All of his actions were constantly trying to get the Witness to notice him and let him serve it, but without any of that years of buildup, it just comes out of nowhere.
I get that, it still doesn't make sense to me. There isn't a single deed or action he's done that makes him worthy of becoming a disciple. Rhulk razed his planet and was the extinction event of his species. I can't really speak on Nezarec as I fucked off from Destiny during Plunder and never went back to finish the story when I returned for Seraph. Calus? He's a glutton who wants to indulge in opulence and be the witness of the end. Even leading up to Lightfall his two major plot beats are presage where he tries and succeeds in communing with the Witness and Haunted which is him trying to break Zavala, Caitl and Crow by using their past failures to torment them through the power of the Lunar Pyramid which is explicitly Nezarec's. Maybe he could've been an abomination in the form of a Subjugator mixed with a Tormentor with the Witness telling him that he will grant him his original form but as a disciple making him all the more desperate to succeed and crush us. Then at the end he is transformed into his proper disciple form so us crushing him is all the more humiliating with the witness laughing as he falls.

I think that's the point of it, honestly, that Calus wasn't worthy. Calus led a life of hedonistic pleasure, only to be deposed by his more militaristic advisors and exiled from his empire. He drifted aimlessly across the stars until he somehow brushed against the power of the Witness which gave him a purpose again, although whether that was actually the Witness communicating with him or his own delusions is up for debate. Even then, his decision to become the Witness's herald was self-serving, as it was his ultimate goal to be the last one alive at the end so all would know his glory.

Out of any of the Disciples, Calus had the shortest tenure by far, and that was likely by design of the writers, showing that it was his continued vanity and greed that proved his undoing. He kept begging and pleading to be noticed, and it was only after he communed with the Lunar Pyramid that he finally got what he wanted, unlike other Disciples that the Witness approached first. It's likely that the Witness could see that he wasn't actually a true believer in its cause, or at least not in the same way, but after the events around the Moon, it saw that he could still be a useful tool. To that end, though, the Witness really didn't seem to care about Calus succeeding or failing because it had contingencies in place either way; all of the Disciples are expendable, of course, but Calus especially so. He even flat out yells at Calus halfway through the campaign because he clearly doesn't understand his place and continues to believe himself more than a speck in the face of a god. I think it's more poignant that the Witness says absolutely nothing about his death, showing just how insignificant he truly was, adding to the overall tragedy of what he had pursued for so long.

There are a lot of ways it could have been handled differently, sure, but I don't really have an issue with how it all played out. Except for, as mentioned, the end.

Concept art and old internal slideshow leaks seem to indicate a patrol in the last city and plans for a clan space station, which exists as far back as shadowkeep in the cubemaps (along with a fully rebuilt and updated d1 tower with brand new art)

You can find a lot of other interesting things in the shadowkeep cubemaps, like Io when it was still mars, Siva logo on Exodus Black, a bunch of unfinished locations, d1 leftovers.
It will always bug me how much potential they pissed away with this franchise, going all the way back to the OG Staten cut. If only they had a tard wrangler to keep them from blowing so much time/money on so much dumb shit, blocking things that would obviously piss off large swathes of their fanbase like vaulting, etc.

Pretty sure that Calus was changed at some point. There were some implication of him being massive size which I always assume more of metaphorical way of describing his immense power. Some players also thought he was a Leviathan AI or the ship itself which is quite cool thing to be a stareating ship.

Grounded Calus is just too weak as a disciple, comparing to Oryx (one of the most powerful Hive) and Rhulk. Especially if you realize that Cabal's homeworld Torobatl was wiped by Hive.
This was awesome, an enigmatic, ominous fleet of paracausal entities/ships that appear to be the darkness equivalent of the Traveller, opposite to it in shape, color, and numbers. But you know what missing?
They miss the fucking crew. All of them empty (as I remember) beside one with Nezarec.
The latter. Yeah, we were always going to kill Calus in the end, he was too far gone to ever come back even if he wanted to
But we spared Eramis who was a bit smaller in the scale but quite bad as well. Moreover she went to rebuild the Fallen's homeworld.
In fact, EVERYTHING in Lightfall felt like it became a retarded cartoon. Why they chose to do this in the expansion right before the dramatic ending of the story will always be a mystery to me.
Lightfall is basically "Endgame Avengers: Destiny 2 edition". Nimbus is a perfect example of awkward Marvel humor.

