This is it, isn't it. After decades of walking the line and keeping my spergery at socially acceptable levels, it's the 2022 F1 season, with its stupid sexy cars, that is going to earn me a restraining order from the FIA, a blanket ban from Tumblr for drawing said cars as lingerie-clad Transformers, and my own thread on Kiwi Farms with the tagline - 'Car-fucker'.

Screw you Liberty Media. This kind of nonsense would never have happened under Ecclestone. Sure there were cars during that era that you might want to share a few beers with, prior to tearfully asking them if they would be best man at your wedding. I can't think of any that would make you want to steal the company payroll so you could run away together to Dubai, and a begin a new career working as influencers within the yachting community.

You gotta admit that even without this context, Jezza makes a valid point about Mazepin being a fucking retard who'd still lose if he was racing on his own.

The problem for Haas is that they are an American company and Uncle Sam will gladly fuck them up if they try to skirt around the political sanctions. Ferrari in turn is an Italian company that is technically Dutch so they have way more legal wiggle-room and not a single Italian is gonna give a fuck who sponsor the red car as long as their checks don't bounce.

Will be fun to see the hyped headlines which always pop up till the first race weekend.

My completely lukewarm take from this test is "we ain't seen the actual potential yet but Alfa and Haas in trouble and cars look cool again."

The first race is this weekend in St. Pete's, FLA.
Grosjean was voted most popular driver last year by fans.
ANNNNDDDDD, he led the first practice today!!

I hope he kicks some royal ass and does extremely well. While at beginning of his career he was a first lap nutcase, he got hard done by being with Haas (except for first year) and although he got some podiums early days with Lotus, sucks that he didn't bag a win. I think he is talented, and that seems to be playing out with his switch to IndyCar. And of course, you cant help but have the feels for him to achieve glory after his end in F1. If Andretti does make F1 next year, Grosjean/Herta would make a good combo for a number of reasons. I hope it happens, but in meantime, I am hoping Romain gets a great result this weekend and throughout the season. He will be doing full schedule, and with Andretti he has a shot to do extremely well in the championship!
 
@LiveFromNS i watched a few Indycar races last year to see Romain as well. They really love him over here! I remember nbc was talking about him quite a bit during the down times of the race. If he is planning to make a legit run at the championship this year I wonder if he is going to drive the oval races or not? Of course when he first came here he said he didn’t want to but then he had an oval test, I think it was once he was with Andretti. I just hope he had a change of heart and wants to race ovals and isn’t just doing it because he is contractually obligated to now that he’s on the big time team.

I started really following Indy again when Marcus went over. So, yeah I have been watching all the races and keeping abreast of the series. I knew he was getting some great and deserved praise from fans and announcers. I think the circumstances of his crash and being such a huge event in motorsports certainly made him a bit more in the public eye because of that and gave people extra feels considering he could have easily tragically died from that crash.

And YES! He is doing the full schedule as I said. He is doing all 17 races. He did the one oval race last year at Gateway. And did quite well for a large part of it if I am remembering correctly. I think he will be fine on most ovals, but Brickyard of course is the big one. As long as he can say get a top 10 at the 500, with the double points, that would be a good result. The higher the better, but with so many points on offer at the 500, you need to bag a good result there too.

I expect that I will have another enjoyable year watching Indycar as it is quite competitive and while not the same allure and luster as F1, its great racing and couple F1 rejects to root for.

BTW, I watched the Daytona 500 last weekend. Good old fucking Villeneuve. Stayed out of trouble and came home 22nd! Hope he gets to do some more Nascar. Weirdly, this year is 25th anniversary of his F1 title, so I was of course hoping, by some major fluke, that he'd win the damn 500 as that would have made it a neat story.

And one final other series mention. The F3 Asia series was won by Charles' brother Arthur. Won it by a fairly respectable margin but didn't completely demolish the competition. I was also watching the F4 Asian races until they stopped showing them after Round 3. But another ex-F1 racer's son was competing. Charlie Wurz.

I come bearing great news the porpoise is being killed as we speak and just like a cat there is more than one way to do it. With Ferrari and McLaren in the lead.

According to Mercedes, McLaren has found a way to stop the fluttering of the floor and still drive low. A long slot parallel to the edge is embedded on the rear part of the floor plate, which is supposed to prevent pumping because it gives the air an escape route when the floor bends downward. This opinion is shared by other teams. Haas took a big step toward solving the problem with a similar solution on the second day of testing.

Ferrari drives high and soft

Aston Martin has to raise the rear of its car and trim the suspension to hard to escape the vicious circle. Ferrari solves the problem differently than McLaren. The red cars stand tall in the rear but ride with plenty of suspension travel. You accept some of the sway, but in return you're fast in the slow corners. Sector measurements show that Ferrari makes its time in the last section of the track.

Bouncing problem: McLaren trick with the underbody

The pumping of the new cars on the straights keeps the engineers busy. Whoever solves the problem best will be rewarded with lap time. McLaren and Ferrari have apparently found a trick with the underbody.

According to the first impressions of the test drives, Ferrari and McLaren are currently ahead. However, according to Mercedes and Red Bull, this is not yet an indication that last year's world championship third and fourth-place finishers have hit the nail on the head with their cars. The Ferrari F1-75 and the McLaren MCL36 are too different for that.

Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey sees the key to fast laps at this early stage of testing in how well the teams have solved the problem of pumping on the straights: "It's not hard to turn off the bouncing. But it's hard not to lose lap time in the process." Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff concurs: "You can go up in the back with the ground clearance. But then you're slow."

