4. Mission 2: Moonbase Assault
I ultimately needed to make significant changes to your selections in order to have enough money to even approach all of the equipment everyone asked for. For one thing, everyone is stuck with Armor 1, except for NerdShamer who's weapon and ammunition was so fucking expensive I compensated by giving him
none. Everyone else lost things like melee weapons, their grenades, sidearms, etc and on top of that I determined that the only thing the difficulty level changes is the amount of Credits you have to spend before each mission, so I dropped that down to 1 to have a little bit more cash to go around. Moths is also handed a regular L50 Lasgun instead of the Heavy Laser he requested due to budget restrictions.
There were a total of four different possible starting locations, one on each corner of the roughly square base. The computer systems we're supposed to destroy are located in the rough center of the base just about. I deploy on the Northwest and Southwest portions of the base. Fireteam 1 is composed of Bookmark Cuck, SilenceisViolence, NerdShamer and JohnDoe, while Fireteam Two is composed of Neo-Holstien, White Devil, Mooger Meng and Moths. I intended to split up Bookmark and Silence to have each be the pointman for their squads and make it more like real fireteams but I fucked it up.
We need 100 Victory Points worth of destroyed equipment to win. Each destroyed Databank or Analyzer is worth I think about 5 points. There's a central room in the middle of the base housing the majority of them, a room below it housing a handful more and a few scattered around in the southeast that I really hope I don't need to make it over to in order to win the map.
There's no music that plays throughout the levels for some reason, so you get whatever I was listening to on my playthroughs.
Getting in the doors goes okay. I forget to equip weapons again partway into Bookmark's turn but fortunately it turns out that isn't fatal.
These bald fuckers are who we're up against. I hope they're not as badass as Regnix's combat droids or we're gonna get cut to pieces.
Fireteam One makes it inside okay. I get White Devil and Moths inside from Fireteam Two, but I'm still not used to the movement mechanics of this damn game and waste a bunch of Neo-Holstien's AP. If you click to a destination the unit can't easily make it to, they'll still turn and try to walk there which means you can blow AP even if the unit doesn't move from its spot. There's no "save for X fire" button either like XCOM, you just have to keep track of it manually. At least the counter in the corner will give you a rough idea of the AP cost to move a unit to X location so you don't have to add that shit up manually.
Silence catches the enemy Seargent (sic) wandering around but doesn't have enough AP for Opportunity Fire. Somehow he doesn't get plugged before our turn rolls around. The enemy is all the way down the hallway and across the room though, and Silence is just armed with a weedy little pistol. Still, JohnDoe and NerdShamer are too far behind to make the shot.
Holy shit! Silence makes not just one shot, but two, and kills the bastard!
I move up as best I can. I fuck up Neo-Holstien's movement again and leave him stuck.
We can headcanon it as his helmet not fitting properly or something.
Letting the enemy come to us pays off, and one walks right into White Devil's sights. I have him put roughly a quarter of a battery into his autofire, should be enough to leave nothing but the guy's smoking boots behind.
Uh.
Oh fuck.
My namesake weapon spectacularly fails
@White Devil as he gets unceremoniously waxed during the enemy's turn. The same enemy also wastes
@Moths who I apparently didn't leave with enough AP for overwatch.
Neo-Holstien can't actually shoot through that door or window despite the game assuring me he can see the enemy. Fuck!
Fireteam One still has a job to do, so they keep on moving towards the control room, or whatever it is. I really hope I don't get stuck with only one group of troopers to do this mission with.
Bookmark Cuck gets reaction fire in this cafeteria-looking area.
What the fuck. That pistol is badass.
I have JohnDoe and NerdShamer split off from Bookmark and Silence since apparently our pistoleers are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves.
Mooger Meng gets reaction fire on the enemy that killed two of his comrades. Unfortunately its with that shitty sniper rifle.
Holy shit, that sniper rifle is actually good for something! Mooger avenges his fallen comrades.
The members of Fireteam One are back to back keeping each other covered for the slow advance, while Fireteam two finally makes its way inside the base. Bookmark and Silence have made it into the control room, but I don't choose to waste their AP on any of the machinery just yet. Those tall booth things are the Databanks while the blue things that look like photocopiers are the Analyzers.
Silence quickdraws on an enemy that rushes into the control room.
The accuracy of the pistol isn't quite as impressive on regular fire, but Silence still takes out his target and scores his second kill.
Jesus!
I'm not taking any chances this time, I have JohnDoe put every bullet and AP point he can into this autofire.
Of course, he kills him on the first shot and the rest of the ammo goes to waste. This game is definitely the ancestor of XCOM.
The computer massacre begins.
Neo-Holstien and Mooger Meng are currently making their way down a long hall that leads to the auxiliary control room.
Bookmark and Silence proceed to treat the control room like a Twitter or Facebook server farm.
This game may be just about 30 years old and have clunky as fuck combat mechanics, but trashing this defenseless computer equipment is surprisingly fun.
Slower but no less important, I have Neo-Holstien and Mooger Meng start trashing the auxiliary control room.
I think this whole thread would be just as crestfallen as I would if we didn't get to see that rocket launcher go to some use. I move NerdShamer up to waste that room in the middle. I figure three Databanks and two Analyzers is worth a rocket.
Fuck em up, Squad.
Not to be left out, JohnDoe gets in on the computer smashing by taking out the handful of Databanks in the room he and NerdShamer stormed.
Here goes nothing.
BOOM
Unfortunately, in addition to 3 Databanks and 2 Analyzers is also included 1
@NerdShamer who was caught in the blast of his own rocket. I honestly expected the rockets to have the explosive power of bunny farts like the hand grenades but my choice to not outfit NerdShamer with any armor might have also fucked him over. At least its better than getting sniped from across the room and never getting a chance to fire that thing.
Silence enters that room at the bottom and starts wasting databanks.
He doesn't even manage to shoot the third one before the scenario automatically ends. For the record the enemy guards weren't worth any Victory Points, only the equipment was.
Casualties (Total Kills):
Llama King (0)
White Devil (0)
Moths (0)
NerdShamer (0)
Survivors (Total Kills):
Bookmark Cuck (1)
Neo-Holstien (0)
Mooger Meng (1)
SilenceIsViolence (2)
JohnDoe (2)
ChucklesTheJester (1)
Observations:
- I suppose the L50 Lasgun is perhaps not as impressive as I expected a fucking laser rifle to be.
- The pistol doesn't fuck around; Bookmark and Silence cleaned house with it and both of them only had to reload once, even when I had them plugging away at the databanks.
- I think I accidentally purchased too much ammunition for everyone, as it appears each weapon starts out fully loaded. I probably could have afforded at least the Heavy Laser for Moths if I had been aware of this earlier, for all the good it would have done him.
- Shooting enemies through doorways or windows is a tremendous waste of time and ammunition in this game.
- Grenades are expensive.
- Pistol ammunition is not.
- The lower difficulty really didn't seem to have an effect on enemy accuracy or lethality, or the accuracy/lethality of my troops. I know Bookmark and Silence scoring those pistol kills made it seem different but the people with rifles missed a bunch of shots even when they were just taking aim at immobile computer equipment.
Bear in mind going forward that I'm not actually sure what kind of armor, if any the enemies had. White Devil may have just gotten very unlucky with an enemy equipped with Armor 4 and Bookmark and Silence may have plugged guys wearing Armor 1, so the pistol may or may not be a reliable weapon going forward.
See you next year.
