"Next Tuesday we will have a short amount of downtime and background maintenance for Destiny 2. There will be a small download alongside it, but this is not a large patch. We have a minor display fix for expansion pricing in the game. We do not want players, returning or new, to be mislead or confused by incorrect listings in the game, especially when they’re just getting back up to speed with Monument of Triumph and previous expansions."

This guy has acquired a pre-alpha D1 build from December 2013 and is apparently going to try making it playable. He's posted these screenshots so far:

I don't really have anywhere else to mention this, but almost eight years after it came out, I finally got the Mint Condition triumph, the one for completing the Rift Generator public event in the Dreaming City without it ever getting hit, and I managed it without setting up a huge group of players, just a couple of randos. It still took a lot of attempts, including a couple I was sure had succeeded, but I got it eventually.

Naturally, bubble was the way to go to keep the generator guarded. What really helped was the reworked Helm of Saint-14, which lets you extend the time on the bubble by getting kills and then throwing it, effectively giving me a bubble that could last about three times as long. In order to get my super back fast and clear waves quickly, I used the Tablet of Ruin and Wavesplitter. The artifact has a bunch of void perks that synergize well, as well as Elemental Siphon (more Void Breaches and super energy from collecting them), Harsh Refraction (trace rifles deal more damage to debuffed targets), and Elemental Supercharger (defeating exhausted targets grants more super energy). And since Wavesplitter has intrinsic anti-overload, every target it hits gets exhausted. At that point, four-piece Eutechnology was overkill, but hey, more explosions. It was basically just run around holding M1 and picking up as many orbs and Void Breaches as I could, then running back to the generator to refresh the bubble timer when I had a full fourteen stacks of the exotic buff or drop a new one (as long as there weren't any snipers up).

One thing I found out while playing was that the Saint-14 perk didn't want to work if I dropped a second bubble before the first disappeared, which fucked up a couple of attempts. After doing some testing in the firing range, I figured out that the buff timer and whether it can activate is tied to the first bubble you drop, and sticks with it until it disappears. So if that first bubble has no more throws available (you've already picked it up and thrown it twice), the game won't let you build up stacks of the buff, even if you just dropped a fresh bubble. The buff won't restart until you drop a new bubble or throw a fresh bubble once (since it will still have a charge left, that will restart the timer). I'd call that a bug, but not a very serious one; in regular gameplay, you're not likely to get your super back that quickly when you're competing with other players for kills, and even if you do, you're not likely to end up in a situation where you want to drop a second bubble before that first one expires.

It'd still probably be easier to just have a bunch of titans chaining bubbles, but hey, I got it done and I had some fun buildcrafting to try and figure out how to make it work.

The lightfall campaign has Calus in it so it can't be truly awful in my eyes. I've always loved his character and being able to finally fight him one on one after all this time was worth the weight
The problem was execution, as always. You had a memorable character that was built up since D2's launch, with mystery swirling around him because of how he was never seen. He was utterly different from every other Cabal we'd seen up to that point, reveling in hedonism instead of simply grinding us underfoot. As the years progressed, we could see how the Leviathan's glistening surface was nothing more than a facade for the rot within, and how his all-consuming desire to serve the Witness was causing him to abandon all he once held dear, including his daughter. On top of that, he was one of the few characters to have some plot interaction practically every year since he was introduced (the only exception being Shadowkeep), so he was constantly on players' minds.

And then in the actual campaign, there's very little interaction outside of the beginning and end, and all of it is overshadowed by the rest of the craptastic writing and characters and a plot that makes too little sense. And then when we finally get to see Calus in the flesh after years of waiting, it's at the absolute end of the campaign, he's killed off for good after a single fight, and any sense of a dramatic resolution to his and Caiatl's stories is quickly snuffed out by the worst MCU quip in the game.

I really have to wonder what the original idea for Lightfall was, because if the former devs weren't just blowing smoke, it had to have been better than what we got. Not like it could be that much worse, honestly.

