I’m surprised such a big franchise like this doesn’t have a general thread, only a thread for the 2018 game. I’m pretty new to this franchise, having only finished God of War 4 and playing through the rest of the franchise. Might as well make a thread for this.

Probably because it's a pretty simple series with most entries being very samey. I like the first two, and Chains of Olympus. GoW3 & GoS weren't bad but I was pretty burned out on them already by that point.

Man, I remember how controversial the first game was back when it came out. Made me feel like I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to when my neighbor brought it over and it was the coolest feeling.

I think the first game is a very solid game with an interesting story. Looking back, yeah it’s a simpler game then the Devil May Cry games, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

2 was great too, but in retrospect, I didn’t care much for the cliffhanger ending. Mostly because I felt 3 was a bit underwhelming for the most part and I felt the ending was a bit of a cop out in a couple ways.

I recall playing Chains of Olympus but don’t remember much about it besides the ending.

I'm a massive fan of the first 3 games, all of them are fucking awesome imo, especially 2.

I even liked Ascension, the one everyone forgets about, though the formula was obviously starting to get stale, I never got around to playing the second PSP game, honestly the series felt like a waste on PSP despite me liking Chains of Olympus, but I honestly can't believe they wasted Atlantis as a setting for a fucking PSP game.

As for the 2018 game, I liked it a lot too, though I missed those sweeping, cinematic camera angles (though seeing epic scale stuff from a ground's eye view was cool in it's own way), I also missed the variety of locales you used to get since everything revolved around a central hub world (but it was cool how Ocarina of Time esque it felt) and obviously I missed the nudity and more graphic violence.

But while it was toned down the game didn't feel like a slap in the face to fans as say Last of Us 2 does and while I prefer "original recipe" they had done all they really could have done with it and the formula needed a big overall.

I also personally simply find Greek mythology cooler than Norse but again, they had done pretty much all they could have done with it.

However I'm worried about Ragnarok, the more time goes on, the more Woke Sony gets, 2018 was just the right levels of tolerable, but the presence of Anthony Burch on the writing team does not inspire confidence, I worry about another Last of Us 2 moment because video game development in NA is boiling down to "owning the Chuds!" and literally nothing else.

God of War was better when it was copying Devil May Cry not Last of Us.
The Last of Us inspiration is obvious but where I feel they took a lot of inspiration from is the forgotten 2003 Sony game Primal, which is one of the reasons why I liked God of War 2018 so much.

In Primal , which was developed by the same team that gave us the MediEvil games, you play as a goth chick with a little gargoyle sidekick hopping through various dimensions on an adventure, like GoW2018, you spend time in a snowy environment with Norse influences, the whole lore of Primal has Norse influence and like Krato's son, your gargoyle sidekick is a little guy that helps you out in various ways and the back and forth chatter between the two gives the game a lot of personality.

I feel like Primal was a stealth inspiration for Joel and Ellie in Last of Us and in turn I think God of War 2018 took even more inspiration, while I don't know if any of this has been stated any interviews, it's a hunch that I have.

People should check out Primal, it can be downloaded on the PS4's digital storefront if you want it in HD.

Ragnarok leaks are up and about and no one is talking about it here, so here we go:

9 minutes of cutscenes + gameplay (not saying anything about the contents of it to respect spoilers)

saw some leaks of the new game were you fight Thor and Odin. all i have to ask is, who the hell writes the dialog of this game? they sound nothing like how ancient gods should speak. they speak like your average sub IQ American with the vocabulary of a teenager that just discovered the word, fuck.

its absolutely horrendous.

Reading the leaks, I'm sure the typical daddy issue Sony fan is going to love this.

Hopefully it is at least fun.

Im pretty sure You can thank Anthony Burch for that since he was one of the writers for Ragnarok

This is one of those "if you liked the first one, you'll like this one" situations. I know /v/ and the like are obsessed with shitting on the Sony's first party games but GOW 2018 was a good game and everything about this one looks good too.

well, people said the same about last of us...

to be fair the game part was never really the issue.

this game was developed at the same time the last of us fiasco happened and cory balrog turned a sex obsessed weirdo into a soy cuck. it wont be good.
Im cautiously optimistic, Im waiting for for the other shoe to drop as far as making the kid gay or some stupid shit. But if its about the same quality as 2018 ill enjoy it. The biggest problem that game had was a lack of bosses, otherwise the father son narrative was pretty brilliant.

I like the central idea of a guy like Krato's trying to be more in control of himself for his son, if not moral. There was this delightful awkwardness seeing him try to be more interactive with people as opposed to simply killing everything in his way.

"I really need to be a better father to this kid than I was to my last one" is a pretty compelling and relevant motivation to Kratos. Not like he's carrying around his daughter's ashes around with him or anything...
