i know the answer is "whatever's convenient for whatever the thread is currently bitching about" but picking one at a time would at least resemble a genuine complaint

I was maddest about not being given the option to skip the six hours worth of cutscenes.

They weren't drawing from the Poetic Edda, as far as Ragnarok goes, but I didn't give a shit about that just like I didn't care about the original games doing goofy shit with Greek mythology. If they hadn't been so pretentious in their failed attempt at profundity then that could've helped, but only a little.

Speaking of cutscenes I'm at the point in life I guess it's part of being older and more adult but I'm really starting to dislike games trying to have a strong narrative with "something to say". No games cutscenes should be longer than three minutes at a time. I just want to play the game not watch a literal movie.

I completely agree there. It’s nice and all when you’re younger and have all the time in the world, but at one point you just wanna play a goddamn fun game. “Fun” is hard for some developers to figure out.

Ok I have to sperg all over the place about this because I genuinely have like thirty bajillion thoughts on this game: I'mma be frank I actually really liked God of War Ragnarok, but I would also be lying if I didn't say I prefer GOW 2018. I get what they were trying to do with this game (Attempting to step up on the aspects present in the first game) but I definitely feels like it falls flat, especially with the Berserkers replacing last game's Valkyries. I have yet to actually fight King Hrolf but I have felled half of the berserkers and they felt very underwhelming. Like the Valkyries of the last game actually felt extremely important (Probably due to the fact that their mythological counterparts are far more iconic than the berserkers) but also because there was the cool ass buildup to each fight with the descent into each hidden chamber of Odin, and then later placing all of their helmets on their thrones to challenge Sigrun. There is no such buildup with the Berserkers, like you just fuck off and do whatever and then you just find a random gravestone in the buttfuck middle of nowhere. But maybe that's just how the whole game is when it comes to its story. iirc Santa Monica made the Norse saga into only two games because they did not want to have everyone wait like ten years for the full story. But here's the issue: it would have been so much better if they split it evenly down the middle. We could have had more chances to flesh out Atreus's growth as he becomes a man, we could have had more of Thor actually fucking fighting Kratos across the story (LIKE BALDUR FROM THE FIRST GAME) instead of just at the beginning and end, we could have had a far crazier and stunning Ragnarok section instead of fighting through some trenches only to get yeeted across Asgard by Thor for one final (and underwhelming) final fight. There is so much they could have built upon that ultimately got shafted because they wanted to fit all of this into one game. So while I really liked the gameplay and still loved the characters (yes that includes Atreus) I definitely think the story is a step down from what we had before with GoW 2018. I would have included more thoughts but this is enough of a text wall as is.

I'm not sure about Kratos making the heart gesture here though. It reminds me too much of Neil Druckmann's unfunny memes that he likes to post, to get people to suck up to him and ND's games, and to "own" the haters.

What do you mean you're not sure, it's Kratos doing faggot gestures, it's 100% gay humiliation that should be condemned. Neil Druckmann started it and Sony is now using it in every franchise that they own since they're run by Californian faggots. It's sickening but expected.
 
Something I’ve noticed is the OG GOW trilogy clearly had developers that loved Greek mythology. It had its own spin on it, but it was incredibly accurate and research was clearly done. Ragnarok feels like a marvel version of Norse mythology, and extremely immature. (Even though GOW “matured” according to fanboys, it really was more mature with the originals.)
 
I torrented GoW 2018 a few weeks ago. I played all of the Greek games last year, sans ascension and wanted to give it a fair shake. Gave it 6 hours and while the Kratos and Atreus dynamic I find a little charming the pacing is so slow, even from a Sony game view. I'll try to go back to it eventually but I can't find the drive to keep playing without taking a long break from it.
 
Speaking of Ascension, is there a way to play it? It's not on the PSN (god forbid they'll have emulation), and the emulator I looked into couldn't run it.

I watched a clip of that, and yeah it is awful. The nu-GoW games were nothing if but character assassination of Kratos and this DLC of nu-Kratos channeling is inner soyboy to scream 'Be BetTeR!' at his old self was next level cringe and more proof that they hate the old games.

Also the DLC looks like trash, the same levels and boss fight multiple times for more Sweet Baby shit tier writing.

On the one hand, Kratos absolutely hated his own guts during the trilogy, and while I never played the third game IIRC GoW 2 started off with him making like Ares and smashing shit for fun to try and cope with the pain of being Kratos before Zeus shows up to knock him down a peg or three. On the other hand, he shouldn't be bothering with yelling like a little bitch at his old self because he knows that shit just doesn't fucking work and instead just proceed right to the part where he commences violence in an attempt to force some sort of enlightenment on the troubles of always resorting to violence, or at least wear him down to the point where he can force him to pretend to listen.

The word I wanna say is immature. Autistically bitching about your past self is very immature, actual mature people just accept who they were and make peace about their decisions, or happiness they've grown since then. Also it really removes context from his path where he had some good qualities and that he was manipulated by the gods and fate.
