I think they mean in the sense that Xenogears gets excused and praised for "what it could've been" most of the time and fans ignore the rushed/unfinished part. I have seen multiple people call it as "The best story ever written, shame the second half sucks".

It's also a near 30 year old game with no rerelease so it became a bit of a sacred cow within jrpg community circles and people who never touched it (like me) join in the praise.

You don't see xenosaga get this much leeway cause i had 3 very long games (it was meant to have more), and xenoblades dont get as much praise while being finished stories.

btw here is an unrelated but fun pic. There was a vote for the best JRPGs ever in the r/jrpg subreddit. They are exactly what you would expect from redditors.

It's so shit holy mother of god. Choosing best is always a shitshow, but even that is either shit taste or throwing popular titles that I can guarantee is this meme:
1767206098783.png
FFX is not bad but definitely not best in any metric (I personally would have given it to Shadow Hearts 2).
Nu FF is terrible (I would given best action to Dark Cloud 2).
I never manage to finish FFT so I'll give a pass (personal favourite tactics game is Disgaea 2).
Yakuza sidequests are now just reddit references with no real plot impact, I'd probably give best sidequests to Suikoden.... 2.
Best minigame, I still remember I really liked the one In Xenosaga 3 and Wild Arms 4.
Best Characters would go Tales of the Abyss, or Utawarerumono Mask series.
Best story... Xenogears falls to the trap that it's way better if you dig around it. But for a game with a good story I'd go with a surprise pick of either Odin Sphere or Grim Grimoire. Putting a VN is just cheating.
FF16 boss battles are just playable cutscenes, so that's a particular shit choice.
Best Soundtrack goes to any Ar Tonelico game, no question.
Chrono Trigger as best replayable is okay.
Best Indie is definitely not this shit. Astlibra Revision is way better pick.
Atlus game as underrated is just shameful. I'd put Demon Roots there because you can't get more underrated than be seen as gooner bait.
Best remake I'll pass anytime they change something is usually for the worse.
Best Retro I would put Growlanser 2, since you can't get more retro than a god tier mangaka that stopped working.
Best ongoing series, I really dislike what the Trails games turned into. I'd rather put Utawarerumono RPG games that (hopefully) will get another title this year.

It's very nostalgia goggled but at least it's not a list of current things.

I'd say this is extremely fitting since the majority of the story in-game wouldn't even have happened if 2 dudes weren't so severely thirsty for some holy maiden pussy.
It's literally true. I remember being a younger lad, finishing Xenogears, and searching around about it as you're doing now.

Imagine my naive confusion when I ran into reams and reams of fujoshi fanfiction and was like "but the game's story is literally about every man in the story's attachment to some woman or another."

Gradually, I began to hate.

I think the only remake of ANY game I'd ever shoot for is Tales of Destiny DC but a "best Remake" category is probably one of the most dire categories I've ever seen. I'm not expecting some real deep cuts from reddit of all places but having 6 Final Fantasy games sitting in the entire list doesn't particularly sit right with me.

It could work if we're speaking of remakes of pre PS1 games that add QoL and better graphics, even full on new plot in case of games like Ys 1 that couldn't have the ability for one. But with modern games you usually get marginal graphical improvement and butchered script (Persona 3, FF7).

Bah, I have played Xenogears to completion multiple times. I want to say at least three.

The storyline is not "that" good and never fucking was.
I'd say the story is good but the execution was abysmal. Also weird that the story has padding in it (welcome to the sewer level, mandatory in every PSX game) while the entire back half of the game was rushed out the door.

I'd love to know what happened during development because I have a very strong suspicion it was supposed to end at disc one (with you fighting Deus probably) and they repurposed unused assets for disc two and then just duct taped everything together.

So at a point in disc 2, everyone gets captured by Krellian and Elly has to go save them but people try to stop her from going alone to which she says this:
embrace.png embrace 2.png Embrace 3.png
So is this confirmation that Fei is like the ultimate pussy-slayer? Sure, it's put tastefully but how else am I supposed to interpret this other than, "my boyfriend's dick-game is INSANE", this isn't just me being a cookie-cutter porno-addict either. There are scenes earlier in the game where Fei and Elly basically just talk about how they make each other horny but they talk about it like Count Frollo without all the shame.
This game is all kinds of horned up but it's all dressed in flowery language so it comes off as romantic and beautiful, personally I love it and wish games did this more. I feel like people forget that sex doesn't have to be an inherently dirty thing that is purely the result of indiscriminate lust.

