Exaggerated movements and expressions are really important in signing in general, to get the emotion of the song across we would use our tone of voice but obviously you cant do that in sign, so you do that instead.

Had some deaf friends in my youth. When "singing" in sign language, there isn't a whole lot you can do to distinguish between performing a song and just signing the words, so interpreters will use exaggerated, flowing gestures to differentiate it from normal conversation.

Also, facial expressions do a lot to convey tone in sign languages- in the same manner you would use your voice to communicate tone when speaking. That's why a lot of concert interpreters have intense facial expressions like they're jostling to take a shit.

There's about 300 sign languages used around the world, not counting manual communication like SEE (Signed Exact English). I wonder if different sign language communities are as retarded as the ASL community?

I'm so glad humans have this wonderful instinct to bring everybody else down with them! Where would we be if people tried to better themselves, rather then hobble others to compensate? A better world with far less drama, and I'd die without my drama :(

I was just reminded of a drama over a certified Deaf (Yes, Deaf.) ASL interpreter for making too-intense facial expression. There was a very black and white debate within the ASL community.

Dat tongue works.

Back when Nelson Mandela died, they had an ASL interpreter at his memorial, who infamously is known for just flailing his hands around meaninglessly because he didn't actually know sign language.
Most of the world looked at it and laughed because of the supreme incompetence that must have led to it happening, but the deaf community saw it and screeched. For them, the guy flipping his fingers around was tantamount to blackface, and there was a huge uproar on twitter over it.

Was the district expected to provide an interpreter for her as a disability accommodation?
Also kinda surprised a deaf person would be going to a regular school--don't they usually go to special schools where everything is taught in ASL?

Private school with full disability provisions. Shit still has to go through district for transportation in NY, because nothing up here is allowed to make anything remotely resemble sense.

Nothing worse than uppity douches who want to be treated equal but purposefully base their whole personality around their handicap instead of not letting it define them.

I never considered deaf people to even have a community. What's next, blind people online communities? They can't even fucking SEE posts. What about armless people, what do they do, type with their feet or some shit? Or perhaps we got a community of people who suffer from infertility or erectile dysfunction? THAT must be just...depressing.

How many disabilities have a gathering of people who suffer the same shit and call it something to be proud of? How the hell do you have pride in being genetically broken?

...Have you perhaps ever heard (tee hee) of screen readers and voice-to-type software?

I guess tribalism, and also deafness isn't as debilitating as some other disabilities so those idiots feel comfortable as they are(nothing wrong with that) and think everyone else should be too.

What does this mean!? Is Deaf a race now? Are they saying that blacks have a harder time in live because of genetics? Is having a black baby hard mode on the game of Life? I'm sure they said this to sound progressive, but it sounds so racist.
When you accidentally get too woke and imply being black is a disability.

To be honest I don't even know why deaf people need to stand out. For the most part they've not really had any much of an issue functioning, and not having to hear some old lady's stupid bullshit for an hour is pretty neat.

If they're trying to vouch for some weird acceptance thing like fat people do it'd probably be a problem. Good thing we can talk shit to them.

It's not a perfect technology. Even with screen readers and such I'm sure navigating the web would be a nightmare.

Getting off topic here, but there's a lot of fantastic technology for blind people, especially from Microsoft who have been working on accessibility since forever (but have recently been doubling down on it with recent AI breakthroughs)

Although I agree that I really didn't expect a deaf community to exist. I imagined self-help stuff and learning to deal with the disability existed, but, I didn't expect this crazy cult shit.

IIRC that guy was actually schizophrenic. I guess it's hard for deaf people to understand that there are people with disabilities out there.
