Guess I can't recommend Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro because it's got a goofy look to it, but it's about a demon who eats mysteries (you know who the killer is, but the fun is figuring out how the crime was committed) and is played by the sexy Takehito Koyasu. I like the design of Neuro, makes me think of Yami Yugi but if he was a legit demon who eats people's souls.

I fondly remember that one. The protagonist was all but in name an avatar of Tzeentch. The show's opening theme is pretty catchy.

It's by the band Nightmare, who did the first opening and ending songs of Death Note as well as the opening song of Claymore.

Also worth noting that people will say go with Brotherhood since it's the fuller story. The 2003 anime went its own separate way by the halfway point, but it's notably a darker storyline than the original manga at times. The 2003 version also has less comedic moments compared to Brotherhood, which I think is why it's rather darker in nature.
This. I highly recommend giving FMA another chance, especially the 2003 anime as it is considerably darker than Brotherhood. There are still funny moments, of course, but it’s nowhere near as comedy-riddled as Brotherhood (in which I personally found the vast majority of the humor off-putting and forced). The villains are also handled a hell of a lot better in the 2003 anime and aren’t one-dimensional “evil for the sake of being evil” drones. There are some particularly powerful scenes - mostly character deaths.

Personally while 2003 is darker and I can respect it made it's own creative decisions, but at the same time there was a lot of weird decisions or filler that really felt offputting like that episode with the cat burglar and the "Fake Elrics" as well as making Envy into a boring edgelord and the 2003-only villains were really silly for my liking in terms of it's writing. But 2003 does excel in handling Lust well by making her have more depth.

Brotherhood's biggest issue is probably the first 13 episodes as it tries to rush through the stuff already covered in 2003 so it feels weak at first, it noticeably improves afterwards even if there are some comedic moments that feel off-putting.

The 2003 one is the only one I've seen.

The trouble for me was I couldn't decide whether to read the original manga first or watch Brotherhood, since one will spoil the other, but on top of that I also had felt a sense of emotional closure after the end of the 2003 series and it's movie, like I had said "farewell" to Fullmetal as a franchise, then all of a sudden it came back in a way that felt too soon.

It's the same reason I've yet to get around to reading Trigun's original manga, even if stuff was left open the end of the TV series felt satisfying in an emotional way (Trigun has one of my favorite last episodes of any anime)

Still, enough time has passed that I definitely to get back into Fullmetal someday.

like that episode with the cat burglar

I liked that episode :/

See if it's trying to be funny then I don't mind it so much. It's when the style is there while also having serious moments that throw me off.

Take Fullmetal Alchemist for example, that dog-girl thing or whatever sounded insanely dark and depressing which is why I wanted to give it a shot, but then I start the show and Edward's making that sharp toothed face while spinning two people by the head around. It was so off-putting. It's like, how does this show go from this silly shit to that? I dunno, maybe I was being unfair but it didn't offer a good first impression.
You might like Big-O, it's creators were subcontractors for Batman the animated series. The whole series has a very heavy neo-noir aesthetic and it doesn't have any of the visual gags you listed above.

The 2003 one is the only one I've seen.

Having watched both versions, I will say that the two are different enough entities that you don't feel much overlap. Both stories place emphasis on different aspects of the story (2003 is more character driven while brotherhood is more plot focused). They also vary on what characters have more prominent roles in the story (ie. Bradley is a much bigger character in Brotherhood while Lust is the first casualty of the homuculi).

Highlights are definitely Seirei no Moribito, Escaflowne, and Sword of the Stranger. They sure don't make chinese cartoons like how they used to.

More recommendations for you all if interested. These two are old classics that you can thankfully find both subbed and dubbed playlists on YouTube to watch.
This show starts off in a dystopian world which harbors a creature that the government is adamant about keeping secured. However, their best efforts fail and they are left trying to scour quickly or else the being will escape outside of their city and into the irradiated world beyond.

A story revolving around two characters who were both brainwashed into becoming assassins for a crime syndicate. As the main character, Zwei, tries to figure out his past, he must kill repeatedly in his attempt to find an answer

Seconding Phantom : Requiem for the Phantom. The literal first minute is batshit, but it's pretty great afterwards. Think of it as 1 part Jason Bourne, 1 part The Professional, and 1 part James Bond wrapped up in an Evangelion and Lupin the Third wrapping paper. I reccomend dubbed over subbed, the voice actors did a really good job and it makes more sense generally speaking.

Urasawa is one of the people whose works I feel deserve to be considered almost a different genre so they can't be compared to normal anime, kinda like Miyazaki. Like no one who watches Princess Mononoke thinks to themselves "boy I sure am a fucking weeb". Monster and 20th Century Boys are almost required reading and Master Keaton and Billy Bat are both really good too. And even if you've never watched a second of Astro Boy (I sure as shit haven't) you should still read Pluto. I can't speak to the anime versions a couple of them have but I can tell you you're really, really missing out if you're only sticking to anime.

For the record, I also have Fukumoto in that group (and not just because his artstyle makes it impossible to compare to normal anime).

