Yeah, I guess I differ from you in that I honestly couldn't give two rips about the rest of the cast aside from Hiro and Zero Two, and thought the overfocus on Mitsuru and Kokoro over the former was a huge mistake. I wanted to see more of the former couple continue to go through situations that strengthened their bond together, especially given that Hiro was starting to become a hybrid himself, and that Zero Two wasn't exactly all that pleased with it, as she still had feelings of self-loathing over her inhuman nature.Wow, really? I found the two main characters to be an unbearable drag in the second half of the show, so much so that I'm more inclined to call them non-characters. Fortunately the rest of the cast are able to pick up the slack (I especially like the drama of Mitsuru and Kokoro), but story of the second half overall goes in a bad direction that doesn't live up to the intriguing mystery of the post-apocalyptic dystopian society initially presented.
This frustration and disappointment leads me to conclude that Darling in the Franxx is not worthwhile, one being better off watching some other mecha show instead.... it was a huge mistake to have the main villains be aliens and go to space to fight them like it's Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill all over again.
That was where I felt the series was at its strongest, and while we did get some of that in the second half, it was mainly focused on things besides them, so their scenes where like finding a glass of water in a desert.
I do agree that the decision to make the main villains what they ultimately were was a mistake though. There was very little build-up of it, and it also completely changed the whole focus of the show.
Again, I still have fond memories of the series, and still wish it get some kind of continuation to redeem the whole thing. Even so, I totally get why people dislike it.