Has anyone been following the double kickstarter shit lately? Looks dead as fuck but someone keeps spamming this below shit in the kickstarter comments that needs a crazy amount of elaboration on

Also back in the day I played Shadow Hearts 2 and 3 and liked them. Then I tried Shadow Hearts and it blew me away man. A game that looks like a crappy PS1 game, with horrible characters, a silly (intentionally!?!) Story and a fighting system that turns every turn into a quick time event. Like did 2 and 3 do it better or was I brain rotted as a youngster thinking "OOOH YEAH ACTION IN MY RPG". Like damn what an experience, like as you level up and get new like items it lessens the punishment of the combat qte shit like they knew it didn't work.

But yeah forgive me for this rant as the PS2 was barren for games at the time (until FFX and MGS2 came out like weeks later) but damn what weird fucking shit

I've always vastly preferred SH1 over its sequels.

It's more complicated than this. You'll get to that point eventually. It has to do with who Elly is and how that entity came to be in the first place (not in this lifetime, but much further back in time).

I wrote this after beating the game, the full explanation of their relationship actually makes it worse but I didn't wanna talk about it since another dude in this thread is playing the game.
What exactly does it mean when you ask God for a, "motherly presence" and he grants you a girlfriend who is extremely hot for you?
Now I just started Xenosaga while slowly reading my way through Perfect Works.

I've been playing Dragon Quest X (finished the base game) and despite it being an MMO, it can hang with the rest of the series. If you get into it you have like 8 full length Dragon Quest games to play so that's a plus for any big DQ niggas in the thread. It also has my favorite boss theme of the series.

Just got through Chrono Cross about 20 minutes or so ago. I was already spoiled by the story some time ago, but even then I found it to be even worse having actually played it. I just don't get the point of it other than being a sequel/successor to Chrono Trigger. The sad part is, that I still think the general idea behind the game is fine on paper, but the fact that it is tied to Chrono Trigger ruins both games assuming you don't want to pretend Chrono Cross doesn't exist.

The story is a little better if you think Bal'thazar is wrong and Schala is the evil part oft he time devourer.

She has the proper motivation to want to say "Fuck everything and everyone"

I thought as well, until I got to the part that explains what happened to Lucca, Chrono and Marle. "Oh they got killed by an invasion from Porre, led by that clown with the long hair; The adventurers responsible for defeating a near omnipotent alien tyrant. Oh she died in a fire, greatest inventor ever and natural fire caster." It became clear to me that as far as Masato Kato was concerned, the whole plot was a shitpost.

Reminds me of a post about new DLC fighters announced years ahead in SF6. "(x) mains excited to finally play (x)!". Gaming has become so fucking performative, people filling their room with final fantasy figures, having played half of the first part of the remake. "Yeah I'm a great sword main! I uh, played World a few times!".

Yeah, but if she and Lavos became one in the past, then the both of them should have been eliminated by our heroes in the first game right? Like, why is Lavos even a thing here?

I'm close to the end of the Romancing Saga 2 remake and it is by far one of the best JRPGs released in such a long time. Some of the most fun I've had with them in quite a while. Super well thought out game. I'll play the original at some point too and the rest of the series but I went in on this one on a whim and got hooked right away. Very replayable as well it seems like, and while I don't think I'll do a new game or NG+ if it exists right away I can see myself easily going back to it. I do think people overhyped the difficulty and LP mechanic but I'm not finished yet so there could still be something that really tests me but playing on the Hard/Original mode is by far the way to go.

It does and it doesn't make it worse.

The Wave Existence/U-DO is not exactly "God" in the sense of an omnipotent singular ultimate creator of all things.

The thing you have to understand with a lot of Japanese material that deals with the subject of the Christian God is that they kind of willfully do not engage with the concept properly on its own merits. They usually engage with it through the polytheist lens of what I like to call "Shinto bullshit." Here, it's basically just a weird higher alien entity that's not human.

So, when the Wave Existence is asked for a "motherly presence," because it's not actually the Christian God, it does not understand what that means.

So it has to ask "well what's a mother?" And it interprets it as "a woman who loves and cares for you above all other things." It does not get that there's maternal love, sexual love, et cetera. So it simply produces an entity that really, really loves the one who made the request.

Now the thing here is that I am willing to accept the concept based on the premises of the story, and pretend that the Japanese don't have weird psychosexual cultural bullshit with moms and all that. Which is frankly more generous than they usually are with Western concepts.

pretty sure the Xeno games are all heavily gnostic, with a very slight splash of Shinto shit.
