“What a delightful surprise our gamers will receive when it is finally revealed that Max Payne has actually been Black this whole time!”

"No - you see, his ability to slow down time is just representative of the sense of hyperalertness that all Black people must adapt at all times in this country. His ability to keep on going, no matter how much he gets hurt - that's because of his noble Black spirit that has been forced for so long to endure under the oppressive system of--"
"But what about the painkiller addiction?"

Max Payne is probably my favorite video game trilogy. I love replaying all three games every now and then, picking up on subtle details in the world and in the story. The series has a deceptively simple story but its rich in detail. The world feels alive and adds dimension to the characters and events. And that's just the story, the stuff piecing the gameplay together, which is frantic and fun as hell.

The first one's probably my favorite because I'm a sucker for crime revenge stories. It's probably the most difficult one too and there are a few sections that are outright cheap, but I still adore diving through doors, scoring headshots as I fly through the air before quickly getting back up to finish off the stragglers. I didn't care much for 2's story at first primarily because of the twist villain (I still don't care for that twist very much), but as time went on I came to appreciate the sheer level of detail and subtlety with Max's character. It's the kind of game where you could replay it and start to pick up more on the inner workings on the characters, and even if I don't care for the villain the climax is wonderful in spite of it. I also like 3 more than most. I understand why people don't, especially with the eternal cutscenes that would make Kojima blush plus the sad-sack direction Max's character goes in, but the cutscenes are exquisitely put together and while the story's probably not as good as the first two, it's still an engagingly dark tale. The shooting's also the most visceral I've ever seen in any shooter ever, which elevates it above the rest of the cover-based shooters that came out around that time.
people don't like 3 because it's not max payne - it's gta sneed edition

If it's not James voicing Max, fuck off.
Mark Wahlberg it is then.

I didn't know Remedy still owned the rights to Max Payne. What about 3 then? Since Remedy is handling this port, this should fair better.

I fucking hate remasters now, when they were new I thought it was great but they're all demasters that are never want you want and now gta trilogy looks like the Sims I expect they will use the excuse of "cartoon style" please prove me wrong. (:_(View attachment 3153664
Simply upscaling the original comics would likely work. Or they'll go the Mafia: Definitive Edition and completely rebuilt 1&2.

I hope they don't try to milk Max Payne; his arc concluded with 3. There's no need for another one.

ngl I'm going to let my heart rule my head here. Remedy won't fuck this up and it'll be kino.

I have faith in Remedy as they've been rock solid so far, but Rockstar has a track record for horrible remasters.

I'm happy the hacks at Grove Street Games aren't touching these remakes, but I'm cautious about Rockstar calling the shots.

Remedy made one of the Crossfire X campaigns, which was shit.
Remedy can make trash if they don't have the correct publisher support.

I liked Jesse, I thought she was well written and acted. That was helped by the great supporting cast too though.
Did we play the same game? The Control I played had an actress given poor direction throughout and never once actually reacting to any of the weird shit that happened. She was an autistic robot who blankly spoke her lines because the actress wasn't given any context to her scenes so played it safe. And the lines themselves were so generic as to not give context on their own. She's a boring character in a story that is somehow exceptionally boring despite all the weird shit happening. Because every single weird thing in Control is something seen before in better games, movies and creepypasta.

Max Payne 1 and 2 are not great choices to remake as imo they still look pretty good, low poly but very sharp textures and they overall have a great sense of style, especially Max Payne 2.

That said it is cool to see the return of this ip and have it be introduced to a new generation, they better be pretty damn impressive looking though to justify this as well as staying faithful to the original games' stories and tone.

I mean...Rockstar despite losing both the houser brothers...you know the guys who friggin FOUNDED the damn company and actually cared about video games back when. They haven't fallen too far off the wagon the way other companies have especially in recent times. Apart from constantly repackaging gta 5 and now Red dead II again and again as their own in house money presses, It's still nowhere near as bad as the falls other companies have made.

All i ask...ALL....I...ASK...is for3D realms and the original people involved with the development of max payne to at least be working closely with Rockstar to at least have the game as close to the original as possible. and yeah as you said at least the hacks at grove street games aren't being given the keys this time. A max Payne remake doesn't NEED to be Resident Evil 2 and 3 or crash n Sanity. Spyro reignited good but it really shouldn't be gta "definitive edition" level bad either.

TLDR: I'm not holding my breath for this being "Dazzle me and take the industry back to 2001-2004 good," but until launch day all i ask is it not be as bad as other western remakes/remasters have been in recent years either.

Big disagree on this part. Rockstar has completely shit the bed. Name one other company that has developed only a single game in the past decade. And GTA Online is such a broken, buggy and downright dangerous (due to the power hackers hold) piece of shit that it's definitely far worse than every other company.

Well...at least they're not buying up small studios then disposing of them the second they stop bringing in money (EA) or milk their ups in the most ball brained asinine ways. (Konami)

OK OK I admit I'm grabbing at straws here but..idk man I just... Just want to be positive about...something in life for once in a lifetime...

My mind is a whirlwind.

On the one hand, I have some degree of faith in Remedy still.
On the other; it's current year, and that means fucking everything you love up.

Is this a faithful remake, or a remake that allows for creative edits and retcons?
Will this remake try to keep the John Woo-inspired frantic action and noir tone, or will they try to modernize it with OTS cameras, slow/realistic movement ala MP3, and the 3-gun system?
Will they keep the original mechanics from each game? Or are they all going to be the same new contemporary one?
Will Sam Lake and Timothy Gibbs reprise their roles as Max, or is James getting the honor of being all three phases of Payne?

As a purist, I want a faithful remake that simply tries it's best to preserve the original vision and designs with updated visuals/audio & performance. I want the centered camera and arcade-like movement that allows Max to stack bodies higher than Trump tower.
I want to see Timothy Gibbs and Sam Lake keep their protagonist spots, even if it creates a dissonance for newcomers. Let's be real, the people who will support this on day 1 are the diehards. The mainstream never really cared after the original (Yes, I'm well aware than MP2's financial failure can be attributed to practically 0 marketing).

Above all though, I hope R* aren't so stupid as to sandwich Max Payne right before a GTA release FOR THE THIRD FUCKING TIME.
MP2/3 were denied their time in the sun by GTA:SA/V respectively. MP3 in particular never had a chance by being unfortunate enough to be caught between the V teaser trailer and V photo media releases. I still remember every MP update/announcement being hammered with comments about GTA V. Self-sabotage on a level I had never seen.
