Despite liking some parts of FF and Disney a lot I've always found KH a bit too cringy for comfort, and most of my enjoyment regarding it comes from watching the funni bois at Oneyplays go through it. That being said, the battle mechanics and set pieces look really neat. The more advanced combo system and the way you can combine spells with your meelee attacks could be tons of fun. I kinda want to at least try out how fighting in it feels.

KH2 is amazing in that regard, and other than the combos looking kind of floaty but not nearly as bad as DDD/BBS, the combat in KH3 looks great and seems to give you a lot of options. The thing with KH is that you kind of have to just let the story go where it wants. I had to grapple with that when they introduced time travel.

also OneyPlays' KH playthroughs are some of their best they've ever done, just because KH works surprisingly well with their style of humor

Sounds good! I don't mind a bit of floatiness if it helps with extending mid-air juggles. Despite more earlier complaints I'd lie if I'd say I didn't get at least a little endeared to the franchise thanks to Oney and co. Not gonna lie, I'm a smidge salty their KH2 playthrough is at a hiatus right now.

Yeah, sometimes all a plot needs to do is give place for the characters to do awesome\crazy things, kind of like the story modes of the last few Netherrealm games.

This is a really in-depth video by a prominent KH speedrunner about his impressions on the game, and it's pretty interesting. He also has a lot of valid ideas and critique towards what he got to see. The biggest issue with the floaty and flashy combos is that they're low on iframes, so where you kind of have Sora flailing about doing cool shit, you can still get hit.

Okay, so we got a MASSIVE amount of info released over the past few days at E3.

First off, two new trailers were shown during the Xbox conference and Sony conference (three if you count the one shown during SE's presentation that was basically the Xbox video with some scenes from the Orchestra trailer). The first revealed that Frozen is going to appear as a world (and let us be honest here, who didn't expect it? The leaks that spoiled Monsters Inc. also had concept art for a Frozen world) and also revealed a VERY spoilerific scene involving Aqua along with Larxene returning. The second/third one revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean is returning to the series (apparently using At World's End as the ) with the main trio in pirate attire and somehow managing to look less out-of-place than they did in KH2, Luxord returning, and other scenes.

Second off, various editions of KH3 are now available for preorder. There's the usual base game, A deluxe version (featuring a steelbook case, an art book, and an official Disney Trading Pin) for $79.99 USD that will be available at all retailers, a digital "all-in-one" edition that includes the two PS4 remasters and 3 along with some extra digital goodies (which includes a cosmetic variant of the Star Seeker Keyblade themed after the PS4 or Xbox One depending on the edition picked up), a Square Enix Store-exclusive bundle for a whopping $229.99 USD that includes the Deluxe Edition and three Bring Arts Kai figures that features the main trio in their Toy forms. Japan is also getting a few bonuses as well, including a limited-edition PS4 Pro themed around KH3 that also includes the game.

And finally, here are the trailers.

Why are their Organization Thirteen members in the trailers? Aren't they all dead as of Kingdom Hearts 2/Chain of Memories?

they came back through time travel
That's only true for Xehanort's Heartless, Xemnas, and Young Xehanort. In the case of the old Organization XIII members they came back because their Nobodies were defeated back in Chain of Memories or Kingdom Hearts 2 and became whole again as a result of that.

so they're human again, but still evil?

Yep, they're a part of the 13 Darknesses that Xehanort is building up for the final battle. It should also be mentioned that Xehanort is also putting pieces of his own heart into him which is why their eyes are yellowish-gold now.

The SE trailer also revealed a Ratatouille scene.

I've seen people comment about the character models and that the look of them is kind of jarring. Most people don't realize that every Kingdom Hearts game prior to 3 relied mostly on textures to convey depth in faces and models instead of shaders. Replaying the games now I really notice how flatly they're all lit, SE was just always good at using that to their advantage.

I really want to buy this game on launch but I recently decided to stop giving any money to Disney. Should I cave and give cheddar to the mouse overlord or just wait until I can buy it second hand from CEX or something?

I can't stand the wait! I've been playing KH2 Final Mix over and over and... I want something new!

I tried searching for "games like Kingdom Hearts" and... what a clusterfuck of stupidity. Like most of the recommendations aren't even remotely like Kingdom Hearts... at all.

So I'm wondering, does anyone around here know of any games like KH? Not really story wise though, I mean, to be honest I skip over all the cut scenes, I just really like the battle mechanics, the questing stuff (puzzle pieces, synthesis, etc) and the general look/feel.

I looked over some of the recommendations on other sites that were vaguely similar, but a lot of them looked... gritty, like too realistic. And then others looked too cartoonish. KH has that sort of in between look about it, it's clean, but not too cartoony.

You'd think, given the success of the franchise there would be copycats lining up left and right, but that doesn't seem to be the case for some reason.

Nobody is talking about AngryJoe getting publicly lynched on his twitter by KH fans daring him not to review KH3 unless he played all the titles first? (He also made his impressions about it btw)

The only ones I know, own and are coming "somewhat" close to Kingdom Hearts are Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and Final Fantasy 15. Both are made by Square Enix, especially Final Fantasy 15 made by the KH team. You definitly could heard of both of them, but yet one of them is what you stated as gritty and both are realistic or in combat aesthtics not as fast-paced and challenging like KH2 FM.

