Actually this isn't really up my alley whatsoever. It honestly feels like it was designed for phones rather than just ported to them, with the auto battle and speed up functions (hot tip devs: if you need to include a function that makes your battle system not an unbearable slog, mayhaps rethink your base system).

Any obscure as fuck JRPG titles I may have missed from the SNES-PS2 era? I've played most of the usual suspects. If it's made by Square, Enix, Atlus, or whatever the fuck the Sega devs were with Phantasy Star and Shining Force I've probably played it, (including JP only releases like Bahamut Lagoon)

Emerald Dragon? PC-Engine version just got fan translated.

Metal Max Returns?

I'd search for recently fan-translated games. Personal recs would be:
Linda Cubed Again (PS1) - Fucked up rendition of Pokemon/Noah's Ark designed by one of the character designers of Akira. You and a girl must collect a select number of species of monster, hijinks ensues. It's best to know as little about this game as possbile when going in, it's a ride.

(the best version) of Grandia 1 (Saturn) - The most beautiful version of an already pretty game. Arguably the prettiest game on the console.

Community Pom (PS1) - Zelda-like with a cute aesthetic and a fun sense of humor.

Racing Lagoon (PS1) - I've talked about this game in the thread before but it's probably the second best Square Soft game on the PS1 next to Xenogears. It's Armored Core mixed with Ridge Racer mixed with Final Fantasy 7 with the best soundtrack on the console. It's a pure masterpiece even if Lagoon語 is something that literally cannot be translated.

Tales of Rebirth (PS2) and Tales of Destiny (PS2) - I sound like a broken record but I can't help but shill these PS2 Tales Of games enough. 2D Tales of combat was so much fun and other than Narikiri Dungeon X (also fun game but not in English yet), they literally never returned to the battle systems set here ever again. Fuck Bandai Namco.

Sakura Wars 1 & 2 (Saturn) - I haven't played these games YET but they're long awaited SRPGs that finally got translated sometime in 2020 and 2025 respectively.

Princess Crown (Saturn) - Also recently got translated. I haven't gotten around to finishing it yet either but it's a Vanillaware game for the Saturn and the gameplay was pretty tight from what I played of it.

Baroque (Saturn) - Good dungeon crawler with a great aesthetic and cryptic story. I'd recommend following a guide to getting the true ending after exploring on your own for a bit.

Planet Laika (PS1) - It's Solaris with Dog people. I'd argue that this isn't REALLY a JRPG as the combat is literally pong but it's unique enough where I'll count it.

I replayed Star Ocean 3 just a few weeks ago. I now appreciate its story than I was when I was young and retarded. the delivery sucks, but I like the message of god and religion.

But fuck tri-ace introducing battle trophies. it was fucking infuriating to get a lot of those trophies. 300 unbroken chains, battle lasts 1 hour no hit no damage and 1 minute kill bosses? fuck that, thank god for emulators, I am amazed that i have the autism back then to get those trophies. and it gets worse with star ocean 4 since getting max stats needs you to get those battle trophies and its per character too

I finally finished the Tales of Vesperia remaster. Pretty meh game.
I like Vesperia but it's absolutely one of those games carried by doing a second playthrough with NG+ now that you have all of your tools available. Graces is better imo.

Somehow I had 0 Grade at the end, so New Game + had no bonuses.

Damn that sucks. If you're on PC I'd just cheat engine the grade in for artes and what not but if you're on console you're beat.

Honestly, I just deleted it from my PS5 and am on to the next RPG in my backlog, Valkyria Chronicle Remastered.

I originally got Valkyria Chronicle on PS3 near launch, but my original PS3 got the YLOD and I lost my save. Loved the game, never got back to where I was, then got the Remaster in a killer Humble Bundle for PS4. (Anyone else miss the fuck out of the console Humble Bundles?)

I’m on Chapter 10, Part 5 and abusing the skirmish grind to get my troops pumped up, already have Scouts and Engineers at 20.

Star Ocean 3
God damn I loved that game so much as a kid, even found a way to get 100% map completion on the first area so I can buy the overpowered weapons in the first city. Also learned that you can kill everything infinitely chaining the main characters kick attacks. Noel may very well been my first waifu.

I don't remember the game needing grinding that much. I recommend to eventually play 3 because it's the best the series ever gotten. 2 is also underrated. I really disliked 4 for being a step back in gameplay so they can redo 1's plot.
Linda Cubed Again (PS1)
I should play it eventually, I show some youtube video on it but so much shit happens that I don't remember anything.

Tales of Obtuse, Missable Horseshit more like

As much as I like mid-2000s Tales of, the amount of stupid shit you could miss in those games even if you were really careful is kinda bonkers.

For me, it's Maria. I already like kinda tsuntsun, dark-haired girls but also in English she had the same VA as Meryl from Trigun and Kaoru from Kenshin so that overwhelmed my teenage brain.

I am no currently playing Phantasy Star Universe: EP2. a lot of people didnt like it, but it was my jam, i spent around 1000+ hours offline just doing offline missions to level up to around 200+ its a shame that the EP3 and EP4 story are server side only

Yep, already downloaded it.
You know what? I beat the first boss in Koudelka, and I think that's enough for now. Fixed camera angles and one of the worst battle systems I've seen. Plus, you don't unlock the ability to save until after said boss, and I still haven't unlocked the map, so I have no idea where I'm supposed to go next.

Edit: Played a bit more. Apparently your weapons can also break (which happened to the two best weapons I found), and hitting an enemy with the wrong weapon will fucking heal them.

Yeah everything else about Koudelka is fantastic but jesus CHRIST that gameplay sucks.

Doublepoost but whatever , TALES OF PHANTASIA CROSS FINALLY GOT AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION. This version is a massive upgrade from the PSX version and if you are going to play this game, play THIS version. The translation team also added some QoL which is in the crosspost.

I decided to just use a code to remove random battles, give myself infinite HP and MP (for bosses and grinding), and turn on turbo mode. Without having to actually play the game, it's got a pretty good story. There were a few points where I had to use a guide because I couldn't find a specific item anywhere, but that didn't happen too often. All in all, I'd give it a 4/10. If it had a regular battle system, it'd be an easy 8/10. Just watch a let's play.
