One hit kills slappers only was fun too since it was 100% ambush based yet screen looking made you have to be really crafty about hiding your exact location (which really only works on that one snowy base map and temple due to their repeated textures).
I'm still waiting for a game newer than Payday to bring back ramping mission objectives. Of all the things Goldeneye did the idea of having expansive maps where you're forced to visit more and more of them as the difficulty increases was a personal favorite of mine.
The 'problem' with Goldeneye is that it was a pioneer in its genre, like Ocarina of Time or Mario64. These games broke new ground, set new standards, and at the time were absolutely mind blowing. Two decades on the techniques, gameplay, presentation, etc have all advanced further and been much refined and polished - everything from the latest COD to Perfect Dark benefitted from Goldeneye's bold exploration of the genre. Unless you have a grasp of the history of game development to see how Goldeneye laid the foundation for every modern 3D shooter it can looks pretty clumsy and crude from a current year perspective.
