Disagree. I dont like some gameplay decisions and the standard enemy design, but I thought DDD was great for how it mind fucked sora for a bit and gave Riku more time to shine.
The problem with DDD for me is it is arguably the true start to the absolute insanity that KH would become, their is a reason this script is made fun of so much. It set ups so many bad ideas imo, the nobody twist, the Org 13 twist, the time travel, "Half Xehanort, it hints at Roxas coming back instead of just being dead, etc. Some people have argued with me saying the nobody twist about them having hearts was in KH2 but even if I agree with that it sucks anyway. Nobodies were more interesting when they pretended to have emotions and hearts as it made them tragic, yet it was hopeful enough because when they went they had a chance to be whole again like Roxas did.

Riku to me works better when he's more introspective and looks within himself more like in CoM/KH2, and he still had room to look within himself and figure out where he fits in during this whole light and darkness battle, when he's just Sora's baby sitter he isn't nearly as interesting. He's better when the story is about him more then his relationship with Sora. Sora gets mindfucked, but the reasons why and for what suck so hard for me that I just don't care plus it felt like a little too much of a retread through CoM.

CoM has some off the wall shit, "to lose is to gain, and to gain is to lose", but DDD is way worse and their was much less to ruin in CoM then DDD so DDD dropping the ball messes up more so to me its worse.
Yeah im with you on this one. I like the cast a fair amount and enjoyed how they finally got a big badass fight in remind, but sora sucked the oxygen out of the room. Nobody really can take the spotlight from sora it seems unless they are in a side game. I dont mind that much because I like the kid, but they really need to be better at giving other characters some moments to shine.
I think that Remind fight sucks as a story moment, it feels so...forced, it feels like a weird apology for no one except Sora doing anything in the base game then a natural plot element (I felt that from Remind a lot tbh), and the dialogue is so damn awkward (in the dub anyway) especially with Ventus and Roxas. So it falls flat to me.

Also Terra sounds like he literally phoned his lines in through a Discord call which kills my mood so much. Terra may not be my favorite character at all, but he should have some kind of redemption moment and he just gets absolutely fuck all besides jobbing in Remind as Lingering Will. Terra like the entire BBS cast got absolutely robbed in KH3, which is why I retroactively dislike BBS even more then I already did 10 years ago after my initial playthroughs were over.
I cannot stress enough how badly 14's failure fucked over the company. It was bad man, Square almost went under and EVERYONE got pulled from whatever they were doing and sent to tame that trashfire. Nomura's team practically went from 100 to 0 overnight. It may sound like an excuse because its been said so many times, but check out the various docu drama's on youtube, its fascinating how badly they fucked it up. You couldn't even run the dam thing at launch because they decided to give potted plants every pixel in the game.
Considering I know someone who played 1.0, and could actually run it, and I've been playing FF14 since 2.0's launch and still play to this day (I have a bunch of autistic posts in that game's kiwi thread to prove my MMO autism). I know full well how badly FFXIV 1.0 fucked everything for SE. What I question is how much of KH's fuck ups are truly beyond Nomura's control?

Xion doesn't need to exist to make Days a spin off game, all the stupid shit in DDD doesn't need to exist, and ultimately it doesn't change that most of KH3 is filler as fuck and could have been better used to make this large cast actually do something. If you fixed even one of these issues, or just all three, KH3 wouldn't have been such a disappointment.

Him losing Versus and everything to do with FFXV though was likely the fault of FFXIV's failure though, due to the very hands on deck approach they took to get FFXIV 2.0 out as fast as they did. That is unquestionably SE as a companies' fault due to its engine autism during the PS3 era. I just am not fully convinced that all the spin off's problems and eventually KH3's problems with it, are wholly at fault there beyond that "we needed to make a bunch of shitty spin offs".

Also they could just not make the spin offs all canon, that'd probably also help a lot.

is the best chick of the franchise.
This is a very low standard if we're being honest. KH has a pretty bad female cast for a JRPG, and this isn't even some "muh wamen" sexism spergy, JRPGs for the last what 20 or so years usually get at least one good to solid female party member, yet KH has at best an okay female character as Aqua's resolution is so terrible that I thought she was better before KH3 even happened. If her story ended in 0.2, she'd be a better character which is incredibly sad.

