I have a friend who is is sort of on the outskirts of the deaf community and they are such a white knight when it comes to deafness. It's hilarious.

I always act the part with them just to witness their exceptionalness.

An example is when I brought gene hacking with fertilized eggs and the societal implications with the deaf community since parents would rather have a non deaf child than a deaf one. Suffice to say, they lost their mind.

Edit: Here's a comment from the reddit thread
My niece is deaf, and when my sister finally got her cochlear implants approved she posted it on Facebook and got a TON of fucking death threats from people in the deaf community.

Look, there's nothing wrong with being proud of who you are, but if you're crossing the street and can't hear the blaring horn of a semi-truck coming that won't be able to stop in time, THAT IS A DISABILITY.

Yeah, cult is a good way to put it. And people trying to be politically correct won't tell them they're being assholes like they would with other assholes, because you feel bad for these people, why kick them when they're already down? But obviously that's bad, because they're so far up their own asses they're preventing kids from getting effectively cured, or at least have their lives made easier and more comfortable.

Deaf people aren't an ethnic group or social class. They're a particular variety of disabled. They are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act in the US. The fact that they have their own culture makes sense, and is a good thing. It's based on shared experience. But when that culture becomes protective of the disability they have in common, and they start pushing it on other people, it goes from ok to damaging.

The problem now is there's too much precedent for going along with any group's nonsense. Although they're a bit of a wildcard in the progressive stack, like I'm pretty sure a deaf white person who says something racist about a black person is going to get as much trouble as anyone else. The fact that deaf people realize they are "blunt" and don't care is annoying. You're not blunt, you're being a dick. Especially if you can't take people bluntly telling you that deafness is a disability and a bad thing.

My knowledge of the deaf community is lacking.

However, the first impression I got was when I watched scrubs and there was this deaf dad who took his son to the hospital for something unrelated (I Think) and he flipped out when they tried to suggest his son get cochlear implants.

I get it from a father trying to find a way to connect with his son but it was surprising for me to see a dad actually hesitate, leaning toward choosing his flesh and blood live with a crippling disability like being deaf.

Oooh, Lordy, I just watched a documentary about Cochlear implants for my sign class yesterday. That was pretty fucking insightful to how pissy some Deaf folks get

It was about two different families considering the implant- one candidate was a 5-year-old girl from a Deaf family, and the other was a 1-year-old(?) boy from a hearing family. The latter's mother got some serious scorn for wanting him not to struggle in life, because he wouldn't be able to develop a Deaf identity and thinking she had an issue with Deaf people.
Meanwhile, the former's family eventually got her to be okay with being deaf/Deaf. Never mind the fact she's already expressed desire to hear and to be in both worlds, gotta keep that Deaf identity somehow!

I am curious what became of those kids, too- the documentary was from 2000, after all.

In general, the more insular and exclusionary a community becomes, the weirder the beliefs held by its members become. It makes sense the Deaf community would have some strange facets, given that they have a language all their own. Though the amount of bitterness held towards people with non-deaf disabilities certainly surprised me.

I’m curious about the “switched at birth” element of this group, fandom drama is always entertaining.

We need to be aware that babies that are born deaf are being told they will be fixed if they get a cochlear implant. This involves a major surgery and is unnecessary. The baby is not "broken" and surgery isn't necessary. Please sign this petition to ban surgical procedures on children that are born Deaf and give them their right to choose for themselves. Being Deaf is a priviledge not a disease.

How the heck is being deaf a priviledge? I wonder, does the Deaf Community ever get pissy about not being allowed to serve in the military (for obvious reasons)?

Knowing how tumblr kids are, it makes me wonder if some of them have tried putting their headphones on at full blast for hours in a desperate bid to be more special.

Now that we've thoroughly discussed deaf CULTure and how stuck up and horrible the deaf people who participate in it can be, can anyone shed some light on possible reasons why they are the way they are?

ASL is hardly secret when basically every community college and college in the US teaches it. Even russell fucking greer can sign
I was saying they have a secret language in the same way chinese people in america have a secret language. I meant they can have a private conversation in front of a typical person and that person won't understand them. I was suggesting this creates a separation, not some weird conspiracy.