The same thing happens if you set the suspension too hard. Then you lose driving comfort and time in the slow corners. The car's touchdown not only maltreats the chassis and underbody, it also unsettles the drivers. "You have to be more careful when braking. If the car loses downforce at the moment of braking of all things, it becomes uncomfortable," one engineer tells us.

McLaren floor with longitudinal slot

The top two teams in the field haven't gotten the hang of it yet. Ferrari and McLaren apparently have. In addition to ground clearance and suspension travel, the flexibility of the underbody also plays a role. For example, above 300 km/h, the edges of the floor bend toward the road on many cars. "That's when this process of suction and extraction occurs," Wolff tells us.

According to Mercedes, McLaren has found a way to stop the fluttering of the floor and still drive low. Aston Martin had a similar solution in the wind tunnel until Christmas, but then opted for a vertical lip at the edge of the floor because it promised better lap times. At that point, they couldn't have guessed that they would be thwarted by the sway problem. The secret lies in where on the floor you place the slot and how big it is. Too big reduces pumping, but costs too much downforce in the corners. "The trick is to find the balance of how much you give away to fix the problem," says Haas team boss Guenther Steiner.

If McLaren really has found the solution to the problem with its slot trick, all the teams will be using it in Bahrain. That's easy to copy, even in these days of budget caps. One Aston Martin engineer predicts, "Only when everyone turns off the rocking will we know who really has a fast car."

The effect that is now causing headaches for so many teams was predictable, according to Adrian Newey. "It was there in the first groundeffect era 40 years ago. It's inherent in this aerodynamic principle." The engineering guru tells us that rulemakers were warned of such consequences, but that no one took those concerns seriously.

Teams reject FIA offer

Pat Symonds, the father of the new regulations, disagrees: "We offered the teams that the floors could be bent upwards by 25 millimeters at the outer edges. That would probably have alleviated the problem. But the teams didn't want that because they were too advanced in their design process."

Newey doubts whether this would have solved all the problems. Because it didn't show up that way in the wind tunnel. There, you can't simulate what happens in reality on the track.

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto takes it in stride: "The pumping is worse than expected. The three-dimensional underbody is certainly one of the causes. We'll all solve this problem somehow. Whoever can do it fastest will have an advantage at the start." Ferrari already had its first underbody upgrade on Friday.
 
I did like the way he pissed off reddit fags. The salt was great. I do hope Hass will get someone decent if they replace him and not just Fitipaldi. Get their ass over the Alpine and see if they want Piastri in a seat rather than being their reserve or some shit. Hell get Kubika back, having Russia's loss being Poland's gain would be good plus you can't not like the guy.

Funny thing is I found that MAZ's conduct in his first year in F1 was pretty good. Alright he was a rubbish driver, but during the season he always came across as professional and approachable, and he took part in the F1 social media stuff and came across well in that too. Obviously his reputation precedes him and he deserves the flack he got for that, but at the same time as you say he also brought value in pissing off redditors.

Oh they're absolutely fucked if they lose that russian oligarch money. They're the title sponsor and handed over enough to put a meh driver in one of their seats. No way they're not absolutly reliant on that money.

I don't really know what their options would be with a "pay driver", but that's not synonymous with "shit driver" (Perez for example comes with both skill and a shit ton of moeny) they need someone good with a big pot of money.

One option that makes sense (on paper at least) would be for Andretti to come in and help prop up the team with a view to becoming a part-owner. It wouldn't be the first time Andretti has taken this approach. Andretti is a shareholder in Walkinshaw Andretti United, the Australian Supercars Championship team (Walkinshaw and Andretti are equal major shareholders, with United having a small minority holding).

Oddly enough, Andretti came along shortly after Holden took its official factory-backed racing operations to Triple Eight (along with the Holden Racing Team's name), thus stepping in to plug a pretty big hole in Walkinshaw's budget. Ofc it's all academic now since GM shut down Holden, but that's off topic.

Given that there's already talk of Andretti buying Haas if FIA won't let him set up his own F1 team for the 2024 season, this could be a win-win for Haas and Andretti. It'd buy Haas more time and it'd give Andretti the chance to prove to FIA that they have the chops to operate an F1 team (albeit jointly with Haas).

In the Haas Andretti scenario, I'd expect Colton Herta to be the "pay driver" of the team. Herta might be a bit green, but he has a few IndyCar wins under his belt and can't be any worse than Mazepin. Probably not this season, as Herta doesn't have enough Super Licence points yet. Maybe Andretti could offer to pay someone like Kubica or Hulkenberg to keep the seat warm until Herta is ready?

I know that Grosjean would be the most logical Andretti F1 placeholder on paper... but I really don't they would do that to him given the horrific ending to his F1 career

The most probable replacement for Mazepin is Pietro Fittipaldi because he's already their reserve driver and Brazil would nut itself dry for a new Fittipaldi in F1. The second most likely option is Antonio Giovinazzi because he's the Ferrari reserve driver and out of a seat this year, with plenty of existing experience in the sport. The most likely reason for the replacement would be Nikita not being able to actually fly anywhere because of his Russian citizenship.

Steiner has said if Maz can't drive for whatever reason then it will be Fittipaldi. I'm sure they could do much better (like you say Gio, or any number of good drivers that come with a purse), he didn't seem like much when he covered for Grosjean after the impromptu human tourch audition, like way off the pace even compared to the struggling Williams. I doubt he would be a step up from Maz.

As cool as it would be to see Punished Grosjean come back over and dominate the field in the new Andretti-Haas team, he's having too much fun in the 'states. Granted, he had a rough go of it for the last few years with Haas, but he's on record as saying that kids should grow up dreaming of racing in Indycar, not F1. Which is a hell of a statement from any driver that's done both.
