Might not be dead-dead, there's just less incentive to put in the effort into marketing towards kids who'd want the toys. As far as I know, kids still like robots, there's just no shows for them that's worth it right now. I don't even know if Super Sentai still has super robos anymore.

The mecha otaku are still out there getting their garage kits and such, but the newer shows just aren't leaving much of an impact. Darling in the FranXX seemed like it would, and look what happened even before it ended. It's sad what's become of the genre since the 2010s.

You guys think that the super robo genre is dead?
No, we've gotten new Takara shows regularly since 2016 (Shinkalion is on right now) as well as several Yuusha manga such as Sworgrader and GaoGaiGar vs Betterman. Sunrise is also going to make a new Wataru show; there was also a mini web-series in 2020. There's also a lot of Dynamic Pro stuff in the pipeline, such as Grendizer U, live-action Getter, and an Italian Jeeg vs Grendizer comic. We also can't forget how popular Bravern was; hopefully that gets more "adult" Yuusha-style shows made.

Sentai still has robots. There was a recent mecha show that had an impact on adults, and for better or for worse, it was G-Witch. It got people who never cared about Gundam before watching the older Gundam shows and buying model kits, which is exactly what a new Gundam show should do. SEED Freedom was also wildly successful and may prompt more SEED anime, plus Bravern was the third most popular anime in Japan when it was on.

Oh shit they finally made swordgrader into a manga!? Hooooly shit.

Man reading GGG vs Betterman brought a smile to my dumb face, after the ending of FINAL it was bittersweet but now seeing how its playing out its pretty fucking wild.

Hopefully theyll animate the Astray series because i wanna see some Red Astray Kai action. Personally i enjoyed seed destiny even if it is kinda shit, but i like Shinn(even though his character was badly written imo) and i love the Destiny design. Havent seen Seed Freedom but considering how good it was received, hopefully theyll make more seed related series.

You know ive heard the name Shinkalion alot but havent got around to see it, is it good?

first series was pretty great, they work with Google so it's really google maps and really youtube, and really Japan Rail, they get music licenses to parody old Japan Rail commercials among other things, weirdness includes regular guest stars Hatsune Miku as Hatsune Miku (robot train pilot) and Ikari Shinji
it's a bald faced commercial for robot toys, the bullet train and Japan Rail, but it's very sincere about it in a charming way
the second series is okay, but really didn't catch lightning in a bottle like the first
I caught a bit of the new one, it's there I guess?

Honestly mecha designs eventually will start to meld as in some will look like the staples of the genre(gundam, Brave, getter etc) and that is okay as long they give them a unique thing thay separates them from the other, either by having a unique gimmick or the story around it is good enough that it doesnt matter if it looks like a getter for example in design. Still that shouodnt stop people from trying to be creative and go for new designs or forms.

Gargentia would've worked had there been more episodes, if you ask me. The lack of breathing room has hurt mecha shows, I believe, on top of lack of innovative designs.
Agreed. Gargantia was a cute show. It's a shame the sequel plans fell through too. Although the sequel LNs are translated now. I should check those out.

Even with something like Bravern, which was a ton of fun, still felt pretty rushed. I kinda get it there. Small studio and whatnot. Still glad people dug it and that Obari finally had a hit on his hands. As much as people like him as a designer and animator, his directorial works tend to get savaged by critics and fans.

2024 is a pretty decent year for mecha stuff so far. Bravern and SEED Freedom did great. Plus Shinkalion just started again. There's also Grendizer U and Aquarion Memory of Emotion later this year. Plus projects without a date like the new Macross, new Wataru, Hathaway's Flash 2 and probably something else I'm forgetting.

Real shame that that show didn’t stick the landing. Yet there are still people that have said it was one of the first mecha shows they really got into, so there’s that.

G-Witch is the Gundam equivalent of the Fallout TV show and Fallout 4. Managed to attract a horde of teeming tourists who knew nothing or at least heard some about the franchise and proceeded to rape it to near oblivion. I doubt these tourists would handle watching the older Gundams as the Fallout tourists would with FO1/2/NV/3.

Thanks for letting me know. Are there any other obscureish mecha LNs translated? I've got quite a few and I'm always on the lookout for more. I'd love it if the Dendoh and Da Garn novels got translated.

Roujin Z is a light hearted whimsical exploration of the potential future of Japan trying to adapt to dealing with an aging population demographic as told through the medium of GIANT ROBOT FIGHTING that welcomes aficionados of all associated genres.

Also Macross Frontier doesn't entirely suck provided you've enjoyed the earlier shows.

Also also let me know if you have a working torrent for Patlabor for the love of God.

Also also also if you like tsundere high school hijinks and giant fighting robots and hate Russia check out Full Metal Panic.

Well, there's Tomino's Gundam trilogy. The recent Gundam SEED Freedom novel also got a translation. Really, there's varying chunks of Gundam novels out there that have a translation. Full Metal Panic (Aside from the new FMP Family novel) is all translated. The first two Yukikaze novels are translated as well as the entirety of Crest/Banner of the Stars. Most of the LOGH novels are translated too.

I think maybe one or two of the Knight's and Magic LNs are translated too?

Obari's directorial works are uneven as he had been good but not great in the 80ies to mid 90ies. Then off and on going from good to shit starting in the late 90ies to present day.
