I want to say selling toys but I don't know if current day children actually buy toys. Pretty sure it's all Gen Xers in a midlife crisis.
I think the real reason Sony did these dumb villain movies I am going to guess is to build up to a shitty suicide squad/avengers type movie with the Sinister Six.

As for Madame Web, best guess is just to keep the rights to that character longer.

it looks like kevin fiege and co are going full speed ahead with the the m-she-u. this is going to be unpopular opinion but i agree with this course of action. its too late to go back to core fans and appease them. if the studio did change course, they would offend their new audience and the alienated original audience will still not come back. so the studio has to stay the course.

i think the brand recognition is still there and there is enough of the core fans and normies to continue with the woke/dei association with the mcu. The problem woke/dei is the storytelling and the tendency to make these female and/or poc characters too overpowered and mary sue because the studio doesn't want to offend their new woke audience.

as i see it, the only two options for the mcu are to 1) continue the course, hope the dei and woke fans will be enough to replace the original core audience, hope that ai tech will get to the point where cost are so low that profit can be made in the margins (i don't have confidence that the writing/storytelling will improve) or 2) shut the studio down for 10 years and reopen in the 2030s to capture that 2010s nostalgia.

The DEI/woke fans as a group of significance don't exist. They never did. If they existed those promoting this crap wouldn't have to "force behaviours", be more subtle with their messaging, rely on access media and censorship to try to establish a positive narrative, hide in the shadows (look at the SBI reaction to exposure). More fundamentally; it would not have been repeatedly shown to be people repellent whenever identified and failing hard.

AI tech reducing costs? Maybe. Maybe not. So far AI is showing all the signs of being another tech bubble promoted by venture capital, cross subsidisation and hype. The only ones who are clearly raking it in are the hardware manufacturers; esp Nvidia with GPUs and AMD with CPUs. There's also the issue the AI is detested by the woke. In general terms there are no signs of AI, tech advances generally or anything else reducing costs for Marvel the opposite being the established trend. Maybe hiring cast and crew on the basis of their checkbox compliance rather than competence tends to lead to a less efficient workplace in addition to an outcome that generates less income.

Shutting down for an extended period. Sure. If nothing else it'll staunch the losses. Not sure 10 years would be long enough for the bad rep to dissipate and they just keep hammering nails into the coffins of those IPs. It's not just with the films; TV, comics, games. It's across the board. They need an extended period of not doing more damage and ideally actively reverting from what is causing that damage. I'm seeing no sign of that. They are still firmly in denial mode blaming everyone but themselves.

If this were true, they wouldn't be getting rid of She Hulk and Captain Marvel in Deadpool and Wolverine.

I honestly think they just realize that Scarlet Witch is one of the last "OG" characters they have that people kinda like.

Not parody.

It seems that Phases 4 and 5 were even more consistent than was thought.

We found out that despite being generally liked, GoTG3 lost money (Deadline's claim that it made $124m includes, amongst other things, Disney paying itself $180m which gives a $56m loss!) but at least there was no doubt about Dr Strange 2 being a shining success. It took almost $996m at the box office. Surely even Disney couldn't F that up.

Well..... tax filings from last week disclose that the estimated budget of $200m was exceeded by just a smidgen. They actually spent $414.9m on production. They got a tax credit netting the actual production outlay to $350.6m. The generally accepted (for what that's worth) marketing spend on this one was $150m. i.e. Box office receipts (assume 50%, $498m) did not meet production and advertisement costs.

Oh dear, never mind.

From the corporation that is placing rather too much reliance on the upcoming Captain America film (the one without Captain America) subtitling it "New World Order" and, finally realising that expression carries a little baggage, re-subtitled it "Brave New World" because that's so much better and carries no dystopian nightmare fuel baggage!

I can believe it's not parody though I'm not so sure that Disney Corp itself isn't a parody.

I find myself constantly asking "Who the fuck asked for this?" with everything entertainment these days.

It's like Disney is starting to believe their own paid shills and bots.
