Science Let's Declare a Pandemic Amnesty - [LOL] We need to forgive one another for what we did and said when we were in the dark about COVID.

In April 2020, with nothing else to do, my family took an enormous number of hikes. We all wore cloth masks that I had made myself. We had a family hand signal, which the person in the front would use if someone was approaching on the trail and we needed to put on our masks. Once, when another child got too close to my then-4-year-old son on a bridge, he yelled at her “SOCIAL DISTANCING!”

These precautions were totally misguided. In April 2020, no one got the coronavirus from passing someone else hiking. Outdoor transmission was vanishingly rare. Our cloth masks made out of old bandanas wouldn’t have done anything, anyway. But the thing is: We didn’t know.

I have been reflecting on this lack of knowledge thanks to a class I’m co-teaching at Brown University on COVID. We’ve spent several lectures reliving the first year of the pandemic, discussing the many important choices we had to make under conditions of tremendous uncertainty.

Some of these choices turned out better than others. To take an example close to my own work, there is an emerging (if not universal) consensus that schools in the U.S. were closed for too long: The health risks of in-school spread were relatively low, whereas the costs to students’ well-being and educational progress were high. The latest figures on learning loss are alarming. But in spring and summer 2020, we had only glimmers of information. Reasonable people—people who cared about children and teachers—advocated on both sides of the reopening debate.

Another example: When the vaccines came out, we lacked definitive data on the relative efficacies of the Johnson & Johnson shot versus the mRNA options from Pfizer and Moderna. The mRNA vaccines have won out. But at the time, many people in public health were either neutral or expressed a J&J preference. This misstep wasn’t nefarious. It was the result of uncertainty.

Obviously some people intended to mislead and made wildly irresponsible claims. Remember when the public-health community had to spend a lot of time and resources urging Americans not to inject themselves with bleach? That was bad. Misinformation was, and remains, a huge problem. But most errors were made by people who were working in earnest for the good of society.

Given the amount of uncertainty, almost every position was taken on every topic. And on every topic, someone was eventually proved right, and someone else was proved wrong. In some instances, the right people were right for the wrong reasons. In other instances, they had a prescient understanding of the available information.

The people who got it right, for whatever reason, may want to gloat. Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts. All of this gloating and defensiveness continues to gobble up a lot of social energy and to drive the culture wars, especially on the internet. These discussions are heated, unpleasant and, ultimately, unproductive. In the face of so much uncertainty, getting something right had a hefty element of luck. And, similarly, getting something wrong wasn’t a moral failing. Treating pandemic choices as a scorecard on which some people racked up more points than others is preventing us from moving forward.

We have to put these fights aside and declare a pandemic amnesty. We can leave out the willful purveyors of actual misinformation while forgiving the hard calls that people had no choice but to make with imperfect knowledge. Los Angeles County closed its beaches in summer 2020. Ex post facto, this makes no more sense than my family’s masked hiking trips. But we need to learn from our mistakes and then let them go. We need to forgive the attacks, too. Because I thought schools should reopen and argued that kids as a group were not at high risk, I was called a “teacher killer” and a “génocidaire.” It wasn’t pleasant, but feelings were high. And I certainly don’t need to dissect and rehash that time for the rest of my days.

Moving on is crucial now, because the pandemic created many problems that we still need to solve.

Student test scores have shown historic declines, more so in math than in reading, and more so for students who were disadvantaged at the start. We need to collect data, experiment, and invest. Is high-dosage tutoring more or less cost-effective than extended school years? Why have some states recovered faster than others? We should focus on questions like these, because answering them is how we will help our children recover.

Many people have neglected their health care over the past several years. Notably, routine vaccination rates for children (for measles, pertussis, etc.) are way down. Rather than debating the role that messaging about COVID vaccines had in this decline, we need to put all our energy into bringing these rates back up. Pediatricians and public-health officials will need to work together on community outreach, and politicians will need to consider school mandates.

The standard saying is that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. But dwelling on the mistakes of history can lead to a repetitive doom loop as well. Let’s acknowledge that we made complicated choices in the face of deep uncertainty, and then try to work together to build back and move forward.

I declare you fuck right off with your plea for clemency.

