A unified universe in which to have stories take place is actually a really enjoyable thing. Everybody has had those talks with friends about how Goku could totally kick Superman's ass, or how Batman would lose to Spiderman. Instead of having superhero stories happen in a vacuum, they happen all in the same world, and is a fun way of saying that while Iron Man is taking care of some baddies in Asia, the Cap is dealing with people in South America. It gives a sense of a huge world where things are connected. The MCU is really an oddity in how it was constructed. The "Big Two" are stereotyped as only producing superheros but their comic universes are more a product of trying to add context to their publishing history, both as a marketing gimmick to get people to buy different titles and stringing together practically every genre under the sun to create settings where any kind of story can fit.
It's a lot of fun, and as someone who loves reading I want books with large worlds.