Also Xehanort's motivations feel contradictory with KH3's developments, and I preferred his BBS motivations because they felt more in line with Riku's character development that also gets shat on or just ignored later.
It's not that his motivations were contradictory, it's just that they were bare bones and then expanded upon massively with no prior buildup.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I'm pretty sure Xehanort's only motivation for the entirety of the series was "Summon kingdom hearts and see what it does". The entire spiel about "Wanting to lead" didn't have a single ounce of foreshadowing before it was pathetically explained to the player at the last possible second.

Xehanort basically believed that Darkness was fine and the hate for it was overblown, it is why he used it and tempted Terra to use it. The fundamental disagreement he and Eraqus had was in regards to the topic of Darkness because Eraqus is an extremely old fashioned "Light good, Darkness bad" sort of guy. Xehanort is basically a scientist who wanted to experiment with taboo stuff, same way Ansem the Wise wanted to experiment with hearts.

So him going "Darkness bad, I must stop it" at the last second is absolutely idiotic. The most charitable answer to why he does this is "I just lied to literally everyone because of my convoluted plan said me lying is the best idea. Darkness" which at this point, you've just tricked the audience for the last 10 years for fucking nothing.

Too long to directly reply so ill just lay it down.

I loved the twist that organization 13 did have hearts, because it made 2 so much much darker. Sora basically murdered a bunch of living breathing people (temporarily.) thinking they were just soulless automatons. Plus I remember not buying it to begin with when I played 2. Axel was just too dam emotional and active for me to buy that he couldn't feel anything, the same goes for most of the other members as well so I was pretty happy my pet theory was right. Nomura's the kind of guy to lay breadcrumbs for shit later on, so I can totally buy him planning this out.

I loved the idea of a new organization. I remember being disappointed most of the members are from the original, but I thought it was pretty badass to bring back the black and will happily jump aboard anytime they do. It was odd how they made a big deal about xehanort possessing everybody, then they dropped that like a rock come 3, I was disappointed they didn't make everybody have pointy ears and white hair.

And I fucking loved the time travel. All the other portable games were hinting at a complex plan for xehanort to come back and it seemed like the most logical explanation for how the hell this guy could plan so dam far ahead. Now I will agree HOW he time travels is needlessly convoluted, but otherwise I thought it was pretty dam cool.

I really liked the idea that the organization hijacked the exam, and sora's just going along the path they set, naive and acting like a kid at a candy store because its all a "test" and then he gets his hopes and dreams smashed by one mind fuck after another. The explanations for how and why these mindfucks happen didnt really bother me, because the whole game is set in a dream inception style. I do confess that it was a little annoying how nothing in Riku or sora's path's seemed to line up till the end but it was an inspired choice.

I thought Riku was enough of a leading man in DDD that I serioulsy though he'd be the main character in the next one for a good amount of time, dont remember him being that bad.

The one time I felt the dialogue was bad and forced, was when Mickey somehow telepathically communicates with sora.... while he's standing right in front of him. That bugged the shit out of me.

See I really enjoyed the spinoff plot's, but I feel like Nomura was just too burned out and distracted after 2010 to make this shit work properly. I imagine he had a plan, but after 14, there came the Phone games, the 3ds Dream drop and the remasters, which were likely pumped out to make a quick buck. I dont believe 14 is the main reason why Nomura had problems. Im fairly certain there was a lot of background backstabbing. Especially when it comes to Versus becoming 15. The circumstances behind Hajime Tabata's departure from the company are very suspect, especially considering he hasn't headlined a new game in over 5 years.

Kairi is the biggest letdown of the franchise, I appreciate the steps he's taken with her in remind and giving her more focus, but she really needed to do more.

It gets worse when you factor in the journal's he wrote. I remember them being somewhat contradictory.

I'm just touching on your first bit because its the thing I mostly care about. This post will be autistic enough as-is.

I hate this idea of how the nobodies work because I found the idea that they were remembering what having hearts was like, what emotions was like, this whole idea that they can remember all of what they were actually aren't, more compelling and interesting then "actually they just regrow or whatever lol". That is more dark and fucked to me then anything you said. That is the 2nd most cruel thing after Roxas getting yeeted and being tricked to believe he had a real life with real friends and he's actually fated to just disappear and lose anything he could have had.