You crashed economies. Shuttered millions of small businesses that needed our commerce.
You helped billion-dollar businesses become richer, further widening the class divide.
You allowed the government to lock us inside our homes for 2 weeks, which gradually became months.
You created a genocide of innocent animals out of fear they'd become infected.
You gaslit much of the population into taking multiple doses of untested, unregulated MRNA gene therapy because it was in their "best interests".
You let the old and infirm die alone during their final hours, pumping poisonous Remdesivir into them as their loved ones could only watch behind screen doors.
You damaged the young and growing into thinking what they were experiencing was normal. They will likely have learning difficulties for the rest of their youth.
You kept Australians from returning to their home countries and forcing them to live in strange, foreign lands for over 2 years.
You encouraged the arrest of people trying to celebrate special occasions, and reported them like you were some sort of quasi-Gestapo.

Even if you partook in none of this, you still endorsed it. And unlike the Nazis, no amount of Geneva-violating CBT will ever make you say what we want you to admit. The fact of the matter is you sat idly by as you watched your entire corner of the world be turned into a mini police state.

Milgram spins in his grave. We no longer need a dictator to prove his hypotheses. We know exactly how you'll act under a totalitarian government because you've already lived in one during your lifetime. And that's unwavering, unquestioning loyalty even as they dangle you over the pits of fire. All you need is a carrot or two, like a free doughnut, a free comic book, or a free burger and fries meal, and you'll do exactly as they say. It really is that easy.

Anyone reading my post, I want you to write down exactly what happened to you, your family, and your closest friends during the pandemic. If you ever become a published author or journalist, I want you to refine those notes and drill them into as many heads as possible. Because if you don't, as the years and decades start to roll on by, they will start to deny bits and pieces of the worldwide tyranny they helped to enact and keep in place. Videos will start to disappear from the internet. News stories will be rewritten or hid behind paywalls. And it will become harder for you to disseminate the truth.

Like Eisenhower said - "Start taking pictures - because someday some son of a bitch is going to try to say this never happened.”

They cannot be made to forget what they did to us. From the very first Chinese propaganda videos of people dramatically collapsing in the street, threatening that sights like those would happen in every Western nation across the globe if lockdowns weren't enforced. Remember them? They're almost gone from the surface internet. Scrubbed from YouTube and many news websites. Because it turned out they were the finest pieces of propaganda the CCP has fed the West since its foundation. It's like how they try and deny that March 16th, 2020 was the day lockdowns started out of mere technicality, even though anyone who was around knows they couldn't do anything starting from that evening, and that it functionally started on that date regardless if it was official or not.

Fuck your amnesty.

Fuck your amnesty.
Absolutely on point. It wasn't this bad in the United States at least where I live but I went along with it nonetheless.

Many of these types are delusional and will convince themselves it was no big deal, a bunch of fun hanging out in your PJs on Zoom. I honestly feel a lot of guilt nowadays for going along with it, in some ways I feel it's almost worse because I knew it was wrong but went along with it anyways. I personally know young people who were injured by these toxic shots, incredible sickness and suffering for something that would be nothing more than a cold for people in their 20's or 30's.

The only thing I can do is help expose the truth of this evil to atone for my part in it. For those who went along with this, even unwillingly, if you are not deeply ashamed of your conduct you don't understand the magnitude of what you did.

No, fuck you and fuck everyone in any position of authority who supported this, I will NEVER forgive them. Not 5 years down the road, not 10, not 20, not 50. Never.

Remember: they fucking knew better. THEY FUCKING KNEW BETTER; WE KNOW THEY KNEW BETTER BECAUSE WE SAW HOW THEY REACTED ON MAY 25TH 2020. FUCKING CRICKETS.

Crickets are not the response to close quarters mass gatherings occurring under a supposedly super deadly and highly contagious pandemic...unless you know better, or you actually are that stupid. BTW Hanlon's razor is revoked on this one because of all the OTHER shit that they pulled.

-You all used it to collude to crash the economy the INSTANT some psycho in the DNC realized they could sucker us in to supporting lockdowns, and even a retard like me knows the economy tanks under a president, he is NOT getting a second term. I'm including all the damage to small business under this header.
-You all used it to accelerate totalitarian social experiments to the detriment of literally everyone for NO OTHER REASON THAN YOU FUCKING COULD. See also: THEY FUCKING KNEW.
-You all used it to collude to steal the 2020 and forever tarnish election's integrity before a single vote was fucking cast, and I'm NOT only talking about the mail in fraud scheme. COVID rules preventing oversight due to puny human vision? And laughing about that oversight prevention during poll worker training? See also: THEY FUCKING KNEW.
-You all used it to subject the populace to a "vaccine" which the true damages of which we won't have an inkling of for at least a decade, and YOU FUCKING KNEW IT DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BUT REDUCE SYMPTOMS AT BEST WHICH WE NOW KNOW FOR SURE.
-You all used it to subject our children to a period of damaging isolation SIMPLY TO KEEP UP APPEARANCES. You KNEW they kids weren't an issue very quickly because even the overcycled numbers didn't tell that lie for them. See also: they FUCKING KNEW, but twice as hard.

