What exactly is the point of this DLC? You just go around killing shit to come to terms with your past of killing shit?

God of War has become the most retarded fucking franchise in the Sony lineup, and that's really saying something. Nu-Sony/GoW fans are fucking retarded on top of being emotional women.
This game is worse off for having the DLC.

Basically. Kratos still feeling guilty over accidentally killing his wife and child, I can understand since thematically that's been part of GoW, to the point where their ashes are permanently bound to his skin. Kratos feeling guilty over having to kill the last Spartan, I also can understand.

For everything else, I don't see there being a reason for existing. He's had several hundred years since the destuction of Sparta to come to terms with what he did. You would think that he had pushed past the lingering feelings of guilt regarding being another god's plaything/errand boy when he willingly retrieved and used the blades of chaos in GoW4 to save Atreus. This is especially so when you consider GoW5 takes place 3 years after the events of GoW4. I just don't envision Kratos wallowing in self-pity for that long. I get that the studio wanted to have character development on Kratos, but it would have been more impactful and reasonable if the Norse pantheon destruction-quest happened within a few decades of the Greek pantheon destruction.

I did appreciate how Valhalla was a rogue-like, because it fits thematically with dying again and again in battle, but that was about it.

No, you see there is a massive difference. In the original trilogy you murder an entire pantheon and usher in the apocalypse after being manipulated by a crazy bitch and kill untold number of innocent humans. In the new games, you murder an entire pantheon after being manipulated by a crazy bitch and usher in the apocalypse but the game doesn't show you the destruction it causes on Humans, so it is morally superior.

Meeting an incarnation of Helios and getting the Blade of Olympus seems to be key-jingling/memberberries more than actually needing them for story-telling.

I'm relatively sure the only reason Helios was brought back in the DLC was because he was one of the more recent male characters Kratos beheaded. This allowed the game to try to draw parallels between the beheaded Helios and Mimir (and also swap them out as the story pleased). Try asking people if they remember Kratos beheading Alrik - which would have made more thematic sense if the studio was trying to paint Kratos as still being angsty over the murders he did under Ares.

Helios' death in the OG games was completely pointless since Kratos was perfectly willing to spare him if Helios merely gave him the information he sought. This is besides the point that a lot of the Greek pantheon's (and others, such as Hephaestus and Heracles) deaths were pointless and more often than not completely due to their own actions.

Unless it's been posted elsewhere in this thread, is this the last game for Kratos? Because it feels like it. There's nothing really else for him to do.

Not that many Norse gods die and the "apocalypse" is literally just Odin being removed from power then the world actually being destroyed. It's pretty lame.

Highly doubt it, they've already set up Egyptian, Japanese and Aztec mythologies existing.

Except that Tyr has already been to those places, so unless there's some sort of ongoing problem that he wasn't able to fix Kratos has no real reason to be there.

I'm thinking that we're going to get a game about his son going to the Fae courts.

Aztec mythologies
Man, if there was ever a pantheon that deserved to have Kratos happen to them...
i expected soytos to start crying when he saw himself on that throne being all masculine and "toxic"
They really emasculated him, didn't they? Only played the initial reboot but I felt they handled Kratos dealing with his past quite well in that game with him forced to confront his past mistakes for his son's future.

Xipe Totec flayed himself so you could eat, you ungrateful fuck

They squandered everything they set up in that game. It's astonishing really.

I've said for ages that there ought to be Soulslike or Bloodbornelike set in a Mesoamerican style world. Just said that because I've never played a God of War, though this Norse one piqued my interest recently.

Even the Nu-Assassin's Creed type of thing would go well with the Aztecs. Have the real world of them, and then the psychedelic sequences with fighting their demonic gods.

It's horribly underused. It's a real crime that most vidya games recycle the same tired, worn out European high fantasy and space lasers, to the point something as basic as Greek or Norse mythology feels exotic.

They probably die and do some cataclysmic damage to humanity with the big Avengers battle in the end, but who the fuck cares about humans in Fod of War. The important thing is all the oppressed fantasy races. Even a whale is more important than humanity.

The desire to deconstruct Kratos and the Norse pantheon along with uplifting Atreus and his "progressive" views overtook the actual mythological video game aspect. Ragnarok is a 24 hour thesis paper on how to ruin a setting.
What deconstruction? It's the basic bitch "what if good thing was bad", only that stories about Odin being a villain to survive Ragnarok is old as shit. Ditto Loki as a hero.

According to Twitter, Dave Jaffe no longer gets a say on the character he created. I'll spare you all the QRTs as it's a good way to raise your blood pressure.

The video is very fucking agreeable I feel. He echoes my thought that the 2018 version of the character was fine but Ragnarok was not at all what Kratos should be (Although I think he loses points for saying Ragnarok was good when it was pure slop.)

IIRC, Jaffe hasn't been involved in the industry proper for a long time now. Now's a good time as ever to go scorched earth on these Santa Monica losers.

I only played GoW4 for the first time this spring and liked it a lot. I had been keeping myself in the dark about Ragnarok anything because I figured I'd go into it blind when it finally makes its way to pc but now I'm not interested at all.

FWIW, it's a free, substantial expansion that offers more than most AAA titles does with their full price tag. With how greedy the gaming industry is, this is a godsend for any developer to celebrate their franchise and fans with goodwill and worthwhile content.
