Since I'm on the topic of the comics. I'll bring up some of my favorites:
BTW: the Marvel/Disney Alien/Predator comics are dog shit. It's like they deliberately hired the worst artists and writers to work on those books. They are garbage. Do not bother. Stick to the Dark Horse shit (I'm willing to bet the same thing applies to those Dark Horse Star Wars comics too).
Aliens:
Note: Dark Horse only licensed Aliens and not Alien or Alien 3 and so on discounting the mini series adaptations of those movies later down the road. So, all Dark Horse comics are named Aliens : blank. Same with Predator (because they only licensed the first movie).
The entire TPB volume 1 comes recommended. You get Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum (which has fantastic airbrushed art that I'll show here
And you have the theory of Alien Propagation. As I said, Female War sucks but it does have some interesting ideas.
Rogue: introduces the idea of a King Alien. Which sounds stupid on paper but give it a chance. A scientist creates a Berserker (informally called a King Alien) and the idea is to unleash this mofo inside a hive where it will kill everything it sees including the queen and destroy the hive. Fun idea.
Labyrinth: one of my absolute favorites. Very twisted and even maybe disturbing comic. Easily the most graphic Aliens comic. It focuses on a scientist who keeps the creatures in a labyrinth for tests. This is where he tests some of his theories and this is the origin of the theory that the creature uses pheromones to detect us. Bodies start appearing and the good doctor is the number one suspect. Leading to one of the most absolutely twisted excursions in the comic where we see the doctor as a young man with his family and crew being taken into a hive. If you ever had the question "What if an Alien hive doesn't have a queen? What happens?" This answers that question in the most horrifying way you could imagine. Did I hype this up enough?
Alchemy: art by Richard Corben. Very interesting comic that explores a few ideas from the scrapped Alien 3 scripts where we see the beast loose among a colony of monks that have rejected technology. Recommended just for the art:
Kidnapped: this is more schlock but it still does something different. An Alien egg has "A bunch of pink crap on it" and is rejected by a potential buyer, so the dumbass mercs stuck with this Alien egg take it to an anarchist society to sell it. Hyper gory insane comic featuring a pink Chestburster going on a massive killing spree.
Predator:
Concrete Jungle. The first comic and the direct inspiration for Predator 2. Tons of crossover and it's like reading an alternate universe version of Predator 2 where it keeps escalating and it goes even more OTT by the end.
Cold War. Predator versus Russians. They also introduce one new weapon: a giant fucking bear trap.
Race War. You REALLY can't do a comic like this one today. Very interesting premise: a Predator (armed with two gauntlets) hunts at a prison rife with racial tension. Very fun gory comic.
1718: a short comic but it goes over the origin of the flintlock pistol seen at the end of Predator 2.
Bad Blood. Insane schlock that I love. Great premise. Predators are flying by Earth transporting a prisoner. The prisoner is a criminal Predator who is also insane. Shit hits the fan and the thing escapes, killing everyone on board and partially cannibalizes them. It just so happens the ship crash lands in the forest hills of New Jersey while a bunch of mercs decide to kill some time and hunt this mofo down because the dumbass FBI can't help themselves. Plot twist: this Predator DOES NOT GIVE A SINGLE FUCK ABOUT A CODE OF HONOR. And this thing slaughters everything it fucking sees in hyper gory displays. It gets better when a cop Predator appears to fight the mofo. This is also the source of the idea in Predators (Predator 3) showing multiple races of Predators and that they do not fucking get along.
Kindred: One of my favorites. A guy's father is killed during a hunting trip and he's scarred for life by the experience. 20 years later, the same Predator comes back and this guy is working through some daddy issues. Plot twist: an active serial killer in the area learns about the Predator and worships it as a god. VERY good comic. I would call this a classic.
Hell and Hot Water: not as good but I still recommend it because of the premise. This one is set deep underwater as a special forces team hunts down the creature who is hunting obscure super predators of the deep ocean.
Hell Come A Walkin': Predator in the Civil War. That's all you need.
Captive: a one shot but worth looking at where it takes the usual premise of a corporation or government holding the Predator captive and shit hits the fan. Fun but short.
Bonus, Alien VS Predator comics that are worth a damn:
The first series.
Duel. This is the one that introduced the idea of a PredAlien hybrid.
Three World War.
Eternal. More of a Predator comic that just happens to have Aliens but it's really good. An ancient Mongolian or whateverthefuckheis guy is expelled from his village and lucks out by finding a crashed Predator ship. He uses the technology to become immortal and harvests Predator tech. Flash forward to our future and the Predator tech has been adopted by elite government assassins which attracts Predator attention. Meanwhile, the Mongolian dude has a few underlings work on the Predator ship and -surprise- Alien eggs are on board and hatch.
Edit: when it comes to the Versus comics, they're pretty much all bad. The only ones that are good are: the Judge Dredd ones. They got the writers of the Dredd comics to work on these and they're a ton of fun to read. The only other one I would recommend would be the first Batman VS Predator even though it rewrites the Predator as just an evil alien that kills anyone.
