I actually thought it would’ve been interesting for one of the big revelations to be that the Marleyan blood isn’t quite as pure as they would like to imagine, and that most of their population is also capable of turning into mindless Titans, something which Eren would exploit in the climax to destroy Marley from within as all of their military forces are anticipating an invasion from the sea.
That would require Isayama not wanting to rip off anything that isn't Marvel or Game of Thrones

Also making Eren more clever than the mess of a character he is in the end where fanboys view him as a patriot whose motives changed last minute or a super clever villain that is too deep for you to understand

All I’ve heard about what Eren was trying to do was what Lelouch was.

That sums Eren up so well, a mess of a character. Started off so simple too, just kill the Titans because they killed his mom and trap everyone behind walls.

Do you guys think Isayama actually had the ending planned out from the beginning to any degree? I find it difficult to believe he did.

No since he openly said he changed his plans due to the popularity of the anime.

Honestly whatever Isayama was going for could work only if he had the balls to treat Eren as a piece of shit instead of some being wishy washy about him.

That is very interesting. I wonder where he was going with it before...? I'd love to know his original plans. Maybe he'll reveal that later through interviews after the anime is over (unless he wants to recycle them for a sequel).

This has been discussed multiple times before, but I believe he either had the ending planned out, and had to change it at the last minute, or everything went according to plan, and the whole last arc is just one big giant trolling move.

I'm not sure which one it is, but part of me leans to the latter because he always kept saying he wanted to hurt his readers, and well, what better way to do that then to take the story that they love and utterly destroy it?

I remember that quote. I only took it half seriously until I finished the manga but he wasn't kidding lol

Isayama, what a man you are.

In all seriousness, I think it's probably a bit of both. He had to change the ending at the last minute, and because he so frustrated, and angry by this he decided to purposefully tank his story as one last "fuck you" to everyone.

Okay, my grievances with AoT:
  • Eren just isn't an engaging character. He started off as a vengeful antihero only to get brutally sodomized by Levi, and his "good boy" arc with the Senpai Squad completely castrated his "KILL ALL TITANS REEE" persona. He became a damsel in distress and continued being one until Season 4 when Isayama perhaps realized his mistake(s) and began to overcompensate with "Look at Eren now, guys! He's totally cool and edgy now! He has a plan, and he's 10 steps ahead of everyone! He's like Batman!"
  • I'm not really sold on Levi's character. This guy started off as a sewer rat shunned by the outside world and then magically became an upstanding protector of humanity because a titan killed his 2 sewer rat friends. To a downtrodden guy like him, why does this suddenly redeem everyone inside the walls? I would've expected Levi to turn out way more selfish and amoral, like Kenny.
  • Zeke also doesn't feel realistic. He devised a convoluted galaxy-brained horseshit plan for the sake of an end goal that pretty much amounts to "guess we'll just die!". Seriously, dude? How the fuck does this even motivate someone? It's also pretty sad that he inherited the ideology from a sleazebag whose wife killed herself and their kid because of his lies.
  • Pieck stole the show when she "redpilled" Gabi on how Marley doesn't a give a shit about their honorary larp and will dispose of them as soon as they outlive their usefulness. This was completely ruined maybe 5 minutes later in the same episode when she was like "actually I may not trust Marley but I do trust the people we've been fighting alongside, teehee!". Bitch, that doesn't even make sense. Why does Isayama pull this kind of shit?
  • Jean is a massive faggot. "I'm sorry I kicked you Gabi. Are you okay? I totally understand why you killed Sasha, don't worry about it. Water under the bridge. Reiner, you're not getting any apologies. You killed my buttbuddy Marco, that I won't forgive."
  • Annie also has the Zeke Syndrome wherein everything she undertakes is for a shitty end goal, i.e returning home to her abusive stepfather despite meeting numerous people on her mission that treated her far better than he ever did. She had every reason to suffer the same dilemma as Reiner and end up with Hitch actually be an interesting character, but Isayama decided to be lazy instead.
  • Mikasa is by far the most flat, irritating, trashpile of a character.
  • Ymir's reason for defecting was painfully retarded.
  • Even in Season 4 Armin can't throw a decent punch and it's pathetic.
  • Reiner, despite his flaws, is the main character as far as I'm concerned. My main gripe with him is how much shit he takes from Porco despite owing him nothing. Marcel sabotaged Porco, felt guilty about getting Reiner drafted, and then died saving Reiner from Ymir. All of that is on Marcel. The Marley Arc should've focused less on Reiner's relationship with the warrior unit (because no one cares about that shit) and more on his flashbacks from Paradis.
In spite of all this, I still think it's an interesting show overall with lots of missed opportunities.

If I could just add my own thoughts:
  • Connie's fine the way he is. I think him staying the same is actually nice in comparison to the rest of the cast.
  • Kenny is the best character in the entire series.
  • I really wish we got to see the average life of the Paradisers more. I was more interested in how their society functioned, and how they lived day-by-day than I was with the mystery of the titans.
  • Marco is nothing but wasted potential and I'm mad that the fan theory of him actually being a titan-shifter wasn't canon.
  • There's enough material already in the series to have Erwin be the villain. You don't have to change or add anything to make a decent rewrite where that's the case.
  • I am convinced that Kuchel's name was actually supposed to be "Rachel", and Isayama or one of the editors, or typists just fucked up the spelling.

I forgot about Eren being a damsel in distress for so long, in fact I don't think he ever even won any fights until season 4. That was pretty stupid.

Also, Armin socks Eren good in the end, so I think he can throw a decent punch actually.

Agreed. Connie, albeit simple, is a pretty relatable character and this actually made his Sakuga treatment way more exciting to see than Mikasa's. He definitely has wasted potential, but he's written just well enough that I don't have any major gripes. Kenny felt a bit cryptic at times and he's done some horrific shit, but he was definitely an entertaining character.

I remember this, but it was just one punch that caught Eren off guard (because of the somber atmosphere), compared to the biblical ass-whooping he got earlier without getting in a single hit, in a fight Armin himself started. It would've been nice to see Armin at least hold his own in an actual fight. I guess we'll see if the anime does anything different.

I feel I don't make fun the side of the fandom that sucks Isayama's dick enough because this thread is just impressive for defending the worst line that even Isayama hated

I get what the author was trying to have Armin communicate, he just wrote it in the most sloppy and provocative way to be edgy and spark conversation. It's like Isayama was trying--and failing--to use Armin to bridge the two sides of the fanbase.

Nobody who was against the planetary genocide plan before is going to suddenly be like "oh yeah, that's fair". All he really managed to do was make people who did support Eren's plan kind of hate him too.

So good job, I guess.

Have you ever seen such a level of author worship like this before?
I have seen one Golgo 13 fanboy webpage who's author worship still worse than the Isayama fanboys. The autistic motherfucker had zero awareness of by describing how perfectly awesome Golgo 13. He unintentionally listed how and why Goglo 13 is the single biggest anime/manga Gary Stu there was. Although that was ages ago and I can't even remember whether I read that webpage before or after Isayama started AoT.

I don’t think he was, it was more to make Eren this tragic good boy who was doing things for his friends and not the disgusting retarded lunatic he actually is.

The fanbase in Japan is more united than the American fanbase which Isayama really doesn’t give that much of a shit about
