the 3D modelling guys who've been using the same damn models since 2013
Jesus Christ, it's been THAT fucking long!? Even the 2D games got updated sprites every game, INCLUDING animation. Why the fuck did they get so goddam lazy when the made the switch to 3D models? Pokken Tournament's models look more appealing than this fisher price baby shit they keep reusing so much to the point where the colors are fading and the tear marks are showing.

This is literally the Capcom copy/paste job with their 2d fighter sprites all over again except somehow WORSE since you have more freedom with 3D movement but they never fucking do shit with them!

it's arguably been longer since I think these models were even used in Pokedex Viewer 3D (from 2012) and XY was in development way before 2013
slightly related: you know you've fucked up when gamecube models look arguably better than ones you made a decade after that console's release

technically the gamecube models are just polished versions of the N64 models. They were also developed by HAL (N64) and Genius Sonority (GC) which actually made an effort to give them actual personalities, which is my other big gripe with the new Pokemon games. Your examples being one of the things that annoy me... someone actually said "all bird pokemon MUST fly when battling as a default" and they actually went with that. Not even the 2D sprites had them flying all the time.

they weren't all flying until gen 9, which is what made it even more irritating
pokemon like Toucannon were actually just on the fucking ground while other birds randomly weren't
then Scarlet and Violet came along and said "hey what if we made ALL OF THEM fly and only let them stay on the ground when not battling that'd be cool wouldn't it"
and re: personality... I occasionally wonder if that part was due to lost time, because some of Creatures' models do have genuine character

Also stellar but not pictured here: EVERY SINGLE FORM OF UNOWN, which all have unique animations that make every single letter special
It's like they got 5% of the way through making good animations and then had to rush to shit out the rest of them, and their priorities were totally fucked up so the ones they got looking good were basically random
It's very strange
(I'm also aware that Creatures didn't make the Channel models, but I think my point still stands since I genuinely think that HAL + Sonority's work looks better than Creatures')

Enjoyed the Direct today. Lots of interesting options coming our way.

I just realized something... is the movement in the Mario RPG remake locked to 8 directions? I don't see any full 360 degree movement.
I was specifically watching this in the trailer as they showed it and yes, it looks like movement is still the same as the original. Makes me wonder if this is another case of taking the SNES game and simply upgrading shit rather than rebuilding the game.

Which is fine by me. That's the style I prefer. Take the old thing, make textures look nice, up the resolution as much as you can, fix any bad, unfun bugs while leaving the fun ones in and otherwise don't fuck with anything.

So most remakes and remasters and whatever are extremely disappointing for me.

I'm glad that SMRPG is getting recognition but it has the typical cursed remake issues including the rubbishy redone score which is always a bugbear of mine.
I know they wouldn't do this, but man I wish composers would remake/restore soundtracks using the OG HQ instruments from before they had to be downsampled to fit on the console like video below.
Would be so kino

Probably so they could re-use more of the animations with less work.

I don't think that's really possible with a SNES game, its probably just them being as close as possible to the source material, but I highly doubt they are using any code from the original.

I believe that's what Yasunori Mitsuda did for the Xenogears and Chrono Cross soundtrack releases, not sure if he did the same for Trigger though.

You are probably right. But if it turns out they are not changing much in terms of level and scenario design, why not port in dungeon maps and the relative locations of things and start building out?

Pokemon only just stopped releasing modified Game Boy games after Sword/Shield. We'll give those Mario RPG boys some leeway.

bold of you to claim Pokemon has stopped releasing modified Game Boy games

99% sure that's not how game dev works

Literally nobody cares about Star Ocean here and that makes me sad.

They don't even need to go to that effort. They already released a soundtrack CD back in the 90's while all the original recordings were still about:

That's what I was thinking while watching the reveal. "Why didn't they use the good version they already released? This is a Square game, of course there was a bloody soundtrack release!"

I've tried to play the 1/2 remakes on the psp, but they just turned into generic fantasy games that were pretending to be sci-fi. The little I played I didn't like that much, the battle system was weird and the story was just boring. Maybe it gets better but perhaps I'm also spoiled by having played games like Chrono Trigger and Xenogears first. I've also heard bad things about one of the later games having some sort of twist that ruins the entire series or something.

I'm gonna be honest. Super Mario RPG is one of my favorite games of all time. I've replayed it at least two dozen times. I don't care how lazy the remake is, I'm still buying it. Fortunately, it looks pretty good from the video they posted.

I'll get the SMrpg remake, but it doesn't come out until December right?
