This was a 100% corporate decision. Mobile games of popular series never go well, because those intricate and complex series are boiled down to basically dopamine reward systems where you pay for everything. In fact, that's what all mobile games are: money extractors designed to find the weakest willed whales and siphon money out of them. They're not based on any good design philosophies. A lot of mobile game companies even hire behavioral psychologists to determine how to make a game as addictive as possible.

Mobile gaming isn't gaming. Its a time waster when you don't want to have to think too much or just want to fuck around a bit when you're waiting for something. I've never found them engaging or compelling or even all that fun. They're for people who can't really or don't want to game seriously and already have a platform to access it and just do it because its there. And in other countries because a phone is cheaper than a console. The only people who consider mobile gaming 'gaming' are corporate cocksuckers or game journos.

This is bound to fail like all the other clones.
There's exactly one good example of a successful mobile game of a successful traditional game series that didn't piss off it's player base and it's Fallout Shelter and it worked because it didn't replace the game instead it was basically released as an ad for Fallout 4 not instead of Fallout 4. Blizzard should have taken that example to heart but instead they decided to emulate EA's mining of IPs they own but don't care enough about to make a real game for. It's just heaping embarrassment on top of Blizzard's already full year of stupid decisions.

I don't get the appeal of gaming on your phone anyways.

It's a cramped FoV, small interface, fiddly, hard to control and uncomfortable to do for any length of time if you're grown beyond the age of like... 7.
It depends on the genre. Mobile games are great on lunch breaks, a commute where you're not driving, waiting in a doctor's office or some other scheduled appointment, and family moments where your presence is expected, but nobody's actually engaging with you. My preferred mobile games are the Kairosoft simulators where you run a mega mall or a little fantasy dungeon village and make sweeping management decisions to steer the behavior of your little NPCs into performing a certain way in a 16 year playthrough. They're easy to make small progress into and have a lot of depth in multiple playthroughs, and more than a few times I've committed way more time into a sit-down session of a few hours than I care to admit.

That said, as a Diablo fan of all three mainline games I was actually interested in the Diablo: Immortal announcement and trailer in the Blizzcon opening ceremonies; a lowkey, watered down title for mobile play from Blizzard could actually be appealing for doing a Rift or two here and there as I do with my little simulators and RPGs. Keywords, "from Blizzard." After seeing other fans reactions, and hearing/seeing that this is Diablo assets slapped onto a pre-existing companies' mobile ARPG my attitude has changed a lot. Provenance matters. I expect Blizzard to make a Diablo game, not some chink sweatshop. It's part of why I'm not playing some chink skinnerbox lookalike right now. I could download and play/emulate Endless of God right now if I cared to, and I don't. If Blizzard wants my patronage, they better make a mobile game themselves.

I think it'll be interesting to see the longterm solution Blizzard implements here, because they've shitcanned 90% complete games twice before; their Starcraft Ghost & Warcraft: Adventures(RIP). Then again they've recently launched one anyways to much fanfare(Overwatch).

And of course game dev lolcows are chiming in:

Has screaming at the customer base that they're bigoted russian hacker bot gates ever resulted in a successful product?

"This game looks like a pile of shit and nobody wants pc brands being stapled onto phone apps for faux legitimacy" is a pretty bipartisan perspective. I'm half expecting people to say I like trump because I hate Mtv.
If anything 'Blizzard' have been riding on the coatails of Diablo 1&2 which was made by a differant sub-studio coming up to two decades now. Number 3 was passable but never would have it on it's own rep. Blizzard cashed in it's goodwill cheques years ago and I don't give a shit that they're reconning warcraft 3's plot to intregrate the incoherant event fluff justifications of WoW events.

Activision/blizzard is just EA with less companies dragged down with it. So all you really have to do is not buy their shit so they can just die.

"Its [sic] entitlement." said by a guy who still has a hashtag in his name which complains about Disney not continuing his beloved franchise like he wants them to.

At this stage it's pretty clear Bob would support a series where you torture small animals in the name of Hitler and 25% of the profits go to Harvey weinstein if the general public disaproved.

If you are going to do Diablo on mobile why not do Diablo 1 and maybe 2? That seems like a way to please old fans and get the game out to people that never played it. I'd be down to play a couple levels of the labyrinth on my phone every now and again.

Not to mention your phone is the last thing you want to drain your battery on.

The beauty is that a lot of that team from that sub-studio made Titan Quest - which God bless THQ Nordic for bringing it back - and then later made Grim Dawn as Crate Entertainment.

I can tell you I've had more fun with Titan Quest and Grim Dawn than anything Blizzard has put out recently.

And as always, Bob's long ass diatribe manages to get him some ass pats while he bitches about what must be "entitlement". Yes, because obviously it must either be mobile only (Fallout Shelter says hello, Bob) or that this is obviously great (Chinese netizens say it's likely to just be a reskin, Bob).

Not to mention your phone is the last thing you want to drain your battery on.
When considering how battery life is, one would realize you're better off just playing on a DS but really, we gotta have a mobile Diablo while hearing from gaming journalist how these gamers are evil gatekeepers/not troo gamers and from notable lolcows how this must be full on entitlement.

If anyone asks me this, I'd show them mine, which is from 2006 and, at best, can only run GBC emulator.
I've been playing the fuck out of that emulator on my spudphone.

Now that I think about it isn't there proto of a Diablo I port to the gameboy floating around out there?

Me too, altho Meboy is not the best emulator, so I have to be selective (also, no proper sound support).

Yes, and it looks too eye-watering to try for me.
