So nanna's Bible has afflicted me with nostalgia and I was considering going to visit the local parish church some upcoming Sunday to see if anything else clicks, but then I checked the diocese website (last updated for Easter this year very 90s style) and it turns out the priest who officiated all through when I used to get dragged there has retired and now they're all Nigerians. I'm not very TND minded normally but it is a bit off putting. Is there a trick to get over this (spiritually)?

If they're a priest they are in communion with you, so you just love them as your brother. The way I think of it is you know a Nigerian priest probably wouldn't chimp out at you if you called him a nigger because he has a higher calling.

Churches nowadays are mainly minority filled if you're in a place that doesn't have a long-lasting population of Catholics. The bigger churches where I'm at have maybe 60 to 50% Hispanic parishioners, and most of the white crowd are above the age of 50. I'm lucky enough to be in a large enough city with a thriving population of younger, homegrown Catholics, but I do understand how you feel. My advice would be to scout out a few parishes near you, celebrate mass, get a feel for whichever one speaks to you, and try it out.

You know what, I'm starting to love this Pope more and more. I believe he will repair the public image of Catholicism at least a little bit.

I appreciate the subtle contrasts between them. Francis' devotion to piety through poverty and service made him authentic, yet approachable, yet left others with a feeling of unseriousness. While I believe Leo XVI truly feels the weight of his duty, and that shows through his mannerisms. But maybe that's my American bias showing. That if they really wanted to see emotion, they would've went with an Italian.

I'm honestly both incredibly happy and disappointed in myself, because it's something I've put off for a long time, yet it still was an incredible experience that I'm seriously considering further exploring. There's something profoundly humbling about a low mass that you don't often get in a Novus Ordo service: everyone is silent, while the priest and attendants perform their own service on the alter with careful attention to detail and prayer. I'm hoping that the traditionis custodes is lifted soon, because I believe every Catholic should attend at least one latin mass in their lives to see it for themselves.

I'd like traditionis custodes to be lifted, but as a latin nerd, I attended that "one latin mass" and gotta say I wish priests were better at linguistics. For me, the latin mass isn't going to hear the "magical language" and be in awe of it, it's going to hear mass in another language I understand decently enough, but with a different form.

Maybe it was just that priest who was particularly bad, but he sounded like a cross between a banjo and a fax machine. His intonation was odd and failed at carrying stressed vs. unstressed syllables correctly and he didn't understand how geminate consonants work, which meant whole sentences eventually "misaligned" and his speech just didn't scan correctly (kinda like how G-man in half life talks, but faster) and he was a southerner (and I am too, so I'm not knocking him for that) and you could hear every particularity of southern US english vowel mutation in his speech, which is very far from italianate ecclesiastical and classical, so it made a lot of words hard to understand, since vowel clarity is pretty necessary to parsing case endings in latin.

I felt bad for feeling so negative about the whole thing that it's made me not really want to go back, since I'd be worried I'd be more focused on how badly the latin is spoken than on the sacrifice of the mass.

EDIT: I'm not even trying to knock that priest. Priests have more important things to attend to than linguistics, like parish management and pastoral care, so while I had a negative experience, he's got more important stuff to do than appeal to language nerds.

Dude at a restaurant was talking to me about his failed marriage and I was giving my take from the religious POV. Dude said Jesus wasn't real and was invented by Constantine, so I just said Jesus was the most attested to guy in the ancient world and then he started threatening me. "Say Jesus again and I'm gonna beat the fuck out of you." So I just went full autism and started saying Jesus Christ is the way the truth and the life until he left. Has anyone here ever thought of attending or has have attended an Eastern/Non-Roman mass? I believe they're a good reminder that the Catholic Church is a universal institution that has many unique expressions of the faith, but all are united.

One time I went to an Anglican Ordinate Mass. You know, the kind for former Anglicans who jumped ship but still wanted to keep some of their old rites while being Catholic. Pretty ironic given how much I despise the Anglicans.

Dude had a seizure at Mass on Sunday. Usher called 911 for him because he was having breathing trouble. Seizure popped off right the paramedics arrived. Couldn't have had better timing.

Father stopped the Mass, grabbed the Last Rites oil, anointed him, then had everyone say a Hail Mary as they took him away.

I wanna hear a native romance speaker say the mass in latin. I'm sure I'd explode hearing a right proper rustic roman speak the language of all civilized people with all right sounds and pauses.

For context: the Catholic Church occasionally recognizes some "private revelations" that certain people have had from God or the saints that they deem "worthy of belief". However, belief and devotion to them are still optional for Catholics. Examples include Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, or St. Faustina's Divine Mercy apparitions.

Sadly, some grifters and kooks will decide that the Gates of Hell have prevailed against the Church, and that billions (i.e. anyone not in lockstep with themselves) are doomed to unending death, all because their favorite apparition was rejected by the Vatican.

I had to stop paying attention to such things, as a disconcerting number of people with those devotions put them over the Gospels. JPII said that "we are an Easter people, and Alleluia is our song".

If a spiritual message makes you blackpilled, it is probably not of God.

Latin doesn't sound half bad when a Southerner speaks it! Especially with impeccable pronunciation. (I love hearing "mihi" and "nihil" properly said, like the absolute nerd I am.)

I received a mailer from the monastery that I thought was rather well put together. I sincerely loved the time I spent with these monks during my private retreat. If you ever find yourself wanting a great place to spend a few days in worship and meditation this place is worth the trip.

There are many reasons for people to dislike Pope Francis(never took a hard enough stance against shitslam, fake humbleness), but it feels like whenever I voice any criticism of him, people start acting like I'm trying to start a schism or about to become a protestant.

I understand people feeling like we have to stand alongside the Pope, but that doesn't mean we have to accept his PERSONAL OPINIONS as Gospel, y'know? Really feels like half of Catholics don't care about what the Pope says, the other half cares far too much, and none of them understand what being Pope actually means.
