I remember you saying you'd remove stickers if users would let you. I like them, but I think they could be used for reputation tracking in a more interesting way than a single global reputation score.
A single reputation metric collapses different social perspectives into one number. My guess is that a significant amount of user churn occurs when someone's reputation becomes negative, even if they're valued within a particular subcommunity. Ideally, idiosyncratic users should be able to thrive within their own niche rather than be discouraged by negative ratings from people outside it.
Firstly, Instead of treating sticker totals as reputation, use stickers to construct a signed social graph.
For any user:
- Allies are users they consistently rate positively.
- Enemies are users they consistently rate negatively.
- Nemeses are users who are most positively rated by their enemies.
The "nemesis" relationship would be particularly interesting. People often want to know who sits at the center of the groups that oppose them or to find the steelman of the opposing viewpoint.
Secondly, separate
expression from
reputation. Right now a sticker serves two functions at once:
- Expressing an opinion about a post.
- Changing the author's reputation.
Those should be independent. Someone should be able to say "I agree" or "this is dumb" without necessarily effecting reputation. Solution: more stickers! Give each sticker a dropdown menu for positive/negative/neutral sentiment. (Maybe a closed trashcan for "dumb, but I still like you", open trashcan for neutral, and an open trashcan buzzing with flies for "dumb and I hate you", etc. These could be summed together for the tallies at the bottom of the post with the difference only visible when the "Members who reacted to message" window is opened.)
Finally and most importantly, replace the single global reputation with multiple reputations computed over the graph:
- Reputation among allies.
- Reputation among enemies.
- Reputation according to Null (obviously the most important).
- Optionally, a global reputation score.
Importantly, these reputations should be
transitive. If Null pos-rates User A, and User A pos-rates User B, then User B should inherit some positive Null reputation even if Null has never interacted with them directly. More generally: reputation should propagate through the graph with decreasing weight.
This proposal preserves more information than a single scalar reputation score and turns stickers into a genuine community-discovery and trust-network mechanism. Stickers are unusually valuable because they're simple, rewarding to use, and highly visible signals. Even if they're somewhat frivolous, they're probably one of the strongest community-building tools on the site. That's why people pay for special stickers. You could monetize stickers further by allowing users to pay to put more than one sticker on a post.
