onto concrete and it still works flawlessly. There were company tests ordered by the higher-ups to ensure that it could survive something like that due to its handheld nature. This especially goes for any model past the very first in both lines; I'm convinced I could nuke my 3DS XL and it'd still work at this point.

The shift in quality from those to the Switch was and is immediately noticeable the moment you use them both, with the former being very obviously crowbar'd into handheld usability instead of made for it, and the fact that it took someone six years to notice is what shocked me in the first place

EDIT: excluding the original 3DS from the "high quality" part might've been a bit presumptuous

You can get standalone Joycon rails from china, they aren't soldered in its just a flex cable. Don't be a nigger, fix it yourself like a wyte man.

Also get some metal Joycon lock pins, the plastic ones shear super easily and then the controllers fall off from any motion. I swapped mine to metal ones the first time I swapped the joysticks out and have never had an issue since.

My Switch's top vent has lost all its vent pin things, and the plastic is attached to the front shell, so I cant fix it without replacing the entire digitizer assembly. I have to live with the top just having a hole to the metal heat sink. The Switch is much more fragile than their older handhelds, but its not a new thing. The 2dsXL is the most fragile thing they have ever made, the top screen doesn't have any metal backing, just a thin plastic frame, so the second you apply pressure to the top screen the thing cracks like an egg. I dropped my New 3dsXL once without the case on and it cracked the corner of the LCD, now its leaked all around the edges, and swapping the screen is a pain in the ass because its a fragile ribbon cable that gets looped around the hinge.

The USB C charger is different since that's soldered onto the main board, but any repair shop that does board repairs should be able to easily swap it out. You can buy a replacement module from ifixit for 10 bucks.

I would just get the USB C module yourself, then take it to a trustworthy repair shop and ask them to de-solder the old one and solder in the new one.

and the same reason why people didn't like the Wii U gamepad)
I find the Wii U gamepad to be actually quite comfortable and solid feeling. It feels a hell of a lot more solid than the Switch, and honestly the two sticks at the top is the layout I prefer. It feels like the Steam Deck really, just lighter. Valve also adopted the sticks at the top layout and improved it by moving the D-pad and buttons next to the top as well, my new favorite layout.

In terms of control layout: Steam Deck > Wii U > Xbox/Switch > Playstation

A day late and a dollar short, but I enjoyed the direct.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks great, glad to see a 2D Mario that isn't just another entry in the New SMB line. Also like how trippy the game looks.

Happy to see Pikmin 1 and 2 getting ported to Switch, nice to have all four main games on the same console. Lovin' those Glow Pikmin.

Glad to see my boy Petey Piranha is finally being added into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's been too long since he was last playable.

Penny's Big Breakway looks neat, always up for new 3D platformers.

Never got around to playing the older Dragon Quest Monsters games but always wanted to, glad to see a new entry is coming.

Also it was only in the Japanese direct, but Good-Feel showed their new game Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru: Oracle Saitarou no Sainan!!, which is a spiritual successor to the Goemon series. Looks great, hope it comes out here in the west.

I don't disagree, I'm just citing other arguments I've heard

it's not preferable for long hours of gameplay though

After an hour of Mario Kart 8, my hands start to cramp up. Same shit happened with the 3DS, both the OG and "new" model.

rounded rectangles is really not a completely comfortable feeling after a while.

3DS grip case. Those things are worth every penny.

rubbishy redone score
Are you smoking something? That score sounded AMAZING. And apparently, the original score is being entirely redone by the original composer, Naoko Shimamura.

I've also heard bad things about one of the later games having some sort of twist that ruins the entire series or something.
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time revealed that the world of the Star Ocean games is actually an in-universe video game, an MMORPG to be exact. How you feel about the twist is going to vary, a lot. People whose first Star Ocean was that game tend not to be bothered by it.

Who's hyped for that Mario RPG remake?I know I am. I can't wait. It looks really nice and clean with the new graphics. It seems like Nintendo is going to be getting a lot of money from me in the next few months. The only thing that sucks about the Mario RPG remake announcement is that it releases in November and not in the next month or so. I am sure Nintendo will do a physical copy for it. One of the biggest games ever can't be digital only. I hope they don't make it a time released.