For KH itself it had a queit late success or rather was more silent than any other game in the market. To find a copycat game is really hard because mixing Disney and Anime with 3rd person hack and slash combat was a pretty unique idea and actually nobody came to the mind to make an own take to a KH-esque game title. I think it was probably due to SE's marketing decision of the series by jumping to the next free console for every sequel or prequel, making it harder to follow or notice the games for people to investigate and also spending money for a new console always instead of staying at one or two consoles, which is now the case with KH 2.8 HD Remix and Kingdom Hearts 3 soon. And don't forgot that the story got more convoluted and mysterious after each game, it turned off enough people to leave. Also, it let the KH games seem detached, indirect and hidden in the meta but still got beloved only by fans in a more secret space. Just a thought of mine, of course.
If there is nothing KH-like out there, then I think you should wait for KH3, play the other titles and the other FM titles (yes even Birth by Sleep lol) or just continue beating the Data fights and Lingering Will over and over.

Yeah I might try one of the newer Final Fantasy games. To be honest I kind of just... gave up on the FF series after around... 10... or 10-2 or... I don't even know. I think it was around the time they started trying to make MMO versions and the entire concept of engaging/interesting characters sorta fell out the window.

The whole mashup idea I don't even really care about, like I said, I could skip the cut scenes entirely and just outright ignore the story, it's the general game mechanics and design that interest me. Especially of KH2 (the first one was more heavily centered on jump quests as a means of progression, rather than as a means of side questing).

I think the only thing I've played that comes close, outside of the Zelda franchise and the two Mega Man Legends games (both of which have terrible jump mechanics) was Dawn of Mana... which was boring with an irritating color scheme. Sort of like comparing Blue Dragon Awakened Shadow to MM Legends, the former being tedious watered down repetition compared to the later.

Birth By Sleep was a decent prequel, some parts I didn't like as much as KH2, but at least it had the same general game play mechanics and style. They took out the Gummi Ship stuff though which was pretty disappointing and the sticker system was a more boring version of the puzzle system. The board game thing was kind of fun though, as was the battle arena thing. BBS felt really short though and playing as the three different characters, even though they have slightly differing maps, just feels like replays of a very short game.

I kind of wish they had made a proper version of Chain of Memories, basically strip out the goofy card game mechanics and put in a proper KH combat system... but even then it'd probably just wind up playing like KH 358/2 Days or Re:Coded.

Probably I'll wind sticking with code hacking KH2 for more playability to tide myself over until next January.

Seems kind of dumb all around. Kingdom Hearts 3 doesn't really need a "review" in the first place and the only real reason most people would even be looking for one is to try and see some more game play footage before its official release. Most of which has been pretty incomplete and misleading from what I've seen so far. Like the trailers where they show six or eight of the new summons all within the span of about 20 seconds, that's some pretty misleading game play I think. Also kind of stupid because it'll make people unfamiliar with the franchise think that it looks too busy/messy.

I see that nothing is going on here for a long time, so let me give you a recap of news that this thread was missing out on (Warning: Late content, maybe personally already-known content or could be just wrong delivered):

-We have only 2 months before Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out and Square Enix are spamming most of the new trailers with the same song from Utatda or previously known OSTs, and spoilers more new scenes and worlds. Featured Worlds are: The 100 Acre Wood, an extended look into the Kingdom of Corona, San Fransokyo and snippets of the Keyblade Graveyard.

- The official Box-art for Kingdom Hearts 3 was revealed

- Tetsuya Nomura announced that 3 more trailers will come before release on the 10th,18th and 21st of December.

- A new Collection was announced called the "Kingdom Hearts - The Story So Far Compilation" for US only on the Playstation 4. (Its just all the HD Remix games bundled in one)

- TL;DR version: Amazon announced to reveal some world-new KH3 coverage to bait the KH fans into one place and tried to sell stuff to them.
Some low-key Kingdom Hearts "Drama" was occurred. Amazon was putting out a live stream, last week Friday on Twitch; announcing a Announcement....(yeah) for a "World Premiere" new unseen Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer on Monday, 26 November. Well, it turned out to be just a shorter cut of the "Together" trailer and delivered a screenshot of the exclusive Amazon DLC Keyblade called: "Dawn till Dusk"(which originally was already discovered by the fans on E3 of this year) and only serves as a official affirmation of the Keyblade's existence for the US markets.

The whole stream literally was there to watch their ads, presenting other video games offers and deliver gameplay for over 10 minutes, while in that time the Twitch chat went totally nuts for the KH stuff.

Overall, it let fans left pretty dissapointed.

After this, Amazon had responded on Twitter with a vague tweet to damage control the situation they put themselfs into because the actual new trailer "disappeared":

It was sure a good day to be a Kingdom Hearts fan, I guess.

For me personally after all this, I still left confused that this game still got no coverage for the Xbox users. I sure have a PS4 but Square are marketing their new game heavily for newcomers on the Xbox One. It kinda shows that Square Enix use the same marketing strategy like Final Fantasy 15's but did they never thought that the predecssor titles could be also intresting for people owning one, especially with KH3 coming closer to release?
They had everysingle game on nearly every console possible before, having a shit load of Remix games on PS3 and PS4 and putting a complete edition again on the PS4, and Xbox got nothing? That is pretty anti-consumer though...
