A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Jesus Christ. I had never watched the original video because I dislike gore but to assess the cover up aspect I need to. This is really a blatant whitewash, undeniably. The woman conducting this initial enquiry has to be complicit or the most lazy investigator ever. At the least, she should be suspended from her job.

Horrible fucking injury as well.

EDIT: Jesus, I'm still watching and it's getting worse and worse. How fucking long was it before the poor lad gets any actual medical attention? They're just frog-marching him along the street for ages with a perforated jaw and then keeping him sat in a shop doorway as he continues to bleed everywhere. And then they refuse to release the footage and the mother having to go out personally to find witnesses - whose testimony was then ignored by the police. And they wouldn't even take a statement from the victim. And then it gets worse from there! That's a video worth watching. Thanks for sharing.

But I figure your process is probably to grab the original first and then create an archive link from it. Archive everything is the rule, but it doesn't need to be the primary link. And actually if archive.ph ever goes tits up, then we'll actually have no way of seeing what the original link even was, which may well still be valid.

Thankfully he was ok, but any kind of jaw injury like that should be IMMEDIATE blue light to A and E, regardless of how the person feels. There’s a LOT of vital plumbing in that area, and with the amount of blood you get from a head and neck Injury anyway, they had no way of knowing it had missed anything critical. The police are very lucky he didn’t bleed out, or die from that bit of railing having hit something very important .
If I was his mum, I’d be pushing for whatever ‘threat to life by deliberate neglect/blocking access to treatment’ sort of penalty I could. Any decent lawyer would jump at it. They’re lucky he wasn’t critically hurt. They have dodged a bullet here and heads should roll.
It’s terrible to see this stuff. Even people who were at odds with the police used to have a kind of respect for them, and this kind of thing tanks that.

If you check out the channel that video came from, Crimebodge - you will find plenty more blatant cover ups like that. The channel owner even had UK police discussing how much they hate him on their subreddit and another of their private forums.

Supposedly Oor Andy is saying he wants to go for a constituency that's very Reform leaning, so "when" he wins, he'll "prove" he can lead Labour to a victory over Reform (and thus cinch the leadership election). The level of hubris on display will lead to a spectacular show if he loses to Reform.

I’m not being a lazy/stubborn cunt not archiving, the archive sites always end up with me stuck in a captcha loop, it’s a pain in the arse. Could be because I’m always on mobile. I still try to do it every other link or so I post but no luck so far, so thanks to whoever’s doing it.

How surprising that they cover this awful event up and exonerate the useless cops involved, but openly tried to prosecute the cop that shot Chris Kaba for murder.

It's not a bad idea and honestly might be needed. But ultimately anywhere he goes is a Labour seat. It doesn't matter how Reform leaning, he's trying to step into shoes Labour currently occupies.

Also it's complete horse shit because they have held that place since 1983, even surviving the great Red Wall tumbling.
 
If Burnham stands in Makerfield I genuinely hope he loses for no other reason than how openly fucking corrupt it is that this twit and the Labour MP are treating constituency seats like music chairs in the game of ministerial pursuit. How is nobody in the media pointing out that Burnham is openly abandoning his duty as Mayor of Manchester to be an MP in a constituency he has no stake in or relationship with solely for ministerial ambitions and the MP of Makerfield is prematurely abandoning his responsibilities to assist in those ministerial ambitions. The people of Makerfield should give him a fat middle finger, I'd rather they voted Greens than Labour here. It blows me away how openly corrupt Labour are and how little the media ever calls them out for it.

Meanwhile spastics on Reddit and the Guardian can't get enough of reminding everybody the responsibility Farage has to his constituents.

It's just our system. I remember when they created a new constituency in Bristol, some fag immediately abandoned his role as Mayor of Lewisham to move across the country for a safe Labour seat. No fucks given.

Also, we had a "Metro Mayor" in the West of England - Dan Norris - who for brief period was simulataneously Mayor and an MP. He's now been arrested on suspicion of child sex offences. A story that I bet most of you never heard about until I mentioned it just now. Doesn't seem to have been mentioned as much as it might've been in the news....

I sort of get ‘if there’s an argument the judgement was prejudiced then the activist lawyer scum could sweep in and have the verdict vacated’, but I think just change the law so that they’re not able to do that, do whatever needs to be done so that sort of thing can’t happen.

Foreigners - if these are foreigners - that go to the UK and do something like this should face capital punishment in my view.

only if Reform run their local boy, Robert Kenyon (32%). If they try to parachute in some twat like Goodwin they won't get in. I'm on the fence about Restore fielding a candidate but we shall see.

One could conceal the names of the accused without banning full reporting. So clearly they're trying to suppress the the general backgrounds of the accused. Ethnicity, country of origin, something like that.
