They've been saying how they want to do it right and listen to the community.
I was apprehensive because it's an EA game and they could just be lying, but this is reassuring. It also proves most of the leaks legit.

They have a playtesting program that'll let you beta test Skate 4 if you get in that you can sign up for here:
I hope they improve character models. Skate 3 had plasticy models, especially for females. They almost look male.

During the trailer there's a bit where a bunch of comments pop up on screen and one is "please let us make non binary skaters", so your wish for non man looking females isn't looking good. That's the main thing that I'm worried about, they seem to be pozzed.

Then play Skate 3. Actually, they are accurate to "non binary."

Look at them! I'm willing to bet EA just used male character models for everybody.

Thanks but no thanks. I'll just stick with Session.
Session and Skater XL both seem to have rocky releases.

Skater XL released in like 2020 with barely any content and floaty physics. The devs only add new maps made by modders to the game and the only way to make the game fun is to mod it and use a custom physics editor script so your character doesn't ollie 6 feet in the air.

Session seemed to be doing a bit better, but they just announced a couple months ago that they're cutting a bunch of promised features like vert skating so they can release a 1.0 in September. At the state the game is in right now, I'm predicting a glitchy launch.

I was just asking what killed that genre.
A combination of stagnation and corporations

There's only so much you can do with skate games, but EA and Activision wanted yearly releases, meaning eventually they start becoming samey. Sales declined because people got fatigued so the publishers dropped the franchises.

Years pass and kids that grew up with Tony Hawk and Skate are hungry for new skating games. The indie scene gives us Session and SkaterXL which are received positively, plus the spamming of EA's social media with Skate 4.

If you release mostly the same game every year it causes fatigue unless it's a zeitgeist game like CoD or fifa. If you release the same game once every 10 years then people are just happy to play it on the new consoles with shiny graphics and a few new features.

I think it's unfair to lump in EA with Activision. Activision wants endless sequels while EA made three Skate games and they were done. They made three* Dead Space games and they were done. They made 3* SSX games and they were done. Three* Dragon Ages, three* Mass Effects but people that constantly complain about them releasing sequels wants one thing more than anything: sequels, endless sequels.

*shut up

Skate 4 has just been confirmed as free to play cross platform and just called "skate."

Reactions are mixed.

This could be a make or break moment.
It could be an online only massive multiplayer F2P game with no real single player campaign.

Yeah, I'm skeptical about this release. Moreso if they're going into the free to play route.

Skate 3 had an unlock all for 6.99 (admittingly, I bought it. I was a kid.)

"Support it for years to come," I heard THAT before. It would've been better to market this as a one time title (reboot) with paid and free DLC to support it.

As long as controls well and I can play single player I'll be happy. This does have me worried because EA can just shut down the servers arbitrarily and this becomes a lost game.

There's a lot of hype. People are already skate montages of the pirated alpha, but the fact it's a f2p live service might kill a lot of that momentum.

For someone like myself that owns the first three Skate games on the Xbox 360, I was surprised to find out that they would make a Skate 4. The first three really exemplified skate culture being brought back into the limelight during the late 2000’s and early 2010’s.

This new one might seem a little too dated, and or worse, them trying to replicate what made the last two Skate games so popular with teenage kids.

Most of what made the early games so great was the fact that the challenges and Career Mode they had made you immersed in the idea of doing challenges to be a part of a popular skating crew that could make your way to the top, even while branding was seen a lot in the game:

Either way, I’ll still be interested to see what ”skate” has to offer for the fourth installment, but I doubt it will come close to anything like what was shown in the early 2010’s. That’s just something they can not redo with this new one.

Oh, that's right. If this is free to play with NO BOXED release, this game would be kaput when the servers shut down.

Skate 3 was popular because of its wonky physics.

You can thank Pewdiepie for bringing Skate (3) back into the spotlight.

This thread still active? I got some info to spill on this. Have been in the pre-alpha since mid-2023.
Doesn't an NDA prevent you from that? So far, from what I've seen, it just reminds me of Skate 3 for better and worse.

It only prevents me if they can find me, there's nothing stopping me from just recording footage of the game.