Him becoming a disciple at the start soured me on the DLC's story. Maybe I'm crazy but if I were the Witness it doesn't make sense to make him a disciple until the very end as some act of desperation to gain access to the Veil or as some sort of joke. He comes off more as a crazed fanboy than someone of absolute force seeing as in Eater and Crown we're basically coming in to clean up his messes. Then you had the Menagerie's lore book which is just pure fanfiction from Calus that is him sucking off the Guardian and how awesome we are.

There's a good chance I missed a lot but it just didn't make sense to me how Calus was a disciple at the start and not at the end. Especially considering we killed Rhulk who was infinitely more imposing and would've wiped the floor with us had he not been underestimating and toying with us.

The problem in that case is that the process of Calus becoming a Disciple was part of seasonal storylines that weren't accessible any longer by the time Lightfall came out, and about all that remains is the Presage exotic mission and the Duality dungeon (and the latter is more an examination of Calus's mind and regrets). All of his actions were constantly trying to get the Witness to notice him and let him serve it, but without any of that years of buildup, it just comes out of nowhere. Hell, new players just playing through all the campaigns in order would have zero idea who Calus is because none of his story is in the game anymore, so why it's such a big deal when he shows up would be lost on them. And they wonder why it was so hard to get people into this game.

That said, I've seen more than a few people talk about how the Witness was indeed just using him as a means to an end and didn't really care one way or another whether he succeeded, almost setting him up to fail. If he'd succeeded in activating the Radial Mast to link up with the Veil, then it was all good. If he didn't but he captured the Veil, again, all good. But if he failed like he did, then the Witness already had a backup plan by using its link through our Ghost to establish its connection to the Veil. Either way, Calus was nothing more than an expendable pawn, and the tragedy is that he died not even realizing how little he actually mattered to it.

And then that tragic moment got undercut by fucking Nimbus. God, fucking Nimbus. The only positive of Destiny's demise is that there will never be any more Nimbus ever again.

If there's ever another Destiny title, I wouldn't mind if all of Lightfall got retconned. Just have the Witness able to enter the Traveller immediately, and our Guardian follows right after. That whole DLC and proceeding seasons were filler and killed off my interest in the game.

what annoys me is that they made calus moveset being absolute shit, like he just becomes generic cabal enemies after a certain health threshold, i still remember the many times he said he'd love to fight us only for him to do what? act like a fucking colossus? man, shit's gay... i mean it's the lightfall expac but still, shoulda given my bro cally some unique movesets.
I wish Bungo brought back all of Leviathan, the rotating encounters was a cool little gimmick and I knew the underbelly like the back of my hand.
i liked the menagerie, it's way better than this starhorse bullshit we have especially because of the loot.

the way destiny 2 is lazily written allows for you to explain why zavala has different voices with paracasual shit, just saying.
retconning the gay expansion is ultra fucking easy as well.

I was going to say, "While doing retcons, can we fix the Witness's design" but I barely remembered it and looked it up. I immediately burst into laughter, so forget that, I love it.
Pyramids.webp
This was awesome, an enigmatic, ominous fleet of paracausal entities/ships that appear to be the darkness equivalent of the Traveller, opposite to it in shape, color, and numbers. But you know what missing?
Destiny-2-The-Witness.jpg
A villain that is actually in control of everything while also not being the Winnower, invalidating 6 years of these pyramids ships, and looks like it was made by Pixar.

This is what pains me the most talking about any destiny anything that got removed from the game, its hard to talk about stuff like that when after all my praise and excitement has to be followed by "oh you can't play it anymore tho"

Do you mean dramatic resolution as in a better finale for their storylines in general or just a more dramatic resoultion in general cause i assumed after season of the haunted and duality that their stories were not gonna end in anyway but Caiatl/us putting Calus down for good cause i would kinda agree both ways but even being able to fight calus one on one as a last act is a good resolution for me. of course i would be talking very differently if D2 wasn't end of service

Yeah i miss Leviathan, i loved doing gauntlet and dogs with blueberries. With the derelict leviathan still being in the game via arena ops i don't think it would be that crazy to remake leviathan but set it in the derelict version. Maybe give Calus some new lines where he talks about how fucked up the gauntlet arena is or how the garden in the dogs encounter is now all dead and fucked up.