I don't think anyone was happy about the Revenant campaign, honestly, especially the conclusion. Eramis was a right cunt that was perfectly happy to let the Witness enslave the Fallen and nuke humanity with the Warsat network, but throw in some "muh feefees" and it's all no big deal anymore. Then on top of that, when it's clear the Echo of Riis should have gone to Mithrax (y'know, seeing as how he's the Kell of Kells and all), it just decides that Eramis was simply misunderstood and went with her as she fucks off out of the system, and we just let her do that and trust that she'll be true to her word and use it to rebuild Riis, not running off to abuse its power and come back a greater threat.

I'm fine with there being subgroups of enemy factions that can be allied with, but I'm tired of this heel-turn bullshit with characters that really don't deserve a redemption arc. You don't get to go from pulling the trigger on genocide to being best buddies.

I wonder if plans for Rasputin were changed before Lightfall. The Season of The Seraph events made it seem like he was going to be transformed into a character similar to the Staten Cut Rasputin. The destruction of the Warsats would've removed most of his firepower and they could've also included some other lore about how its destruction destabilized most of his remaining infrastructure, leaving all of it isolated and unfunctional.

Pretty sure they retconned Rasputin at least once during D2 launch or something like that, I remember it going from few Warminds into one being Rasputin. But beside that I think Bungie had plans to resurrect him as a Guardian at some moment since he bravely sacrificed himself and it makes him eligible to become a Guardian. Same with Amanda Holliday.

Speaking as the ultimate Johnny-Come-Lately to this game, the gunplay is a lot of fun. The Witness is a bitch. The story is disjointed ass. The new player experience is fucking atrocious. And it wasn't until I saw a high-res character model of Nimbus in a goddamn cutscene that I realized I *wasn't* staring at that abomination's fucking dick in a banana hammock every time I interacted with it to advance the Plot. Who in the fuck okayed that design with the catcher's flap crotch guard that's the same color and texture as the rest of its spandex underoos?

youtube has recommended me this video, with the D2 pre-vault restoration project going shit looks good, unless sony does a sony of course.

Even if autists never manage to figure out how to do all the server-side fuckery to make old content actually playable, it's still impressive that it's possible to run around and explore the old vaulted areas. Since it's using your existing installation and not having you download game files (the mod just blocks it from checking Bungie's servers and has it load the local files), hopefully they should avoid any potential copyright issues. It's not like this is hurting the integrity of the actual game, after all, since you're unable to actually play activities or play with other people, so hopefully some idiot lawyer doesn't get the idea to shut it down.

I'll definitely be checking this out once they get it to a release. It's been six years since I've had a chance to explore those vaulted destinations, it'd be a fun nostalgia trip to wander through them again. I wonder if it's possible to load from specific seasons, since there were other changes over time that would be interesting to take a look at.

I really wish I'd been thinking of doing it at the time, but I wish I'd taken a screenshot of every Director update over time as more worlds got added (and then taken away, and then added again). Destinypedia has most of them, but not every variant. If it's possible to load from any time period, then it would be easy to see how it evolved over time. I'll let smarter people than me figure that out.

