This is a very interesting thread, I will definitely keep my eye on this one.
I have always wondered about lip reading tho. I have heard that it's possible to understand what ppl are saying through only that but I have heard conflicting reports. I remember watching a yt video where some deaf girl said that it was pretty much impossible to lip read and challenged her viewers to understand what she was saying without sound(she was talking normally in the vid). I didn't understand shit if I tried to read lips, but is it wrong to assume that everyone can learn to read lips to some extent if they practice?

I remember being forced to watch a video from this community years ago of a mulism girl refusing ear surgery because she liked being deaf better for some reason.

I will find the video because I ran into this community years ago due to I am partially deaf and my mom dragged me to one that was parading around it would help pay for hearing aids because they costed a fuckton back then where I was.

They lied basically and it was just an attempt to get people to believe thier exceptionalism that being deaf was better by speaking and showing videos pushing this bullshit.

They have basically taken over most places involving any form of deaf help or awareness but sweet god for being deaf it sure didn't stop the autism from spreading.

A major issue with vocalizations is that they're primarily made with the vocal chords, not the lips. The lips just help define the sound more. You can totally sorta-talk without lips.

I remember back in the day, they developed new voice-rec technology intended to teach people with hearing difficulties how to speak clearly.

I can only imagine that these assholes would consider this the utter destruction of their culture.

After reading this thread a bit, the fact that there are deaf people who try to argue against their deafness being a disability is pretty fucking mindblowing. What, you're telling me that if given the chance you wouldn't want to hear?

In all honesty though, I had no idea that the deaf community was this toxic.

This was one of the wildest reads I had on here, no joke.
I am hard of hearing since I was 3, and it is absolute shit to deal with, so why someone would think it's good/desireable in any way, is beyond me.

Word. Even coming from someone who used to associate with the deaf Deaf community, this thread is nothing short of shocking and depressing. I knew there were controversies with cochlear implants and Deaf identity, but man, is it such an ugly side of a supposedly welcoming community. Why isn't there much accountability? Why aren't there more deaf/Deaf/hard of hearing people standing up to the toxicity of this community?

To the Kiwis who've had rough experiences with Deaf people, Oh my god, I'm so sorry. :heart-empty:

My brother outright REFUSED to wear his glasses when he drove for the longest time and totaled 3 cars because of it, and also managed to fracture one of his knees.

I remember when he first got his drivers license and wanted to drive to a family reunion I gladly accepted as I had been carting his fucking ass around for years. I quickly regretted it though, as he nearly hit every highway exit divider on the way there, and would get all pissy when I'd say something about it.

If you need to use something to function, then fucking use it.
:offtopic: I need corrective lenses for a driving permit. No offense, but your brother sounds like a moron.

It's like they just won't listen, amirite?

That was terrible. I'll show myself out...

Oh, he absolutely IS and no offense taken. He didn't want to wear them because he didn't want to look like a nerd.

He's also a hardcore wigger and loves to talk about "black culture".

My niece is deaf, and when my sister finally got her cochlear implants approved she posted it on Facebook and got a TON of fucking death threats from people in the deaf community.

Look, there's nothing wrong with being proud of who you are, but if you're crossing the street and can't hear the blaring horn of a semi-truck coming that won't be able to stop in time, THAT IS A DISABILITY.
And this is where I would draw the line as well, these people are just assholes to even bother your niece.

If you want a completely insane video from a member of the Deaf community, look no further than infamous DJ Deaf Joey, who starts the video innocently enough signing about his great grandmother's death, which turns full on serial killer as he signs that he has acquired the corpse and then proceeds to not only film her desiccated body...but also decides to give it a vigorous tongue bath. Then upload it to Youtube.

That being said, you shouldn't watch this.

For some reason, people commented defending or endorsing this.

Sorry if I'm late, but I'm pretty sure that's not a real corpse. This comment put it pretty well:

You wouldn't ask a handsome man like me to wear glasses? It'd be a crime against nature!

In fact, that's what this whole thing reminds me of. Something that came straight out of a Simpsons episode.

I don't get it. If they're Deaf and not deaf, how are you supposed to convey that you understand the distinction in person? I mean you could just verbally say the word with a stronger inflection on the D.

Oh wait.

If you've never heard the sound of another person in distress, it might be a lot harder to develop any kind of empathy. Maybe that's why so many deaf people are self-centered assholes. :\

I was already vaguely aware of this community thanks to a family member taking a few classes at a school for the deaf and blind, and at fist I wondered why I hadn't seen any crossovers with SJWs, but then I realized they're not particularly useful to sjw crusades because they're only concerned with themselves; every other minority can fuck off and die.

W-wigger? Does that mean he also tries to shape his hair like a black man's?
My condolences. If he was in my family, mom would've tried to prevent him from even listening to Hip Hop. If he was my sibling.

I remember he once "borrowed" my Weird Al "Straight Outta Lindenwood" CD and would listen to the Amish Paradise song at max volume in his room because our Mom wouldn't let him get real rap music.

It was pretty funny.

Edit:
It was actually "Bad Hair Day".

Only rap songs (tolerated by totalitarian Dictator mom)
1. The Bloodhound Gang CD,
2. Timbaland's Shock Value- any cd with even Ne Yo's brown face will raise eyebrows by her fiance. Hope your bro likes 60 year olds saying "nigger" occasionally.
