Hmmm? A $20,000 bike crash with accompanying picture. What can we derive from this? From looking at the picture we see a standard hipster millennial. Safe bet is whatever insurance they are carrying is the minimal Obamacare plan off the exchange. Since she lives in the highest price area in the country and has the look of starving artist/hipster freelancer about her, I’m betting her premiums are heavily subsidized. So the actual costs of her plan is shielded from her. It’s free, so who cares thatit has a $12,000 deductible? Until you need it? And she went to an out of network hospital. And no the hospital does not have to agree to accept the carriers greatly reduced rates. The differential between out of network reimbursement and actual bill is where the other $8000 comes from. And yes this is actual costs of services and staff. Half of that was likely the imaging work and reads. They would have run full trauma protocols on her.
