This won’t be a revival of Death Note. These types of OneShots are pretty common and end in their own chapter.

Death Note already had a chapter before which was about another Shinigami trying to copy what Ryuk did. It didn’t lead to a revival. This’ll still be a good read but I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a new season.
We’ve already seen our revival with the Netflix Death Note movie. We are truly blessed

Shonen Jump is probably just pulling this out because of the amount of space they got right now. The Dr. Stone spin off ended, and they canceled 4 of the new stories they were pushing.

I used to think I hated anime but I started to realize I have very specific tastes.

I find that I tend to prefer darker stuff but without exaggerated art styles, so stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Berserk, and Akira appeal to me way more than the usual anime that gets popular. I guess I prefer the more "serious" art style because it's easier for me to get invested when characters aren't morphing or developing exaggerated features when they're emotional (that sharp teeth with elongated mouths especially annoys me). I remember trying to watch Fullmetal Alchemist and got turned off by the sheer goofiness of the animation, and I tried watching because of that dog-girl thing I kept hearing.

There are exceptions of course; I love Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo to the point it's one of my favorites, and what I saw of Trigun was pretty good (never did finish it). I dunno, I guess I want more of that specific type of anime but it doesn't seem to get much attention.

Is anyone else watching Deadman Wonderland? I'm only a few episodes in and I'm already enjoying the unapologetic and comical amount of cringe and edge (is the term credge even a thing?). So far it's everything a 14 year old edgelord would think is unironically cool and the opening couldn't be anymore fitting.

:jaceknife:

Does anyone know if the show maintains its credge?

It doesn't get any worse from what I remember, but it also doesn't get any better.

I unapologetically love that show. It's just so edgy and ridiculous I can't help but like it.
As it goes on, it just adds more and more characters with retardedly edgy backstories. And my land, the dub just takes the edge up to 11.
Highly recommend.

In other news, I've been reading more manga. Mostly stuff that already ended a while ago. Like Kasane, the one about the ugly girl. I like how she just gets more and more 'evil' as time goes on. I'd give it a shot if you like drama or theater.
I've also been reading My Son is Probably Gay, which I picked up because the title was funny. It's the same joke over and over, but it's endearing how the mom reacts to the son being so terribly bad at hiding his lust for hot men. Not great, not terrible, fine for killing time.
Franken Fran Frantic is keeping with the original vibe of Franken Fran, so I'm loving it. If you like body horror, Junji Ito type stuff, and more b-movie styled comedic horror, I can't recommend both series enough.

I started watching Boruto and unrionically I found myself enjoying it. Dunno much about Naruto, I read it in Shonen Jump up until they got to some misty village or something, so unfortunately whatever nuance this series has will be lost on me but for throw away shonen it's not bad. Doesn't annoy the ever loving Hell out of me so I guess that means it'ss doing its job?

Happy birthday to Haman Karn. (Jan. 10, 0067 UC)

I'll never not recommend 'Ghost in the Shell'. Psycho-pass too, Season 1 only.

Everyone should watch Monster. Its widely considered one of the best animes ever made (if not the best). It is a lot however, and it is about 70+ episodes, which is very rare for a modern anime to run that long. But its basically identical to the manga.

EDIT:
I also fucking LOVE its opening:

I should also note that for people who hate anime, Monster does not feel like you're watching anime at all. Its really a dark crime thriller that just happens to be animated.

Also just a hint to those who are going to watch it, don't skip the end credits.

I still can't believe I haven't watched that movie yet. I guess I just haven't gotten around to it because I wanted to watch other stuff like Akira.

It's funny, that's usually the kind of anime I like.

Guess I can't recommend Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro because it's got a goofy look to it, but it's about a demon who eats mysteries (you know who the killer is, but the fun is figuring out how the crime was committed) and is played by the sexy Takehito Koyasu. I like the design of Neuro, makes me think of Yami Yugi but if he was a legit demon who eats people's souls.

But for dark anime, while I can't think of any off the top of my head, judging by your Metalocalypse avatar, you should try out Detroit Metal City. Yeah, it has the animation style you're not a fan of, but it's a black comedy. It's supposed to look goofy as the nice milquetoast guy turns into the rape demon death metal vocalist whose manager creams herself over the depravity of it all.

Bobobo is unique, I honestly can't think of another anime like it, but Samurai Pizza Cats had a similar approach to the dubbing process. But that's an acquired taste tbh.

Still is a huge crime to all of humanity that Viz dropped the license.

Barring marathons, I just don't get why people skip end credits in anime, but yeah, never-ever-ever-ever skip Monster's credits.

See if it's trying to be funny then I don't mind it so much. It's when the style is there while also having serious moments that throw me off.

Take Fullmetal Alchemist for example, that dog-girl thing or whatever sounded insanely dark and depressing which is why I wanted to give it a shot, but then I start the show and Edward's making that sharp toothed face while spinning two people by the head around. It was so off-putting. It's like, how does this show go from this silly shit to that? I dunno, maybe I was being unfair but it didn't offer a good first impression.

I didn’t have a great first impression of Fullmetal either as a matter of fact but I gave it a second chance and it wound up easily being one of the best animes I’ve seen.

So I’d recommend giving it a second chance.

Also worth noting that people will say go with Brotherhood since it's the fuller story. The 2003 anime went its own separate way by the halfway point, but it's notably a darker storyline than the original manga at times. The 2003 version also has less comedic moments compared to Brotherhood, which I think is why it's rather darker in nature.

Please watch Laughing Salesman, guys.

If you like psychological horror then you may like it.

Its about this guys who "sells" people whatever they want for free. There is always a catch though, certain rules they must follow and if they dont... well. Lets just say Mr. Moguro isnt the kindest protagonist.

Quite dark actually, although it it episodic.

Didn't that get canceled like 1/3 of the way through the plot? or did it end up with a second season?

I tried Brotherhood first but I stopped because the first several minutes confused me and as I recall the opening song was dreadful. Then I tried the original and got to the part where Edward's spinning the guys by their heads and stopped.

Cards on the table, I've got unreasonably high standards when it comes to TV, especially if I'm about to commit to a longer show. And that's not just with anime either, but TV in general. It takes a lot for a show to get me to want to continue watching. And often I'll drop something if the opening minutes don't interest me.

This actually looks interesting. I swear I've seen that guy somewhere before though.

More recommendations for you all if interested. These two are old classics that you can thankfully find both subbed and dubbed playlists on YouTube to watch.
This show starts off in a dystopian world which harbors a creature that the government is adamant about keeping secured. However, their best efforts fail and they are left trying to scour quickly or else the being will escape outside of their city and into the irradiated world beyond.
A story revolving around two characters who were both brainwashed into becoming assassins for a crime syndicate. As the main character, Zwei, tries to figure out his past, he must kill repeatedly in his attempt to find an answer

Personally while 2003 is darker and I can respect it made it's own creative decisions, but at the same time there was a lot of weird decisions or filler that really felt offputting like that episode with the cat burglar and the "Fake Elrics" as well as making Envy into a boring edgelord and the 2003-only villains were really silly for my liking in terms of it's writing. But 2003 does excel in handling Lust well by making her have more depth.

Brotherhood's biggest issue is probably the first 13 episodes as it tries to rush through the stuff already covered in 2003 so it feels weak at first, it noticeably improves afterwards even if there are some comedic moments that feel off-putting.