Let's put this another way using Axel as an example.

Axel has all these emotions, all these feelings, everything he feels for Roxas (and I guess Xion) is because he is going off his memories of having feelings, what he knows about himself and what he was like. But, he can't move forward, his emotions don't evolve, they just are because he has no real heart and any ties he makes are feeble and nothing compared to a real heart. Anything he does now is effectively for nothing, because he just wants to return to his original self and anything he does as Axel is worthless. We already talked in-depth one whole game ago about how powerful memories are, why can't they let you use some sort of bizarre self suggestion to convince yourself that you are real and not some soulless beast made to be killed?

Any bonds Axel forms, any ties he makes don't really matter, so he's forming all these relationships and connections and...it just is fated to end when he returns to being Lea unless he artificially adds a heart. Tie in with CoM's themes and bam to gain is to lose and to lose is to gain. And he has to acknowledge that throughout this entire process that he's really bullshitting himself as a coping mechanism and all of this horseshit with Kingdom Hearts is just one big cope.

Meanwhile he and every other Org member has a jerkass like Sora saying he doesn't actually feel anything, when he sort of does but its really all fake bullshit and even if it hurts to admit Sora is right and his initial reaction would be to deny it, the foundational truth is that nobodies don't have hearts. Its a very weird thing to grasp and that's what I wanted Days to sort of talk about but instead we get Xion getting Roxas' character development for him.

Is this extremely convoluted, schizo as fuck, and weird? Yes, but this is Kingdom Hearts so what?

It is better then just going "actually what I said 5+ years ago was horseshit, you fucking idiots believed me lmao" and it has more going on to it considering KH was already going down a "What is real?" route with CoM and Roxas' whole story doubles down on that even more. So why not triple down by having all antagonists be fake as fuck and its just sadder this way when they go out kicking and screaming yet it was likely for the best as they can actually be whole again.

ill meet you half way and agree I like the idea that being a nobody, is fundamentally different then being a somebody. It's a little hard to define physically, but personality wise axel might as well be a different person apart from Lea. The way the original hollow bastion nobody's act when restored, basically clinches it. I just think its more interesting that they are capable of having souls and making meaningful choices, but are gaslit into thinking otherwise. and that Sora basically killed what they are to save what they were.

KINGDOM HEARTS Union X DARK ROAD Completion Commemorative Q&A
*This contains heavy spoilers for the end of the story. Be warned if you have not yet finished the game.

"KINGDOM HEARTS Union X DARK ROAD" Completion Commemorative Q&A

Q1: In previous titles, we saw the Xehanort who leaves Destiny Islands as a young man. He seems a lot younger in DR.

A1:
DR presents the correct version. For previous games, we used the young man model we already had as a catch-all symbolic representation of "his youth," in order to save cost modeling a young boy version. In KHIII, they were specifically split. I'd like you to interpret it as the symbolic representation becoming a rich one.

Q2: Will there be any fix patches?

A2:
Yes. We've discovered some bugs, such as the battle backgrounds displaying the wrong background, and there are a few lines of dialogue fixed at the last minute to be replaced - these will be addressed in an upcoming patch called version 5.0.1. I am very sorry. Also, there are scenes where an easily understood form of the Player is shown in Xehanort's final battle and final reflections, but as it could be misinterpreted in a way I didn't intend, we will be updating how it is represented sometime next month too.

Q3: You said the mystery of why Xehanort went bald would be answered, but it ended up being unexpectedly straightforward.

A3:
Yes, it wasn't really a very important issue, after all. It's just that people were wrongly theorizing that it fell out after many years, so I wanted to correct the record that he shaved it. It also wasn't important that the Queen of Hearts didn't remember Xehanort. That's just how she is.

O4: Several Emblem Heartless appeared in the worlds of DR. Timeline-wise, Emblem Heartless weren't first created until after KH, right?

A4:
The reason Emblem Heartless appear in worlds of the past is an important part of the setting of "Missing-Link," so it will be explained in the future.

Q5: Who is the blue robed figure who appears in the DR epilogue?