In High School, one of the people in my circle of friends was deaf. I don't think she was born that way, but she had some type of accident when she was a baby and it cost her most (if not all) of her ability to hear. She had some type of hearing aide that could be removed, and usually got by with reading lips (also I believe she could hear very high pitches, she had special phone alerts & such).

Anyway, one day my friend and I were hanging out with her, she was driving and an ambulance comes blazing down the road from behind. Cars start clearing way but my deaf friend just kept driving like everything was cool. I started telling her she had to pull into the median to let the ambulance pass, but she wasn't fucking getting the message whatsoever and almost killed us. I noticed after that she wasn't wearing her hearing aide and it turned into a full blown argument. This wasn't the first time either according to her mom, she had a tendency to do dumb shit like that. I get that having a disability isn't ideal, but it's imperative to be able to hear what's going on around you when you're driving.

A few years later when I was on break from Uni, I was getting coffee with a friend and we somehow end up talking about the deaf girl. Apparently she was kicked out of college because she kept refusing to wear her hearing aide, and since she couldn't hear anything it effected her grades negatively. She would go to the Administration and complain constantly that her grades were only bad because she couldn't hear, and they asked her why she wasn't wearing her hearing aid(s) while in class. She threw some tantrum about "ableism" and all that shit but ultimately they told her that if she didn't wear the hearing aides that she couldn't come back next semester... so she didn't. Why you would pay tuition just to not get anything in return, I have no idea. It was like she was intentionally trying to make life harder on herself for some fucked up reason.

I'm considered legally blind, even with corrective lenses my sight is nowhere near perfect. I have restrictions on my license and if I go up another couple numbers Im screwed because they don't make contacts in that strength. I'm not a candidate for lasix, but Im hoping that will change in the near future. All I can see without contacts is shadows and color blur, I can't imagine trying to function without them. I could, but my quality of life would be greatly reduced.

It's not the same thing as being deaf obviously, but why would you not utilize everything available to give yourself the best quality of life possible? So you can get pity points in the "Opreshun" Olympics?

If I remember correctly, Makaton is for British people with special needs, from what I've seen, while the Deaf community understood and recoginzed Makaton for their usefulness to help disabled children communicate, they also are disgruntled about them because hearing people tried to use Makaton method instead of British Sign Language on Deaf children.

I think they're ok as long as people are able to recognize both of them aren't the same thing.
Yeah Makaton is mainly for people with speical needs which means they can't communicate effectively with verbal language. I work with kids that can still respond to normal questions but use makaton to help explain what they want or need specifically. I guess it's a lot simpler than BSL as its in spoken word order, but I believe they share signs with each other (as in, makaton uses BSL signs, just not the grammar).

Audism, belief that the ability to hear makes one superior to those with hearing loss.

hahaha what the fuck is this self delusional bullshit

Of course being able to hear makes someone superior. A deaf person doesn't stop being a person but their fucking ability to perceive the world is at least 20% worse than a "normal" person's. I would say that having the ability to fucking hear music and talk to people without using your hands makes you superior to someone who can't do those things, from a quality of life standpoint.

Insecurity I assume.

Imagine being told and knowing your entire life that you’re different from everyone else and you won’t be able to have the same kind of experiences they have. That you won’t be able to do things that require hearing.

You get placed into different classes or schools, people deal with you differently than everyone else, and hell, you may even get bullied for it because kids love to pick on the odd one out.

You’d probably feel like shit about it. And by that point, you have a few options:

Learn to cope, seek help, and do the best you can despite your disability.

Wallow in self pity and close yourself off from the rest of the world.

Or, lash out at the people who supposedly wronged you or who you see as “better” for having something you lack. Do everything you can to make life a living hell for them and using your disability as a shield.

By the looks of things, the deaf community is a circlejerk formed by the third option with a dash of the second. And god forbid you do anything meaningful in your life, lest the rest of the community cuts you down or ostracizes you.

If you're at the point that you nearly killed people because of your own stupidly stubborn decisions you need to hang yourself tbqh

My brother outright REFUSED to wear his glasses when he drove for the longest time and totaled 3 cars because of it, and also managed to fracture one of his knees.

I remember when he first got his drivers license and wanted to drive to a family reunion I gladly accepted as I had been carting his fucking ass around for years. I quickly regretted it though, as he nearly hit every highway exit divider on the way there, and would get all pissy when I'd say something about it.

If you need to use something to function, then fucking use it.