I could go on but I think those are the main bulletpoints.

Every single psychopath is going to use the "forgive and forget" strategy to try and skate on this shit because those people fucking thrive on benefit of the doubt, so it's more important than ever to not forget or forgive. Get them out, shun them, and never listen to them ever fucking again.

edit: I swear I didn't paraphrase Becky's post :story:

You think groveling and saying “I howled for blood and demonized my friends and family with the rest of the tyrants but totes feel bad about it now! Uh-oh Spaghettios!” is going to make everything better?

And trying to lay into @The Lawgiver for “capitulating to the mob” (he wasn’t) when you yourself admit to doing exactly that? Typical liberal hypocrite.

Fuck you, and every other little trained monkey like you

And pray tell, Journoscum, what did people like you say when people told you and your insane COVID lockdown demands to go away and leave them alone?

No, we won't forget. Especially in this case where the OP of the article wrote multiple articles about how we had to force the fucking unvaccinated to take the jab via social pressure against their family members. Not only will I not forget, I will remember this bullshit and hold it against you for as long as I live.

It's rare that a whole society is given a chance to show which side of the barbed wire fence they would've been on. No one who didn't show themselves to be an eager little Nazi is going to "forgive and forget", nor should they.

What's still so infuriating to me is how transparently political the whole thing was. There was this underlying tone of a spoiled kid breaking his toys because he wasn't getting his way. When the entire establishment, from the NYT to the CDC started saying that "protesting" (rioting) for BLM doesn't spread COVID, but somehow Trump rallies and motorcycle conventions do, it was just too obvious to deny.

We're going to be paying for this authoritarian power grab for decades, and they want people to forgive and forget.

Fuck you.

"Mild inconvenience"

Fines
Threats of jail time
Harassment by the cops
Loss of employment
Ostracism

LITERAL media and political support of camps for the unvaccinated or those who refused to wear a mask.

It may not have gotten to state supported gulags and concentration camps, but the desire was there. One look at Twitter, MSM, and FB showed that.

Yeah, don't act like it was a "mild inconvenience over a dumb fucking useless dress code", motherfucker.
I never said the other bullshit they attempted (an somewhat succeeded) attatching to it wasn't fucking horrible lmao jesus fuck. The masks were fucking "useless", therefore it was all fucking useless and mildly inconvenient. What the fuck are you supposed to fucking do when you literally cannot buy food or keep a job without the thing? Shit was fucked for sure but my point is just because people were forced to wear the shit to buy fucking food and keep their job it's not the same thing as accepting gulags.

I do agree there were some fuckers that seemed to be really really hyped up fro the death of """Antivaxxers""" (not even fucking antivaxxers but literally people wary of fucking side effects from the fucking jab jesus fuck) And there's no way I'm going to view those fuckers the same way as I did before this shit took place.
What absolutely fucking pissed me off about the mask shit and the feet apart shit in general is the fact they turned a complete blind eye to the2020 riots where people were packed together like sardines in the fucking streets screaming and spitting on each other but if families tried having some form of fucking gathering of any kind it was considered a fucking "super spreader event". Shit was fake as hell and it was blatantly clear what the assholes were pulling there.

Compassion is the last refuge of the sociopath.

And he will abandon it the instant he gets so much as a sharpened stick within arms-reach.

First and foremost, Trump mentioned that his administration was monitoring the China virus in his 2020 SOTU speech, which would be torn up by the Crypt Speaker. Then the so-called journalists claimed the virus was just Trump's attempt to distract Americans from his impeachment trial. The main health official and the former mayor of NYC said don't let another example of the president's racist fearmongering keep people from enjoying time in the city. The aforementioned Crypt Speaker told her SF constituents to "come to Chinatown" for the Lunar New Year. On the 2/29/2020 edition of the Today show, Dr. Fauci told the viewers that this virus from Wuhan was nothing to worry about. Just a couple of inconvenient truths before the shit hit the fan.

Not to sound like Tim Pool, but the COVID shots were shit-tests.
I recall Pool getting into a spate with someone who had brought up more or less the same point I'm bringing up here, with one of the implications being that it's easy to make these kinds of declarations-- and even taking actions corresponding to said declarations-- when other people such as your family won't directly suffer from them.
For those of you who claim you would have resisted against Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia, if you wore the mask you know the truth about yourself now. Much to reflect on.
Don't know about you, but I was wearing masks that would have theoretically worked (N95s and half-mask respirators with P100s) while butting heads with my family about wearing "less awkward" (i.e. cloth) masks. My perspective is a bit different.

