I've only recently gotten into the genre about a year ago, it has some of the coolest most batshit insane action I've seen in any media. I'm much more into super robots than I am into real robots. Mazinkaiser SKL, All Getter OVAs (Shin vs Neo, Armageddon and New Getter) and Dai-Guard (pretty obscure super robot spoof with salary man as the pilot) are among my favorites, but the others I've watched throughout the year were also pretty good too.

The others I've watched so far are:
Getter Robo Arc (very divided on it, but i loved the remixed OVA soundtracks and callbacks it had)
Shin Mazinger (the plot is a big ass mess, but the OP, action and mazinger itself is badass as hell)
Mazinkaiser/Mazinkaiser Vs The Great General of Darkness
Kotetsushin Jeeg
The Big O (season 1 is perfection, i dont like season 2 and how it tried to be "meta", it ruined the immersion for me)
Mazinger Z: Infinity
Megas XLR (i know this isnt a mecha anime, but still falls into the genre)
Linebarrels of Iron (i hear the manga is better, but i did really like the mecha action and linebarrel's design but i can really see the glaring issues it has)
I LOVE Shin Jeeg. It's got some of the most exciting battles I've ever seen in anime. 2005 Gaiking was also similar. If you liked the Getter OVAs, you should read the Ishikawa manga because those are even better.
I always figured Patlabor would be the closest we'd get to reality if we had mechs irl, where they're essentially just glorified forklifts.
CE 73 Stargazer and the Petit Mobiles are close contenders.
Pumped for Grendizer U. With Fukuda and Okouchi at the helm, it's guaranteed to at least be... Interesting. Nice to see a new Dynamic thing with some interesting staff choices. As much as I love Jun Kawagoe (Directed all the Getter OVAs, Arc, Kaiser SKL and a bunch of other Dynamic stuff) I'm happy they gambled on some weird staff.
It looks like a crappy Gridman ripoff with the Grendizer name tacked on, but let's hope it will be like Dendoh in some way. Wouldn't it be cool if they used stuff from Dendoh Season 2? I'm hoping there won't be too many silly high school/onii-san antics, but I'm pretty worried because I hate what they did to Maria and because Okouchi loves his high schools. At least the mecha look cool.

Fukuda does like to recycle concepts/heavily homage his past works. Like all the Dragonar and Cyber Formula nods in SEED. So, it'd be nice if he showed Dendoh the same sorta love.

Hoping the show doesn't do Maria dirty. She's exceptionally cute and was a real standout for me in the original. But Sayaka being around all but guarantees she's going in the cuckshed. Unless Fukuda decides to make Sayaka a turbo-cunt like Flay Alster.

Guys i gotta confess that when watching Gaogaigar and Gaogaigar Final, i would always yell the name of the attack alongside my nibba Guy. I know its childish, me being an adult and all, but idk theres something about mecha anime that just makes the kid in me jump out XD

My most favorite mecha anime to date is Dai Guard. While the setting and enemies is more akin to those of super robot genre, the robot and the circumstances around it, along with the characters are leaning more into realistic territory. The protagonists are working class adults, there's dispute between the company who owns the Dai Guard and the military, collateral damage does matter and so on. Simply put, it's a real robot show packaged as super robot.

Unlike many of mecha series post Evangelion, it doesn't dive deep into cynicism. Even in the most dire situations, the protagonists and their allies always found and bring hope. The show also has relatively minimal to almost nothing of romance plot and sexual fan service, things I don't really like to see in a show about giant robots.

If I may add, vidya wise, I love the Super Robot Wars series. It's my gateway to mecha anime, and also to Japanese language. I'm not even joking, if not for 4th grader me picked up that copy of Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden over 20 years ago, I might not have my current education and career, and consequently, wouldn't have met my wife.

Gotta ask since we are mecha enjoyers.

Is there a mecha serie or game that influenced/impacted you?

Mine is Gaogaigar. Its a serie that i saw during a time in my life where i timid and a coward and couldnt stand up for myself, but seeing it and how Guy would always talk about courage lit something within especially the quote "Victory always go to those with courage" ever since then i developed some sort of self confidence, standing up for myself and courage(which has led me to do some pretty stupid shit) is gonna sound pretty gay but if i hadnt seen Gaogaigar i would've ended up being some sort of soycuck bitch thay bends the knee.

Saw it before I watched the series proper, still holds a special place in my heart and is an artistically beautiful film. Story may be a mess and I understand people's grievances with it, yet I can't help falling in love with it every time I rewatch it. Was my first mature anime that wasn't on TV (I got it for my 13th birthday), made me a permanent anime fan. Watching it before the TV series probably helped in why it is I respect the manga and appreciate how different it is, something about Gaea allows it to have a different approach to each Escaflowne story that I think works in its favor as a fantasy.

I fucking love The Big O. I've never been sold on an anime faster than I was in the first couple of seconds when Brick Ballades Houston Street plays while hearing Steve Blum introduce himself. Honestly, it makes me wish there were more "noir like" anime, because something like that is right up my alley. Also Pile Bunkers are rad as shit and anybody who says otherwise cannot be trusted. I know a lot of people didn't really like S2 all that much, but I was loving that too. At a time when I wasn't really watching anime that much anymore, this show got me right back into the medium more than anything else. It also has one of the best dubs in anime and was symbolic of a time where anime dubs could be just as good as the subs. They don't make shows like The Big O anymore.

Did you REALLY watch GGG if you didn't imitate yourself slamming the final fusion button every single episode?

Big O and Esca both have really great senses of mass to the animation

Getter Armageddon is my favorite mecha anime, I’d even argue maybe one of the best anime in general ever made. It hits all the right marks, a good story, badass characters, amazing mecha and monster designs, action is absolutely peak. One of the best OPs ever, HEATS. Ryoma is one of the best protag designs in anything I’ve seen in a long time, dude is an absolute chad.

I could write a whole ass essay, but I’ll just leave it at that. It’s became one of my favorite pieces of media in a long time and what kinda sold me on the series. At some point I’m probably going to check out the manga since I hear it’s also as crazy as the OVAs.

Mazinkaiser SKL is a close second, it hits all the same vibes, and the short obscure as hell manga really does a lot of justice to fleshing out the characters and story you don’t really see built on in the OVA.

The Getter manga's go more wild and if you remember the ending of Armaggedon, they explain why is that came to be and why is everyone there(keeping things vague as to not spoil since it is a pretty cool fucking hype moment leading up to that and more people need more Getter in their lives

I began watching Tetsuin 28 FX, and it's basically a Brave series with remote-controlled robots. It reminds me a lot of Fighbird and the Gridman toku. The main kids are working with a detective agency run by a middle-aged Shotaro Kaneda (the old Tetsujin shows up too) and watch things from a computer like the Gridman kids. This show drips with coolness -- I love Tetsujin's hangar, and there are some super cool transforming enemy robots and Tetsujin support vehicles. Tetsujin himself is super sleek and rugged -- it's basically Obari style (he throws an Obari punch at least once an episode anyway) and I like how we get to see his insides regularly.

The mecha designs for this show were done by Goro Murata, a member of Studio OX (the company that did that gorgeous cel-animated Transformers art), which you can find at this link in addition to designs from other shows like G Dangaioh, The Big O, and Dancouga as well as video games and manga.

yeah FX-go is some good shit, very nice example of a The Next Generation that doesn't totally bury the previous generation
