- DESTINY: REUNITED
- Motherfuckers fused all content from D1 and D2 into one giant thing. Effectively D1 remastered and brought into D2's buildcrafting system (optional), while bringing back all the vaulted stuff for D2
I get this is a shitpost, but in a perfect world, this would be the best thing to do.
The whole reason the DCV became a thing in the first place was because D2 was never meant to last more than a couple of years. The original contract with Activision stipulated a new game every two years, supplemented by one major expansion (TTK-level) in the off years and two minor expansions (TDB/HoW-level) every year. Obviously we all know how that played out in practice, but the end result is that when a game is only meant to be built upon for a couple years, you don't really bother with being too efficient. By the time any issues built up with development, the next game would be out.
But when the decision was made to extend D2 indefinitely instead of releasing D3, they started running into the problems that those shortcuts caused. I'm not blaming them for making those choices at the time of development; they couldn't have foreseen that the game would be running not just for two or three years, but now close to a decade. Still, that left them with a foundation that wasn't designed to be built upon so heavily, and as a consequence, they needed to rebuild that foundation with a major engine update, which then required them to rebuild all the old content to work on it. But the playerbase wouldn't be all that happy about too many delays, so they chose to cut out large swaths of the game that were less frequently played to get the next expansion out the door faster.
Was it a dumb move that killed a lot of trust in Bungie? 100%. But I can't blame them for making it at the time. As much as we talk about how we've needed a true D3 for years, it's easy to forget how upset people were that they had to leave everything behind in D1. Even as some things gradually got reintroduced, there's still a lot of things people miss from the first game. And now with D2 having been around three times as long as D1 was, that's a
lot more content that players would be asked to give up.
So, if I could have my pie-in-the-sky version of Destiny, it would be for Bungie to do another complete foundational overhaul of Destiny's systems in lieu of new content for a while. Do whatever engineering voodoo is required to make development easier and allow the game to scale up without needing to axe chunks of the game every so often. On that new base, bring together everything from D1 and D2, reintroducing every campaign, destination, and activity to a single install (Wrath of the Machine, my beloved). And drop last-gen console support while we're at it, that's long overdue. Once that's done, only then start adding in new content and pick up the story where we left off.
I'm under no illusion that that would happen, no way in hell would anyone give them the funds for all that effort and get basically no return on that investment for years, but a man can dream.
