Do you guys think Isayama actually had the ending planned out from the beginning to any degree? I find it difficult to believe he did.
Not a fucking Chance.

Edit : Well, that depends on what you mean by planned I guess, Do it think he had something planned say..20 chapters before hand? Probably.

Did he have this shit planned out from Chapter 1? Not a single chance in fucking hell.

I don’t think he was, it was more to make Eren this tragic good boy who was doing things for his friends and not the disgusting retarded lunatic he actually is.

The fanbase in Japan is more united than the American fanbase which Isayama really doesn’t give that much of a shit about
It's hard to make him seem tragic when he reveals he killed his own mom, only cares about flattening the earth, etc in the very same chapter. They gave him too many motives, his friends seem like after an afterthought.

Even when he's explaining his plan to Armin, he's asked, "so you did everything for us?", and Eren ignores the question. He then stands up and says, "let's talk about Ymir." Which, to me thinking now, is more like a tacit "no" to Armin's question. Or at least "not completely".

I gotta say, as much of a clusterfuck as AoT became it's really dense and there's a lot to chew on, so to speak. It just kinda tastes like shit. It's interesting to dissect and re-read at any rate. I've read the last few chapters like half a dozen times, which I've never done before for a manga. I keep re-analyzing it.

I miss when villains could just be villains, and not be forced to have tragic backstories, or secretly turn out to be good guys. Or at the very least, not have them dwell on their backstories, and actually feel bad about what they're doing.

I can only think of one villain in modern fiction to be able to pull this off, and off well, and that's Micah from RDR2. Sure, it's not perfect, but it works, and was refreshing to see.

The thing is that he actually was tragic if you just looked at his character from start to finish. We've said this more than other thing in this entire thread: Eren has more than enough shit to make him a tragic character. The only problem is that the story fucking ignores it for no fucking reason.

Real talk here, Eren just needed one line of dialogue to fix this, and this isn't even me trying to dunk of Levi here when I write this. This could've actually been a nice callback, and have showed just how horrible the series' constant use of violence to solve problems is.

Eren: "Captain, you once said that some people just need a lesson in pain and a good beating. Turns out it's the whole world needs it."

It's cheesy af, but it would've gotten the point across way more than what happened in the actual series.

I guess the burden of the Founder's abilities warping him is tragic, but isn't that what he sought?

And yeah, that sounds cheesy but I think it might actually work with some cool paneling.

No, I meant Eren's life in general is tragic. He's born with an innate bloodlust and lack of empathy that could've been dealt with if he wasn't traumatized left, and right, and constantly used, and treated as nothing more than a dangerous weapon.

I hate the people who shit on Mikasa, Armin, and the rest of SC, but they do have a very good point when they say that they fucked up big time by not at least acknowledging Eren's depression, and other obvious problems.

Honestly the issue with Eren as a villain is due to the fact he is the main character and Isayama did not know what to really do with him. When he did, he didn't dedicate what Eren could be whether he was someone who had good intentions all along or an evil bastard. Like Isayama can sort of handle villains well (since I personally think he does good when writing other villains like Zeke Daddy Issues included, the Warrior trio, Floch, and Kenny) yet Eren sucks due to being a zig-zag of ideas that aren't really given any dedication.

Honestly Eren could've easily been fixed in terms of writing with a few simple changes:

1. Commit to the idea of him being an unhinged petty psychopath for his motives. Like while we meme the incel shit, it still is canon Eren committed omnicide because of the fact the world didn't look like a storybook.

2. Have the characters acknowledge that Eren is a fucking monster and not think he's an extremist helping them since they are aware Eren screwed up the multiple chances they had for peace with fucking off after the forum, committing to Zeke's plan, and the Liberio attack.

3. Above but them acknowledging their own failure in not paying attention to Eren's rather unhealthy attitude.

Like these are not even big changes at all.

Before he made contact with Historia I don't think he had shown that bloodlust except toward Titans, same for lack of empathy. I remember one OVA showing Jean being just a huge fucking prick to his mom, and Eren was the only one who told him he should be nicer to her. Not sure those side stories are canon though.

He fucking stabbed two grown men to death when he was eight, and literally got aroused by the thought of worldwide genocide when he was a teenager.

He's got issues, and I wish people, and frankly, the series itself, would remember that.

Didn't he do that to save Mikasa or something? IIRC, it wasn't just a random, pointless joykill.

As for the, uh, arousal, was that before he flipped his shit after touching Historia?

Dude, he was eight. Yeah, they deserved, but still. A normal child shouldn't be screaming like a lunatic as he stabs two grown-ass men to death with a broom.

As for the arousal thing, who cares if it was before or after he touched Historia? All that matters is that it happened. I'm tired of people trying to make excuses for this kid. He was fucked up from the moment he was born and everyone in-series and out seems to forget that despite it being blatantly fucking obvious.

The first point is pretty weak, but yeah, retroactively they framed him as insane from day 1 (when he's having that flashback of being born). I just don't think the signs were there early on. Unsurprisingly, he's inconsistently portrayed.

A little chat I have with some relatives about the ending of Game of Thrones and how the cripple kid became the king in the end really made me believe that Isayama took the Path thing straight out of the show....

It's the same fucking power with the one the cripple kid has, wasn't it?

I've never seen GoT, but given how much AoT has copied other Western media, I wouldn't doubt it.

I’ve never made that connection before, but you’re totally right, it’s an almost identical system for time/causality shenanigans that erodes the user’s humanity with its godlike extratemporal perspective.

What's more, with Bran's power (just remembered the name) he could have the ability to learn or even change the past. And yet he didn't used it and just let things happened even with thousands suffering or die. People were asking if this was his intention from the start, to allow himself become the new King

And this is where I think Isayama took his inspiration for the last parts of the series, but he made it even more stupid by making Eren's Incel Rage as the reason for him not changing the past

I dunno how they did it in the show, but in the books it’s heavily implied that Bran isn’t really Bran anymore, but was absorbed into the Three Eyed Crow/Weirwood hivemind and became its new human body. At this point he basically becomes like Dr Manhattan - mere thousands of human lives are beneath the concern of an earthly deity.

The end of Bleach was maybe the most rushed, incoherent thing ever. I didn't even know what the hell was going on, and worst of all, it was boring.
Wasn't that just Shonen Jump giving Bleach the axe and telling Kubo to wrap it up? Surely the anime will give the anime the love Thousand Year Blood War deserves and won't lead to more shipping centered desires for AOEs...right?

And how would they have dealt with that? It's not like therapy would make a difference when you're dealing with the possible end of humanity. If anything, you'd be called out for taking away a potential asset away.
You're making the assumption all fictionel male children are 21th Century white eunuched American.
Isn't that what Eren's fanboys already do?
