2. Mission 1: The Assassins
Here's a look at the weapon's selection screens. The interface is VERY primitive, if you want to take anything out of a soldier's inventory you have to dump everything. Also costs were a concern, so I ended up having to bump some armor choices down. I also couldn't afford the extra money for any grenades which means Chuckles and Bookmark Cuck are probably going to be pretty useless, but I suppose we'll see when we get on the battlefield.
Here's what the deployment screen looks like.
And here's what I've got together. I'm thinking Mooger and Bookmark can try to blast some assholes through the windows while JohnDoe and Chuckles rush the front door . Llama King can cover with that sniper rifle I think, It's got to be good for something. Incidentally, this is what the interface looks like when you don't have anyone selected.
Here's a shot of the map screen, which identifies an enemy as waiting in that lower room there (the blue box, its hard to see) and of Mooger's inventory.
Bookmark can see the first enemy, which looks like a cybernetic Alec Baldwin, and oddly enough we can even view its stats for some reason. But for some reason I don't have the option to open fire with bookmark. Uhhhh.
Oh fuck, I have to actually go into everyone's inventory and equip their weapons. Everyone started out unarmed! Fuck!
At least the AP cost to fire the pistol is fairly low because its easy to draw. Choosing to fire your weapon brings you to Line Of Sight Mode, which blacks out all non-obstacle and target objects on the map apparently to clean up your view of things. It also helpfully lists the AP cost of each action in the side there.
Choosing to fire bring up this menu, where you can choose an Aimed Shot, Single Shot or Auto (if available) or to throw the object you're currently holding. There's also a Cancel Action button and a Cancel Shot button. After choosing what you want to do, you have to click on the target a second time to confirm. Its extremely clunky. I have Bookmark fire twice and I don't catch the split second shot of the bullets leaving the gun, but he misses both shots and only takes out the window he was trying to shoot through.
I move Chuckles up I guess, someone's gotta open that door. I don't have enough Action Points left to have Bookmark fall back.
Curiously, the Hidden Movement screens show you the actions each unit is taking even if you don't get to see what they're doing. The art on the screen is clearly a traced screenshot from the first Alien.
Fuck.
@Bookmark Cuck gets wasted right away by the Droid he failed to kill. Those fuckers have great aim too.
Well we're off to a great fucking start aren't we. I swear I've seen this robot somewhere before, but I can't seem to place it.
I try to get everyone grouped up around the front door.
I have Chuckles go in first to draw enemy reaction fire since he's completely useless with that knife. He somehow does not get killed by the enemy he spots, so I have JohnDoe take aim and prepare for some revenge.
When doing an Auto shot, you can manually add more shots to the default three shot burst for 1 AP a pop. In this case I figure it would be a smart idea to hedge our bets but at the same time i don't want to have John magdump like a Somali militiaman so I settle on six shots.
John sprays all over the place. only one shots manages to hit and the Droid is still on his feet.
Fortunately John has enough AP for a single shot, which does take out the Combat Droid though I failed to get a decent screenshot of it.
Mooger is so horrendously over-encumbered by his equipment that he doesn't even have enough AP per turn to take out his weapon! Fuck!
As the enemy turn starts up, I get the distinct feeling we are fucked.
The same Droid that took out Bookmark Cuck takes a shot at Chuckles, who fortunately manages to tank it.
I try to move John up since he's the only one in this battle with a decent weapon, thinking the enemy wasted their reaction fire on Chuckles, but it turns out the have another fucking Droid covering the entrance. Whenever someone scores a chance for reaction fire in this game this screen comes up, which features yet another traced shot from Alien.
@JohnDoe is plugged and immediately killed. I end my turn, hoping they'll have to come out of the building and I can score some reaction fire on them with Llama King's sniper rifle.
Bookmark Cuck's killer casually wastes the defenseless
@ChucklesTheJester right afterwards. In XCOM its customary not to have units take cover right next to corners and apparently that holds true in this game as well.