I saw people complying, but not in a serious way. They were donning and doffing cloth masks anyhow, without any regard for the fact that they were handling what they logically made a fomite that potentially caught SARS-CoV-2 virions. They were wearing KN95s without any regard for authenticity (China was selling literal dust masks to us and calling them KN95s), and again, without any regard to how they were donning/doffing the masks. It wasn't uncommon for people that weren't wearing N95s to wear their mask but not cover their noses with it. They would hang masks under their chin to speak more clearly instead of doffing them entirely, or they'd hang them on their ears.

I was being told by a doctor, and by a nurse, that somehow-- somehow-- cloth masks were about as effective as N95s, even when the government posed wearing cloth masks as something to be done in the shortage of N95s as an act of altruism to potentially protect the other from you instead of protecting both parties. They could only appeal to people saying that they were, even if you pointed out that it made no sense given historic practice, the practice in their own workplaces, the design of an N95, or anything else that wasn't "but the government said it was effective".

Even most of the people insistent on following the mandate, weren't obeying in the long term as though they were seriously weighing "the science" being doled out. Yet, they still acted as if they were. They still talked down to you as if they were, too.

Jack Murphy, known lolcow: https://kiwifarms.net/threads/jack-...beard1000-jacked-brunch-liminal-order.108425/
They were arguing about Murphy letting his kid get the shot so he could play baseball, or something like that.

This was the point when, seeing that things were not going to be allowed to be "normal" any time soon and remembering my loved ones who suffered and died in a couple countries to practice the faith when it was suppressed by the authorities, I started hosting a bible fellowship in my home.

If I had been turned in, I was prepared to take the rap entirely by myself. My friends were told that if there was a knock on the front door, they should head out the back and go home.

We did not even tell our own religious leaders what we were doing, because they had shown that they were all too compliant and it might not be a prudent thing to disclose.

It was another year and a half before they started letting people so much as have donuts and coffee again in the church hall.

I am not going to say "sorry this was as much my fault as yours." I resisted this with all my might. In other ways too, but I don't want to talk about it.

Mild inconvenience over a dumb fucking useless dress code is nowhere near the level of shit as supporting gulags and camps where people got culled en masse, those two things aren't even remotely similar lmao.
I heavily disagree. Those who wore the masks and took the jab kneeled as their personal freedoms were trampled. They made it harder for those of us with backbones who actually stood up for ourselves, and for you. Don’t make excuses in hindsight for your or others weakness. I put my livelihood on the line, told my employer, and my government to fuck themselves. And I COULDNT afford to lose my job. Luckily they rolled over when I said no. Many weren’t as lucky. Don’t pretend anyone who complied didn’t actively make it harder for me and others to deny them their tyranny. Fuck that.

The saddest part is there could be an identical pandemic tomorrow and the same people asking for forgiveness for ruining literally everyone on the planet's lives for 2 and a half years and dismissing people who turned out being right as "anti science bigots" would make the exact same decisions again because they didn't actually learn anything.

They're just saying this to cover their ass and not face consequences for their heinous actions.

On a completely different note, I can easily imagine this happening again.

What with transgenderism, and the medical industrial complex that pushed it on children and mentally incompetent adults.

Causing a massive wave of worsening mental illness, sexual dysfunction and degeneracy, despair, and suicide. And persecuting, even jailing, anyone who stood up to the mad scientists inflicting all of this pain and suffering on the most vulnerable in society both for huge stacks of money and for shits and giggles.

"We didn't know! The science said that genital mutilation and poisonous wrong-sex hormones was the best way to treat gender dysphoria! Please forgive us!"

Really?

Because it's not much of a step.

I mean, you just lose your job, your home, can't eat, have no money, the state takes away your kids, and you're wandering the streets and homeless.

True. Not the same as gulags.

At least with gulags the fucking Commies were honest and showed up with guns.

But we can disagree here and be fine.

Neither am I.

Some people that I respected I now have to keep from spitting when I see them on the street and I've walked away from when they've tried to speak with me like we're still friends.

That's when I knew that it was all bullshit, all theater.

That's when I knew I'd been right all along.

If Congress would go into sessions just wearing cheap ass paper masks and kneel on the floor wearing African scarves to give tribute to a drug addicted home invader, it was a nothing burger.