A5:
Someone who bears the heart of the Player from UX. Later the part where it talks about a "second life" will be withdrawn. And then, it will be about how after its final destruction, that heart will once again melt into the heart of another person.

Q6: Places called Scala ad Caelum appear in both DR and Missing-Link. Is it the same place?

A6:
It is the same place. It looks different because it is a different time period: as per the "multi-tiered city" label, the city is structured in tiers, where new districts are built on top of the old ones.

Q7: The story didn't go so far as to show when Xehanort becomes completely devoted to the darkness. What of this?

A7:
That's true. But, I feel I showed the circumstances that led him to the start of that dark road. I also got to do the part I wanted to show the most: the relationship between him and Eraqus. So, I think it's possible to guess what happened from there.

Q8: There were a lot of interesting characters among his classmates and upperclassmen. Can we look forward to seeing them again?

A8:
There were a lot of characters which I am sad to restrict to one game, and characters who made their exits without getting to do much talking, which I was disappointed about. But, as mentioned above, I wasn't able to go deeper due to issues regarding size limitations. I feel very sorry about this. I think it would be very difficult for most of the characters to appear again in a future game. But, there are some possibilities. I've also thought it could be good content to touch on in a book or something.

Q9: What did Master Odin mean at the end when he spoke of a "teacher" and a "cruel fate"?

A9:
Master Odin himself once had a master who taught him, naturally. His master entrusted him with a certain duty - parts of this align with that of the blue robed figure. This will be revealed in detail in Missing-Link, which depicts a later period.

O10: Xehanort's motherly figure looked a lot like Skuld. Is it her?

A10:
No, but she is connected to Skuld. Missing-Link is also a story about bloodlines, you see.

Q11: In this game, we learned about Xehanort's bloodline. What about Eraqus? Previously we learned he is descended from the very first master. Do the two share lineage?

A11:
Sorry, but this is also a Missing-Link topic. I will say they don't have the same parents.

Q12: When can we next expect news on Missing-Link?

A12:
CBT (Closed Beta Testing) is first, we are currently making preparations. I have to balance the time-frames of other titles, but first of all, we do plan to revive the KINGDOM HEARTS Union x Twitter account as a Missing-Link account, so please make sure to follow.

Q13: Lastly, will Xehanort appear again in a future title?

A13:
The Dark Seeker Saga, which hinged on Xehanort, is now over. However, this doesn't have bearing on whether he will or won't appear. At this point, it's up to whether there's a good opportunity.

—Thank you.

So we're going to be dealing with bloodlines now?

We never see xehanort shave and he only gets his hair back after taking over terra's body and becoming terranort/xehanort/ansem seeker of darkness. I'm calling bullshit on the shaving thing he never shaved it off after he got it back.

I just want them to start over with a new story in the same universe or something, fuck Xehanort, fuck the bloodlines, fuck time travel, fuck whatever the hell was told through Union X and Dark Road

So I got bored and my husband got a copy rather recently, so I started my hand at it as I never had a PlayStation growing up, so I never got to play it when I wanted to. I probably would've taken to it better as a kid for sure tbh. Stopped at Traverse Town to take a break, I had fallen to the Heartless boss or whatever it is twice and had to grind to level 6 for a shot at beating him quick.

Quick question, I went with Mystic and exchanged Guardian, how fucked am I?

Oh, and fuck this camera, I can't control it even manually. Is this an actual problem with the game or am I being stupid with a controller I have little familiarity with?

You're gonna be a little fucked until you start unlocking spells but you get your first at the end of Traverse Town.
So I take it there could've been a worse choice. Now I don't know if winning my play-fighting with Riku and the other kid would've made any real difference (I didn't win anything) before the main story began.

KHuX & Dark Road reduced the Neyblade War into a fucking communication problem.

Nomura even tried to justify the War due to "darkness would kill them all either way"

What you're asking for is "start over but bring that Naruto editor in to tardwrangle Nomura"

you can grind for potions and level up if you win, but your not missing too much. Personally my approach was to take the sword and discard the wand. I was never much of a magic guy besides using cure.

Blizzard and Fire have their uses. Blizzard especially since its a nice shotgun blast that goes well with an aggressive melee style.
