That's some very interesting wording.

IANAL, but the way I read this it sounds like there's nothing preventing Russians or Belarusians from funding racing teams based outside of Russia or Belarus.

It also seems like Dmitry Mazepin hasn't been directly hit with sanctions against him or his companies... yet. That said, the blanket economic sanctions against Russia and the fact Uralchem's main freight terminal is located in Latvia will most likely put strain on their finances.

Will he be as happy to keep throwing money at Haas if he's unable to promote his companies via sponsorship? What happens if he and/or his companies end up being hit with sanctions at some point during the Russian-Ukraine War? I also wonder whether he's beginning to regret his decision to move his companies from Cyprus to Kaliningrad at the end of last year...

As long as Mazepin doesn't, for instance, flout Russian propaganda on his social media, kneels before a race to honor Putin or some shit like that, I think it's fair and square to allow him to race.

Can anyone spare $5 million I need to buy a new car...

What legends are made of.
McLaren looked set to dominate the race, with championship leader Mika Hakkinen qualifying on pole ahead of teammate David Coulthard at a track on which it's notoriously difficult to overtake. Schumacher, who started third, was stuck behind Coulthard – who’d slowed his pace to protect Hakkinen’s lead, as Mika’s car developed a shock absorber problem.

Brawn had taken the bold move of pitting Schumacher for a short second pitstop, giving him the ultimatum of gaining 25s in just 19 laps: “We need 19 qualifying laps from you,” said Brawn over the radio, to which Schumacher calmly replied: “OK, thank you.”

The chassis is the 1998 Hungarian Grand Prix winner, a victory that was viewed as a strategic masterstroke by Ross Brawn as well as proof of Schumacher’s genius behind the wheel.

Schumacher’s amazing pace, to which Coulthard had no answer, when combined with Hakkinen’s handling problem, was the key to a sensational victory by over 9s at the chequered flag.

“This was one of my most emotional wins,” said Schumacher. “The team picked the right strategy, although at first I was not quite sure if our plan would work out, as I was stuck behind Jacques [Villeneuve in the Williams] and David for some time.
“In the end, it turned out that the team had made the right decision. Of course, we benefited from the problems of our competitors, although throughout the race I could easily match the pace of the McLarens.”

Schumacher even briefly left the track, losing almost 5s, but didn't damage the car.

“When I went off the track I did not realise I was already in the lead,” he said. “Ross told me I had 19 laps to make up a 25-second lead to stay in front after my third pit stop, so I pushed as hard as possible.”

Schumacher drove this car once more later in the season, in the Suzuka finale. Although he qualified on pole, his race went wrong before the start when he stalled on the formation lap, meaning he started at the tail of the grid.

He stormed his way through the pack and was running third when he ran over debris from a previous collision between two other cars, and his tyre deflated three laps later. That allowed Hakkinen to cruise to his first F1 World Championship title.

“First of all I want to congratulate Mika Hakkinen and his team,” said Schumacher. “They performed better throughout the season and so they deserve the title. I think we did not lose this championship in Suzuka, but in the early stages of the season, when we were too far behind.

“I do not feel too disappointed, because I think the team can be proud of what we achieved this season. I feel sad for the boys, as all their hard work did not pay off in the end. The engine stalled because the clutch did not free itself and I do not know why. All the work this weekend was then wasted as I had to start from the back.

“The first couple of laps were good fun. All the other drivers were very fair and did not try and make life difficult for me. I did not expect a rear tyre to explode as I had problems with a flat-spotted front, which caused a lot of vibration.”

Isn't it kinda autistic to ban Russian athletes and all that? It's not like MazeSpin could Latifi crash a Russian column from taking Kiev.

"NONONO, UN, THIS IS SO NOT RIGHT! YOU NEED TO REINSTATE THAT LAST PUSH!"

"Putin, it's called a war, we went to war."

It seems odd that an individual venue can ban a driver when the governing body of the entire sport allows them. Visa issues aside if the governing body say they're good to race I don't know how they would have the power.

It would be like Manchester United banning Chelsea from playing at Old Trafford with "well its our venue so we can ban who we like", well yes you can but your fucking with the sport over a matter which the governing body has already taken action.

I mean aside from just how retarded everyone has gone over all of this.

According to an Austrian news-source, Haas has fired Mazepin and will replace him with Fittipaldi.

I really dislike Mazepin and I don't think he was a good driver in his first season, even by rookie standards, but it's still kinda ... It just doesn't sit well with me, to have a driver drop out of F1 for such political reasons, as long as they don't politicize their participation, they should be allowed to drive.

But then again, without the Uralkali logo, it's very likely Mazepin Sr. just pulled the plug on financing Haas and thus, Mazepin Jr. will now have to look for another sport.

He's kind of a shitbag and not that great of a driver but I can't help but feel that Mazepin is something of a victim in this. Its not like Putin called him up for advice on when to kick shit off. His only option is to try and be as aggressively neutral as possible. If he voices support for Russia, he's out. But if he speaks out against Russia he's going to be get fucked in his home country.

I agree that it's probably a side effect of the money, but it wouldn't surprise me if Gunther is just getting ahead of the ball and trying to replace him (and the funding) before governments decide at the 11th hour Russians can't get a visa.

Steiner no, look around the grid and the feeder series. Have a few chats around. See if you can get a good driver in that seat. I mean Alpine might be willing to cough up to get Piastri a seat or Ferrari have a good stable of drivers ready to go that will come with some benefits. Hell go see if Kubica has plans and get him in.

This might not be such a shame in the case of Maz but drivers like Kviat and Shwartzman are getting screwed over too.

Kviat put out a statement:

I wonder if Hamilton and Co will speak put against this, surely "you can't be part of this sport because the government of the country you were born in did a naughty" goes against the principals of we race as one?

It's all a bit hypocritical anyway. Saudi is busy fucking up it's neighbour and they got given a GP.

Kviat has the best response to this crisis of anyone I've seen.

On Marzipan being replaced by Fittipaldi:

I doubt Fittipaldi would be there long past Australia unless he magics up some colourful Brazilian money. Contracts need to negotiated including getting the other driver out of this year's contract with someone else and getting a seat made. Next test is in less than 7 days and they need a driver probably yesterday.

It took Merc over a month to announce Bottas after Rosberg left and that was a pretty easy deal.

Oh for fuck sake, just take the L and get on with 22.

He was "turned" interesting choice of words there, that's typically used when someone on your side goes to the other side, admitting something there Toto?

I wonder how much Masi bashing they can do before it become actionable.

This is the kind of shit that FIA needs to put brakes on, simple as that. By allowing this shitshow to continue, they make it appear legit, while making themselves look like chumps.
Unless they want to come forward and announce that Hamilton won and it was Masi who spun it around for RB, they need to tell Wolff to shut his fucking pie hole.

Bunch of clowns.

Does Toto think that this will endear him to anyone other than the Mercedes nut huggers? He's the millionaire boss of the best team with the best engines and the best drivers and the most championships and he's still whining about getting screwed even though he used his power to get the person who supposedly screwed him fired. It takes a special kind of egotistical douchebag to complain about persecution even after you got the FIA to do your bidding. I see why he and Lewis are two peas in a pod- both of them think that they are downtrodden underdogs even though they're really arrogant narcissists who have everything that everyone else can only dream of.

I'm not a fan of Mazespin (and really, who is?), but I would have liked him to get the chance to get fired on his own demerits. Persecuting random sportspeople just for sharing an ethnicity with the latest target du jour is really scummy. At the very least, if he gets fired I hope this opens up a seat for Oscar Piastri.