5 Centimeters was probably the most depressed I've ever been reading a manga.

I remember The Sky Crawlers was pretty good but it was years and years ago I watched it. There's a Wii game that explores the story more too iirc but I never played it so I dunno how good or important it is, I just remember the movie ended kind of abruptly. There was another movie I remember I enjoyed watching around the same time about a small group of special forces having to infiltrate I think it was Japan after they closed off their borders but I can't remember what it was.

I consider it like watching a telenovela or other melodramatic soap operas about assassins. It's a great watch

Please watch Laughing Salesman, guys.

If you like psychological horror then you may like it.

Its about this guys who "sells" people whatever they want for free. There is always a catch though, certain rules they must follow and if they dont... well. Lets just say Mr. Moguro isnt the kindest protagonist.

Quite dark actually, although it it episodic.
Laughing Salesman New is one of my all time favorite animes. It's terribly underrated and overlooked. It exemplifies why anime is special, it's so out there that only Japan's culture and animation industry could have produced it.
I cannot recommend it enough, it's a real hidden gem of a show.
The original and the manga are both worth checking out as well. Unfortunately, the live-action show is lost. As in, only the intro and episode 8 remains.
Episode 8 part 1
Episode 8 part 2
Episode 8 part 3

I thought so too, but there is heaviness to it that cuts through the melodrama. Specifically:
The episode where Ein and Zwei pretend to be a teenage couple to stalk a mob boss through a mall, ending with Zwei murdering the mob bosses wife and son. I'd say the first arc and the last episode were particularly bleak and dark. The rest of the series is retarded but in an entertaining way.

If you are going to recommend Eve no Jikan remember to direct them to the extended version that comes with a epilogue, Zipang is also a good choice but savvy people will inevitably compare it with the movie The Final Countdown only that the sides are reversed, Macross DYRL is also a good choice because you dont have to watch the entire series to understand but if your first experience was Robotech is going to weird you a little

Ghost in the shell is one of my favorites but when i recommend it to people i direct them to the 2.0 version with redubbed audio (JP Audio was made from scratch apparently by the original voice actors) and new 3DCG that is a hit or miss depend if you are a purist or not, the only thing that changed are the interfaces for example when they are tracking the truck driver is now full 3D also they changed the first thermo optic camo scene that in the original looked very goofy PS1 tier i don't know which version is on Netflix

Angel egg is hard to recommend (my avatar comes from there) because is just Oshii being edgy and pretentious, the aesthetic is superb but the plot is weird

And to my fellow lolcow hunters try to pay attention to the fandom in this season there are several big brained woke idiots shitting on Nekopara of all the things because apparently having cat girls is slavery and expect terrible horrible takes when the Hyena appears in Seton Gakuen because apparently female Hyenas have a fake penis and are indistinct from males, the one in the manga is actually female but because it has a fake penis it believes is a man and behave like one, there is a plot where she is made to dress like a female but hate it and continues to behave like a man so expect our usual mouthbreathers to use it as muh representation

I think it did, yeah. But I don’t think success is the benchmark of quality.

Nah, of course not, there's a lot of good anime that didn't get the audience it deserved. I need to get around to Laughing Salesman New, but I think it's kind of interesting that a soft reboot/sequel to a cultural icon that treated it with respect ended up doing very poorly. It regained some interest overseas to the point it looks like the subbers working on the original series have decided they're going to finish the entire show after all (before, they had said years ago they only planned on doing select episodes after like the first thirty episodes or so), but still is pretty disappointing we're not going to get more of Fukuzou Moguro any time soon.

To people that read quite a bit of manga, have you ever found this while reading?

Well while I was reading Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu, I noticed this

This made me laugh more than it should've lol

I didn’t have a great first impression of Fullmetal either as a matter of fact but I gave it a second chance and it wound up easily being one of the best animes I’ve seen.

So I’d recommend giving it a second chance.

True, but go with the 2003 anime. Avoid Brotherhood.

Even if Brotherhood was more faithful to the manga, the 2003 anime had a better story and is overall a lot better than the manga.

I always preferred the 2003 anime to Brotherhood/the manga.

You could say that part of it is due to nostalgia, since it was one of my favorite anime shows during the Adult Swim glory days of the early-to-mid 2000's, but I honestly preferred the story of the first anime and the direction it took.

It helps that while technically a shonen, the 2003 version of FMA is not like most stereotypical shonen anime and feels a lot more serious, while Brotherhood very much feels like a bog standard shonen anime of the late 2000's.

Their mother is apparently a lolcow hypochondriac who blows money on new age hippy bullshit. No comment on validity.

As someone that used to actually be apart of kirei cake, she has literally stated her mom's sickness is just being a hypochondriac. And she claims that her Canadian free healthcare doesn't cover her moms ailment bc a doctor "prescribed" a "super special" herbal tea that helps. She spends more time gaming than "taking care" of her mother

I watched the reboot when it aired and enjoyed it, but I also understand why it bombed as far as sales go. No intricate lore or worldbuilding, no waifus or prettyboys, no shounen action or fanservice. It's missing a lot that most of the anime watching crowd these days goes for. You're basically just watching for the novelty of people ruining their own lives.

Actually speaking of classic reboots, it's funny how unlike this show, Osomatsu san actually caught on enough to get two seasons and a movie and a ton of merchandise and shit. I dunno what exactly it was that made it catch on with young women but it sure worked well.