I have had my Switch since 2018 and it still works. The only issue I had with is that the screen would dim slightly and then go back to be bright as usual. This was caused by the auto bright setting I turned on. I thought there was something wrong with my Switch. The only issue I have heard of is the screens getting scratched by the docks and the analog stick drift. But you can always buy new set of joy-cons for it.

Not being able to transfer your profile and save data to another Switch is stupid. The only way you can do it is if you pay for Nintendos online service. I think it's saved on a cloud server and then you can transfer it to a new Switch system. It should be on the micro SD card though. Not in system memory. But then you wouldn't have to pay for the Nintendo online service.

Wonder does look great. Pikmim 1 and 2 finally getting Switch ports. The MGS 1 2 and 3 getting ported to the Switch. The Mario RPG remake. Nintendo is really hitting hard with these announcements. I have a gaming PC and I haven't bought a major game released in a while. Looks like I will be buying some Switch games though. I just hope they all get physical releases. I am sure Wonder will. The Pikmim 1 and 2 ports might. Mario RPG probably will see a cart. But the MGS ports are kind of iffy. I hope Konami does a physical copy of them. The MGS ports also say Volume 1. Meaning they will port other games in the MGS series over. Could this mean a MGS 4 and MGS 5 switch port. I know MGS 5 is super well optimized and will run pretty well on anything while also looking pretty good.

Had the same highs for the most part but I am genuinely confused at how much garbage time there was. Pokémon is garbage time for me but hey it sells, people like it I guess, not everything can be for me. But there was so much fucking farm bullshit, and the one that looked like a fucking mod for Fortnite was insulting to see marketed at all. It felt like the only highlights were shit designed 10+ years ago. Mario Wonder looks great but it looks like it plays like NSMBWii, which isn't a problem but I was just hoping for a little more in terms of new shit.

You can do switch to switch transfers without switch online I'm pretty sure. You just pay for cloud save emulators and then extra emulators and dlc with the switch online packages

You just need to have connected your Switch to a free Nintendo account. The premium online service is not required. My memory is hazy but I am pretty sure the Animal Crossing island transfer is also free. So no part of the process will cost you money outside of acquiring the new console to begin with.

I don't want to bug you too much, but I will use you as a minor example. Nintendo sends out detailed reminders about how to do system transfers via the system's news channel as well as through email every time a Switch variant (hardware or simply color/art) comes out. It is not hidden knowledge.

They've got a few different scenarios outlined pretty well here: https://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/how-to-transfer-data-nintendo-switch/

I've done transfers with two Switch units and a whole bunch of DS systems over the years. And especially with my 3DS, thanks to system transfers that thing is jam packed with games and activities.

Nerrel released his review of Tears of the Kingdom:

And my God, the Switch is overextending itself to handle this game. This console truly is the first console that I feel has limited Nintendo themselves with its lack of performance. I can't remember the last time a Nintendo game ran so poorly on its own hardware...other than the Switch version of Breath of the Wild.

Meanwhile, Nintendo have, as previously stated, dropped the bomb that they are holding a direct tomorrow. And everybody and their momma are putting out their predictions. I think OJ from Player Essence has the most down to Earth and best formatted prediction video:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Gtff2mt4OgQBut what do you guys think? What are your predictions?
Lol, Star Fox, Wild Trax (named something else in NA, can't be assed to look it up), Perfect Dark, EB and FE 64 (canceled because teams couldn't figure out N64 development), the total lack of N64 RPGs outside of Paper Mario.

Fuck it, lets go deeper. Sprite size limits on NES and SNES, color limitations on NES, blurry SD textures on Wii, Gamecube disc size limits, no video on N64, no color on Gameboy. Or did you think it was a stylistic choice to make all original GB games black and white?

Edit: Minor objects in Kirby:FL lagged far harder than anythi g in TotK, too, if you want to talk about more recent stuff.

Prime 4 has been trapped in development hell for like 6 years now, yes I do happen to be curious about the thing that was announced. It finishing would also mean Retro would be free to do something else.
4 years, Retro scrapped all the BN Singapore stuff when they took over. That isn't development hell, thats just the normal timeframe for games these days.
