Melancholie der Engel is a very interesting and surreal movie and I truly understand it's polarizing reviews. It's the kind of movie I have a love-hate relationship for. I love it's cinematography and music and I also think the narrative about nihilism is pretty interesting (though I struggle to get this movie to make sense to me) however this isn't a movie I'd often revisit and it is a movie that makes me really feel dead inside. I think the extreme cruelty compliments the nature of the setting very well but I hate to subject myself to it again as they're at the extreme fringes of demented. It's also extremely unfortunate the animal cruelty scenes are real. It makes it really hard to defend the film because it's this kind of action I strongly condemn (and this is coming from a person who'd rather die than give up meat). Like I mentioned before, what I do like about the film mostly makes up for what I don't like. I do have a soft spot for Avant-Garde experimental films so long as there is a reason to support it's philosophy. So I do respect the work Melancholie der Engel minus the Animal Cruelty. I actually do recommend it for extreme movie enthusiasts (unless you have an extreme aversion to animal cruelty).

I cannot extend that same respect for something like Tumbling Doll of Flesh though which is a film with very ugly pornography and gore that despite being lo-fi feels so real to me I seriously question what I am watching. Nor could I respect the Vomit Gore Trilogy or August Underground as I feel it's made to be shocking for the sake of being shocking. I've heard of Channel 309 which was considered the extreme fringes of gory pornography but I heard it was also experimental too. My opinion on pornography is that it should never be allowed in the general consensus and those who should have to privilege to see it must be extremely careful when seeing it as porn could be extremely potent in corrupting their minds (after all, it's a sin the watch pornography). However, in extremely rare occasions would a pornographic work have my respect is if the writing is so good and wasn't made to turn some horny Coomer but I still find it extremely hard to recommend these works. Channel 309 appears to be a very interesting movie to me for the sake of going down the rabbit hole but I feel experimenting with the extreme fringes of demented can be quite dangerous as it can provoke dead feeling and wicked mind. I have also seen the first MDPOPE and I mentioned I hated pretty much every single clip and I don't plan to watch the other 2. But I do respect the intentions to showcasing the extreme fringes of nihilism for the sake of research but less than 30 minutes in and I wanted it to end. Also. I absolutely admire Black Metal Veins and Orozco the Embalmer where despite it's extreme content really does serve it's purpose.

Melancholie der Engel made me lose faith with the director. The guy is fearless and has a great visual style but he's caught up in being shocking for the sake of being shocking.

I've heard of Black Metal Veins but have never seen it. I heard parts of it were staged. Orozco the Embalmer is a unique specimen: one of the most unique Mondo's to come out of the Japanese death film market.

Guess I'm on a small Bruce Campbell roll lately. Finally saw this cult classic after years of the DVD collecting dust in my shelf. It was amazing, and not at all like I was expecting. Bruce plays his role as Elvis very straight, and the film has a lot of atmosphere and grubbiness. Lots of popcorn fun.

I'm pretty sure I'm late to this but, I just heard that they're doing a prequel to the Omen. WHY? What's the prequel going to be Satan's montage of speed dating? Are they going to somehow make this woke? Will it acknowledge that Damien's mom was a jackal? I have so many more questions.

I was surprised at how not-wacky it was, took me a while to give it a chance tbh

Summary: A young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, but encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

They've already fucked up imo by hiring a first time feature director to do it. Rarely does that seem to work out.

Tim Smith (producer of Brand New Cherry Flavor) wrote it with Keith Thomas (director of The Vigil / Firestarter remake), and Ralph Ineson and Bill Nighy are in the cast. Nell Tiger Free is the lead, she was in Game of Thrones but I don't remember her at all.

Think everyone else has given you really solid recommendations so I figured I'd throw something a bit more eclectic your way, I'd suggest double checking titles I've suggested just in case they're not your speed though.
