there's so many times I can do the same basic combo before it gets repetitive.
I was starting to feel that way around chapter 3 too, but that's the point of the game where bosses start rewarding you for stance switching. I was stubborn and resisted it, and I'm now I'm at the end of the game and realising how much suffering could have been avoided.

Word of advice: you can get away with a single point in Pillar stance unless you really like it, but at least that much is pretty much mandatory for the Pagoda boss in Ch3. But start investing in Thrust stance by Ch4 and you'll eat somewhat less shit than I did.

Oh yeah I put a fuckton of points in thrust after seeing how much better it was than smash. Yeah it's about 20% less damage but it actually hits enemies and is pretty fast. I don't know if it's a bug but I couldn't do the continued light thrust attacks after the charge.

The distance on the light attack follow up can be finnicky. If you're not in the exact precise position after the thrust, it refuses to work.

Bosses start getting their own tricks to punish specific spells and moves too. I dunno how Yellow Loong reacts to thrust stance but holy shit he's a motherfucker if you've been relying on smash counters.

Now I'm on the (first) last boss and I bet thrust would be really useful, but I've got the ruyi jingubang (which has it's own stanceless moveset you used in the intro) and I don't wanna switch back. It seems to have a mix of the various abilities, but I have no idea what I'm doing

Went through the pagoda area, legitimately one of the worst area I remember playing recently. The boss in the end was at least unique. Tried to get the spell there and the game crashed. Something in that area really fucks with the game because I had multiple times it will just stop functioning for a second and then lag into the next scene. Don't think it's me playing on PS5 because the game was relatively smooth up until now. Bosses start getting easy now that I'm loaded with spells.

That was one of my favourite areas. Probably the most From-like bit, minus any elevators.

I'm playing on PS5 too and haven't had any issues. But it's an Unreal Engine game on PS5 so I know from experience that they get somewhat eepy and tucky-fuckered out after 5 or 6 hours so I reboot preventatively the moment I notice a stutter.

I'm also playing on Balanced settings, and I'm sure none of you idiots are dumb enough to be playing a soulslike on Quality mode, but I've heard it has particular issues in this game FYI.

Interesting. I haven't had a single crash. Figured it would be unstable as shit but it's been performing fantastic for a UE5 game. Dunno. Not playing on the PS5 tho.
The boss in the end was at least unique.
This nigger was not fun at all. He's not bad until he whips out the force grab then shoots you with the laser, depleting 90% of your health. I couldn't figure out the tell and definitely couldn't figure out how to dodge it as it seemed like he grabbed me every time. When I beat him, it was only because he did the grab when I had full health. Legitimately every death was because of the grab.

His hands glow gold during a little hop before the grab, but it can be hard to see if he's off-camera since he's so big. You can just roll away, though the timing is delayed since it's a grab so he'll get you if you're dodging like it's one of his other jumping stomps.
For these reasons I just rolled to get behind his ass every time he jumped. That means giving up free hits on the face weakpoint, but it also helps keep away from the fire moves and chant debuff (plus I was using smash stance which knocks him down a couple times anyway).

I really hate western liberal culture trying to tell how my Asian culture should work. I grew up watch Journey to the West with my family. Has a lot of epic fight scene, inspire Kaiju fights and many anime series, and a lot of Asian philosophy that I practice.

Okay back to the game:
If I was to say one negative thing about Journey to the West since I read the book when I was a kid, why did they make Zhu Bajie my favorite character 4'2 foot (Ethan Ralph height) by default.
Instead Zhu Bajie is over 11 foot tall and a big guy, and a total bad ass in the book.

I did not expect to enjoy this game as much as I am. I definitely agree that players miss out on a lot of context and character development if they're totally unfamiliar with the novel. I get why most Americans wouldn't know it well but it's also a bit surprising given that it's not some sort of esoteric, obscure work.

Also I watched a video on how to cheat to get infinite mana and basically no cooldown times so now some boss encounters aren't nearly as fucking aggravating as before. This is definitely getting patched but I'll finish a playthrough with it first.

I know nothing about the source material beneath the most surface level shit but the tiny pig is hilarious in how he's basically at odds with everyone and is constantly complaining.

Probably because he's your companion for a chunk of the game including multiple boss fights, so it'd be fucking annoying if he was constantly blocking the camera. Kind of the inverse of the "even humanoid bosses should be tall as fuck because it's more fun" Fromsoft philosophy. And maybe so it's less incongruous that he does fuck-all damage to enemies most of the time.

He does get a whole cutscene where he gets to be a beefman though so it's not like they were hoping you wouldn't notice.
Edit: oh, and it's the opposite when you need to fight him, then he's at least 11 feet in pigman form.

I don't know how I feel about this at the moment.

Here is the English voice cast for the game:

Most or all of the human/humanoid characters are voiced by Asians or Hapas. Most or all of the monkey or animal characters are voiced by what appear to be Caucasians/Whites. But at least there are no Blacks and everyone, both Asians and Whites are normal looking people with no rainbow hairs. I also think of anime and Japanese games where the majority of the cast are voiced by nepotistic White progressive leftists from Texas with a few token Asians and Blacks.

But it doesn't change anything for me. Fuck English dubs, always play the original voice acting for whatever game you're playing, in this case Chinese.

Honestly, this game shouldn't be as praised as it should be. It's approach to exploration and combat are very safe and not innovative in any way. The combat kinda sucks since 80 % of the time the combos are just light attacks with a variation of transformations and a heavy attack. The music, bosses and general presentation are great though.

Overall, I think this game is a bit better than Asura's wrath

In chapter 6, game is fine but a lot of the later bosses are pretty spongey. End of chapter 4 was probably the worse. Scorpionlord is hyper offensive and probably the hardest boss until now, the bird takes forever to actually start to fight and the boss of the stage is really fucked with hitboxes and constantly missing his legs (not to mention it took me a while to realize you can cancel his last phase with the unique item, which was the first time I got it before the stage end).

The end chapter animations are fantastic, worth all the hard effort by themselves.

Okay got to the last boss, don't know if I'll really do it. Elden Ring DLC really took the wind out of my sails for time waster final bosses and having 4 phases is absolutely retarded.