The actual calus was always the purple floating head we see in his raid boss in leviathan, i think those player assumptions were just those who didn't know/understand that. I think the size talk was both literal and metaphorical since he did "grow fat from strength" chasing the darkness/witness but he was also just a big guy in general, the robots we fight in leviathan i think are the size of 2-3 lightfall caluses.
Grounded Calus is just too weak as a disciple, comparing to Oryx (one of the most powerful Hive) and Rhulk. Especially if you realize that Cabal's homeworld Torobatl was wiped by Hive.
Calus would have been much stronger if he stayed solo or found a way to have a shadow legion like army without becoming a disciple of the witness. It tracks with his character that instead of the longer, harder and more dangerous path of doing that he just chases the more powerful guy and beg to be a top guy of his
I don't think anyone was happy about the Revenant campaign
Glad to see i didn't miss much when i stopped playing mid way into echoes. Only downside is im outdated on what happened seasonally and the status on certain characters and their reputation fan wise
Pretty sure they retconned Rasputin at least once during D2 launch or something like that, I remember it going from few Warminds into one being Rasputin.
Originally we thought the fragment of rasputin we found was him and that other bunkers would have other warminds. With D2: Warmind its revealed rasputin is actually on mars, way bigger than the fragment plus bunker is and is probably the only warmind to survive the collapse. I don't think its a retcon i think it's them leaving it open regarding what they wanna do with warminds going forward from d1 and deciding one is enough with rasputin and subminds like Charlemagne filling the role whenever they wanna do warmind stuff.
But beside that I think Bungie had plans to resurrect him as a Guardian at some moment since he bravely sacrificed himself and it makes him eligible to become a Guardian. Same with Amanda Holliday.
Glad they didn't resurrect Amanda, it gets really annoying seeing "well bring them back as a guardian!" get thrown around after every character death. I think its way better narrative building to not resurrect every dead character and actually have these deaths fully affect the characters, its why cayde coming back in final shape works especially since he gives up the second chance in the end to fulfill the guardian mantra, amanda's death also fuels zavala's actions for the rest of the light/dark saga

Some of the lore on Calus' size and form.

Penumbral Cloak:
A tiny, tiny man sped through the now-gaping maw of the gates on a tiny Earth machine. It took him several minutes more to reach earshot of me,
The miniscule man dismounted his machine and stared up. I pictured I would relish the moment when his eyes went wide at the sight of my grandeur.

But he didn't seem to care. He frowned a little. Fascinating.

"Is that you?" he asked, voice echoing upwards at me. "The real you?"

"Yes," I replied, and the metal around me rattled and shook at my speech. It was the truth. "One of me. Refreshment?"
"Look at you. The Cabal Emperor isn't even Cabal anymore. Right?"
Book: Confessions - Entry VII
The robotic facsimiles he manufactures are eerily like him—or like the Calus I remember; I have the surest feeling that his true form is no longer the Emperor I knew. Perhaps he is just a mouth now, smiling, laughing, eating what it fancies...

Then in Lightfall, he was shown to just be fat and decrepit
Calusfat.jpg
And got transformed into a generic big cabal with some new armor.

That was a retcon. They didn't imply he was the only one to survive. They outright said that Rasputin was 'THE' warmind, singular. D1 was explicit in its descriptions of the warminds, plural, that existed in and out of the Sol system. They retconned them into being "subminds", nothing more than extensions of Rasputin. Out of all the things they fucked up lore wise, the warminds still frustrates me.
I don't think its a retcon i think it's them leaving it open regarding what they wanna do with warminds going forward from d1
Bungie didn't know what they were doing or building towards. It's evident by how this whole 10 year shit show concluded. All the rewrites by people who hated the series didn't help either.

Amanda actually could've worked with decent writing since it was implied that she has some sort of romance with Crow (if I recall correctly) who was also resurrected as a Guardian. So we could've seen love story through reincarnation or potentially some dramatic moments like new Amanda having no feelings for Crow and him coping about it especially in the contrast with last villain from Star Wars DLC who grew hatred towards Guardians after seeing his mother resurrect and being cold towards him.

Some of the lore on Calus' size and form.
I dunno if it was intended that way from the start, but they could have been going for a Wizard of Oz "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" thing with Calus, putting illusions in front of the player as to what he truly looked like when his actual body was broken and decayed, either due to his hedonism, depression, or obsession with the Darkness. I don't even know if it's ever stated his psionic powers were his own or merely projections from the Psions under his command. Either way, it doesn't really bother me, it plays into the delusions of grandeur that make up his character.
