The reviews couldn’t even touch the tip of the iceberg in regards to how eccentric this series is.

I suggest you watch the old ovas too, if you do have time, after you're done with stardust, before you move to diamond is unbreakable.
I think the final battle is better in those.

Having never watched the original OVA series, I am really, really loving the new Legend of the Galactic Heroes TV remake, I binged through all the available episodes in one sitting!

This anime season has been very strong with shows like Golden Kamuy (1st episode was neat, will watch more), BnHA, Megalo Box and the new LOGH series, I hope next season can match it.

One Piece and Hunter x Hunter 2011 are both outstanding, the 1st has a really, really vast world with unpredictable possibilities. The latter has the edge in terms of pacing and animation quality, and the Chimera Ant arc in particular is a fantastic deconstruction of typical DBZ villains, which I think your friend will dig.

Both of them have somewhat slow starts, as all Shonen anime does.

HxH is a very, very meticulous series that encourages the viewer to microanalyze with the characters, it's also can be a very ruthless and violent series for a shonen, so be warned if you're giving it to your nephew or something, I think this would be a decently representative fight:

It gets far, far more involved strategy-wise, because the power system is very intricate with a lot of depth to it, and the fights are mostly life-or-death affairs. Be warned that this series is nicknamed Hiatus x Hiatus.. because of.. hiatuses lol, but the series is incredibly successful despite its publication issues, so there's no doubt that the anime will return once enough manga material builds up.

One Piece is a more adventure-focused series with a focus on humor, exploration (and eventually world politics), but it has a lot of DBZ influenced-moments in there too, this is the 1st fight that got really involving IMO, don't worry, there will be villains with far more impressive powers later on, the animation gets better as it goes too:

Seven Deadly Sins is one of those series' that are enjoyable enough that I can look past the ecchi shit. They actually use it sometimes creatively, like that one fight in the forest in season 1.

not really from the powerlevel craze, since the protagonist is op and only loses 3 times in the Whole series, but I Always like to suggest fist of the North star, since it's old and not many people have seen it. So I say go for it.

Fist of the North Star is so good. It's a shonen that almost reads like a seinen. I think of any character in the series the most legitimately tragic one was Juza.
