CHELSEA, Manhattan — Multiple people were injured during an outdoor explosion in Chelsea Saturday night.

The explosion happened at 135 23rd St. between Sixth and Seventh avenues.

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured or the severity of their injuries. Preliminary reports indicate at least 14 minor injuries.

The FDNY is on the scene with the NYPD Counterterrorism Unit.

The explosion comes after a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey near the Semper Five 5K Charity Run Route. The device was placed in a garbage can.

29 injured, no fatalities.

A secondary, unexploded device was found and secured nearby. NYPD is analyzing this device which has been described as a pressure cooker attached with wires to a cell phone.

Update: It was Islam, of course.

Big cities have gangs. Gangs sometimes blow shit up. I'm going with that assumption until further details are available, but anything's possible.

Drivebys and street shootings maybe, street gangs aren't know for using explosives.

There was reportedly a construction project nearby too, so the possibilities could also include something involving the project (disgruntled employees, competition, etc.) My money is on islam though.

Gangsters blow shit up all the time. Even for hits. It's far more common in places like Naples, Corsica, and Sicily, but anyone who remembers John Gotti knows it's not unheard of in the States.

It's probably not gangsters, though. Even the nastiest Mara Savaltruchadors don't whack civs without reason.

It's actually much more common than people realize. I've seen reports ranging from gangbangers leveling one of their own stash houses to kill the DEA agents raiding it, to moonshiners rigging mines around their stills to ward off the ATFE, to Hell's Angels dropping a bomb from a plane on a rival clubhouse. It just doesn't get reported on as much because terrorism is a much more eye-catching headline than gang violence, which has just sort of become a fact of life.

I will concede, though, that it will most likely end up being terrorism. The location doesn't really seem to me like the best target, but Manhattan in general certainly is.

When I see a rigged up pressure cooker, and when terrorist groups are giving out instructions on how to rig up pressure cookers into bombs, I'm going to guess it's terrorism.

Also in New Jersey, a similar explosion went off today: a trash can was exploded with no one near, it was in the way of a Marine Charity Run, but the run was delayed because a backpack was found, otherwise they would have been near.

Does a possible bomb during a MARATHON ring any bells with you guys?

Officials say runners were expected to be pass by the area around the time the blast occurred but the start of the race had been delayed after an unattended backpack was found.