I like dares but menagerie was also great and basically the blueprint for all future 6 man pve activities

I don't think there is any reason needed to explain the different voices because you aren't supposed to question it lol. I think in universe everyone still hears Lance Reddick and not Keith David

People give the rise of nightmares sets shit but at least they fit the theme of "a whole civilization jammed into one body" in a much more unique way than the only evidence being smoke faces coming out of megamind

The latter. Yeah, we were always going to kill Calus in the end, he was too far gone to ever come back even if he wanted to, but just because you can see a conclusion coming doesn't mean you don't still want to see it play out properly. And in this case, it did not. Caiatl got a single line to reflect on the death of her father before fucking MCU quipping Nimbus shows up to be all "haha woo we did it wham kaboom zap to the extreme fistbump time!" It was so tonally jarring that it completely took me out of the moment and ruined what should have been a satisfying payoff for a years-long storyline.

In fact, I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of the Nimbus hatred comes from that scene alone. Pretty much every single comment after release was people complaining about how he ruined that moment. It's not like people were responding well to him in the first place given his clear creator's pet/barely disguised fetish status, but that really sealed his fate as one of the most hated characters in the series, if not the most hated.

i was looking at the comments and found this faggot, there is always niggers like this saying this typa shit but never sharing anything like some gay way to flex or whatever, if youtube wasn't gay i'd login and tell this faggot to kill himself.
The whole D2 datamining community is full of fags like this gatekeeping their work but then bragging about it and posting pictures just to stroke their egos. There was a big thing a couple years back about a D1 server emulator and it was closed in their inner circle and they just posted some videos of it and then nothing came of it. There is a map viewer called Alkahest that the rustfag dev refuses to update (after having blocked any sort of screenshot functionality) because of muh datamining, but was posting pictures of Shard and what looks like ingame rendering on his bluesky account. There was even a pre-bl D2 emulator way back in 2020 that they posted videos of on Twitter and then never released anything.

Edit: Looks like the Alkahest fag has gone back on his morals after the game was announced to be dead

Calus' problem is that he went from an interesting character to an incompetent Saturday morning cartoon villain in Lightfall, right down to his boss bullying him around in cutscenes like he was Starscream or something. (Which went nowhere btw, you'd think it was to set up an attempted betrayal of the Witness but nope, you just kill him and that's it.)

In fact, EVERYTHING in Lightfall felt like it became a retarded cartoon. Why they chose to do this in the expansion right before the dramatic ending of the story will always be a mystery to me.

I will always maintain that Lightfall should have taken place on Earth and should have been a Halo Reach type thing where shit is going down and everything is getting fucked up. Basically Red War on steroids. That way you could've also had Amanda get killed in a way that wasn't completely retarded and out of nowhere.

As many have pointed out (including @Blackstar above), Lightfall is such a filler story that you can literally delete everything but the first and last cutscene (the Witness shows up, makes the portal into the Traveler, and voops inside) and nothing would really be lost in the grand scheme of things. You're basically sent on an ultimately meaningless fetch quest to try and stop an poorly explained MacGuffin from falling into enemy hands, and you fail because the Witness was already three steps ahead of you and had contingencies in place for any outcome. The conclusion was already determined, so you basically just wasted your time accomplishing nothing. Thus, if they removed Neomuna, the Veil, and the entire Lightfall campaign from the story, the outcome still would have been the same.

Again, I really want to know what their original plans were for Lightfall and how it ended up becoming such a trainwreck after the much better Witch Queen expansion. It was like every single writer finished up WQ and then immediately bashed their skulls in with a hammer before shoveling out the cringiest Marvel drek possible.

Concept art and old internal slideshow leaks seem to indicate a patrol in the last city and plans for a clan space station, which exists as far back as shadowkeep in the cubemaps (along with a fully rebuilt and updated d1 tower with brand new art)

You can find a lot of other interesting things in the shadowkeep cubemaps, like Io when it was still mars, Siva logo on Exodus Black, a bunch of unfinished locations, d1 leftovers.