FUCK. A Droid snipes
@Llama king across three rooms and the entire courtyard! He doesn't even get a chance for reaction fire!
Mooger is totally defenseless now.
@Mooger Meng is pathetically finished off by an uncaring cyborg.
Well that went, profoundly bad. Even though we got one of them it doesn't even count because it was just an expendable combat Droid, Regnix himself is the only target worth anything.
I decide that even though I said I wouldn't do any do-overs, I'm making an exception this time because the team lost due to the fact that I didn't read the manual and had no idea what I was doing. This time I micromanage everyone's inventories a bit more. Mooger gets one fewer battery and the lightest armor so he can actually fire his god damn weapon, and Chuckles gets a belt of hand grenades to make him more useful. I also bump Bookmark and Chuckles up to the highest armor tier so hopefully they'll stay alive a bit longer on the battlefield this time. John and Llama also get less ammo since neither of them had to reload once during the whole battle.
I take the time to scout out the location ahead of the battle, and it turns out that not only can the Laser Squad deploy behind the house, they can also deploy within the castle walls surrounding the perimeter, though there's very little obvious point in doing that. I place a small fireteam composed of Chuckles and JohnDoe to cover the back entrance while the rest assault the front. I figure Chuckles can be John's meatshield long enough for John to bust in the back way and waste Regnix while the majority of the Droids are busy trying to kill everyone up front.
The enemy turn passes by without much fanfare. Bookmark Cuck is in position to open the front door, and Chuckles the back. Chuckles goes first, swinging open the door and...
He's spotted by Regnix himself! John hurriedly radios that they've found the target.
Regnix takes the shot but narrowly misses.
Since Chuckles is still alive and has a bead on the enemy, I have him pull a grenade. Its only when I get to the arming menu that I realize I don't know if the game will let me set the grenade to 0 turns or not. Fuck!
I decide to play it safe and set it to 1. Chuckles tosses it...
Close enough for government work.
I have Bookmark pop the door open so Llama King can get reaction fire on anything that tries to wander out.
To my surprise though, its John who gets the reaction fire.
Its just a random combat Droid, but since that grenade still hasn't gone off yet I need to keep these things from massacring my troops again. I have John squeeze off an eight round burst.
Laser Squad troopers certainly have XCOM-level accuracy, but John does score a single hit. The enemy is still on his feet though.
John still has half his time units left, so, fuck it, lets do it again. This time I just have him magdump like a Somali anyway because it really seems like its the best bet.
He gets him this time. The other shots are all wasted but fuck it, it was worth it.
The Droid turn comes along, and I'm seriously worried about John and Chuckles since they're both basically defenseless now. At least that grenade is due to go off this turn, so anything that comes through that door is gonna be missing its legs.
Shit!
@Llama king gets sniped in the exact same way as last time. It was the female enemy Droid that did it too, designated girl fight I guess. Fortunately Mooger doesn't have any shots taken at him even though he's standing right next to Llama.
Regnix makes his move...
...and steps right on Chuckles's grenade!
The battle ends instantly after Regnix is killed, I presume this means that the Laser Squad just runs off and the Droids are too slow or stupid to give chase.
Casualties (Kills):
Llama King (0)
Survivors (Kills):
ChucklesTheJester (1)
JohnDoe (1)
Mooger Meng (0)
Bookmark Cuck (0)
Observations:
- That sniper rifle is fucking useless.
- Melee is basically worthless in this game due to the way reaction fire works. At least against this type of enemy.
- Grenades take significantly less AP to prime and throw than they do Time Units in XCOM, which surprised me.
- Pistols have a very low AP cost to draw and fire. This means they couple pretty well with grenades, I should have given at least one to Bookmark.
- All of the armors have a strength value, and the lighter armors not only weigh less but increase your character's strength more. So if you want to carry a heavy weapon of any kind, it may be beneficial to pack you in very light armor.
Since we have a low amount of names still I'm going to move survivors on to the next missions, but only if that same character also appears on that mission, since your stats won't be randomized each time that way. Newbies still get priority though.
