I began playing this game for the first time in years, and it's still a blast despite being over 18 years old.

Is there anyone else here who still enjoys playing it or has any fun memories associated with it?

The kids have the N64, and took Goldeneye with them, so I wish I had it again sometimes. I absolutely loved the game. I remember how difficult it was getting 007 difficulty, and I was so proud of that accomplishment. I played a little on emulator a few years back, and I have to be very honest - it did not age very well in my opinion.

Perfect Dark has aged better IMO. I mainly keep the game for Nostalgic reasons.

I've probably re-bought it about 3 times because I kept losing it, but since its so hard to find legally, I just needed to keep it forever.

That's actually one of the big classics of the N64 I don't own but my brother bought the Wii version. Is it worse?

I can definitely agree on that. The XBLA remake of Perfect Dark is also pretty decent besides triggering fanboys with mild cosmetic redesigns that I haven't really given a fuck about.

Is the wii version a shitty version of the n64 game I mean
I've never played the that version, but I have played the one for the Xbox 360, which I can assume is similar to the Wii version. While not terrible, it was nowhere near as good as the n64 version.

It's thanksgiving 1997, a cousin of mine brought a N64 to my aunt and uncle's house along with Goldeneye, Doom 64 and Shadow of The Empire, all of which was my introduction to 3D gaming.

Sadly I never played any more of Goldeneye than what I briefly played that day, but I was a huge fan of Timesplitters 2 and 3.

An XBLA version of the game got leaked.

Never became a thing because licensing rights.
Is there a way to play it or is it just video?

For now it’s just footage, but the YouTube channel it was on said that it *may* get released/leaked this year. I just hope I can download it before it inevitably gets DCMA’d.

This and Bomberman 64 were the two games perpetually shuffled into and out of my n64 during sleepovers in gradeschool. Proximity mines as the primary on facility or temple is great fun due to the ongoing mind games of distracting the others while you set your trap and then attempting to herd them into it with the starter pistol.

The ultimate asshole move for this relies on knowing how the game handles ammo crates. You can knock em around with pistols and they're the one mobile object mines will stick to. Collecting one doesn't despawn it, it just sends it off to the void out of bounds somewhere for a few minutes until it's time for it to come back. Put these together and it means you can knock an ammo crate over, put bombs on the bottom and then collect it to send the bombs on a ride into the void with the crate. When it respawns the bombs will be on the bottom and the trap will be completely invisible, and killing someone who's camping a crate spawn with this trick in the second after the crate respawns is the most satisfying thing ever.

Please say 'leaked' in this sense means binaries.

I have no idea of this and I don't feel like downloading weird shit but looks like the emulator is Xenia and this is the rom?:

The 'problem' with Goldeneye is that it was a pioneer in its genre, like Ocarina of Time or Mario64. These games broke new ground, set new standards, and at the time were absolutely mind blowing. Two decades on the techniques, gameplay, presentation, etc have all advanced further and been much refined and polished - everything from the latest COD to Perfect Dark benefitted from Goldeneye's bold exploration of the genre. Unless you have a grasp of the history of game development to see how Goldeneye laid the foundation for every modern 3D shooter it can looks pretty clumsy and crude from a current year perspective.

This is the same reason why Citizen Kane is often considered a snoozefest by most people - they don't realize that it was the first to do so many things in cinema, and after decades of film the techniques it pioneered have become commonplace.

It's fascinating how different people all over the world comes up with the same thing. We mostly played proximity mines + gru offices. With one hit kills.
